This was hilarious!  I have two cats and know first hand what giving meds to a cat involves.

I had two cats that got really sick as they aged over
about 17 years old. A sure fire method that has
never failed me first shot with either of them or
even a new cat I have barely met is to take the
pill and put it in either Chicken or Turkey baby food.
The stuff that comes in the little glass jars made
for very young toddlers. Cats will eat it even when
nothing else works.

If at first you don't succeed, just cram it down the little bastard's throat.  Voila!  Crude, but extremely effective.

That cracks me up, Kaylin. Because when wild cats roamed the tropics, they developed a fondness for bananas??

Hmmm considering how many cats are not enamored of deep water when did the wild cat learn to love tuna, and shrimp and why does the most expensive cat food come in the tiniest of cans? My cat would look at me like I was nuts if I fed her that.

poenkitten (who did have 1 tom cat that dragged in a sand shark after 15 minutes of battle in the water, but the shark was stupid, it was only up to the cats chest in water)

Never had cats, my mom doesn't like them...but it was HELL giving our dog (yes, dog) his meds once he got old...he was taking a lot because he was pretty sick for the last 6 months.  For a while we put them on bread covered in peanut butter, but he learned to lick the peanut butter off and spit them out...we hid them in Whoppers and Pizza Hut pizza for a while too, not sure what they tried after that, since I wasn't living at home.  I miss him = (

1. Wrap it in bacon.

2. Toss it in the air.

Maybe that was out mistake? We used Liver sausage but he spit it out even though it looked and sounded like he inhaled the disguised pill. I used the eat pistachios and would flip the unopened ones in the air. He would catch, crack it open, eat the nut and spit out the two shells at lightning speed. I miss him too.

Have you ever tried to  get a cat to pay attention to anything?  Or to do as told?

FR: haha great thread.  I don't care what techniques you use on my cat, he will hold the damn pill hidden in his mouth until he starts foaming and vomits and then spit it out.  Luckily, they can make most medications into liquid form now for a few extra bucks, although my vet has always told me don't do it on your own as it can change the chemical compound.  I have a internet service that does it for me and mails it to me.   Want to hear about the meds he HAD to have by injection and my failed attempts at doing so?  I've got scars and funny stories.......

I'm sorry that you had such trouble getting the meds in, lauren0221.

Why anyone would manufacture sweet flavored medicine for cats is beyond me. Bananas... or any sweet flavors... are lost on a cat. They lack the T1R2 protein which causes a mutation in the gene Tas1r2 that disables their ability to taste anything sweet. The have the taste buds for it... but the function is gone.

It's a good step in their evolution, however. Keeps them from eating an abundance of plants - likely including ones that may have poisoned them. And it causes them to favor a high-protein (meat) diet that would stimulate remaining taste receptors.

That aside I have an awesomely cute Siamese who will eat anything that takes his fancy, whether or not it's meant to be eaten by him. He ate an entire roll of Certs mints in one sitting. No one noticed him crunching away until too late. He also devoured the paper packaging around the roll of mints. He's quite fond of chewing holes in clothing as well. Eats the toes out of socks. Puts holes in shirts. He's a regular moth and we don't quite get why he does it. And he doesn't just rip the bits apart. He actually consumes the fabric. He'll chew, chew, chew until a small bit will come away and then it's gone! We've lost more socks to him than we have to our dryer.

I have to laugh about it. Have always been a dog person, until cats started to adopt me. Dogs and pills are easy! A litle Velveeta and the pill is down. Cats on the other hand......

I know! And I used to try and discipline Teeny with a spray bottle. He would give me such a, "Why would you do that to me?" look. I don't do it any more.

I've found that wrapping the cat in a heavy towel or rug and using heavy leather work gloves prevents alot of human blood loss.

Speaking of syringes and liquid medications reminds me of a recent episode of liquid wormer. I had a sticky syringe that didn't want to release nice and easy but instead went down in one swoop. A couple days later, the spacy anal retentive person I share the farm with finally noticed the dark brown blob on the kitchen ceiling and freaked out (thinking the roof was leaking). I just said, "No worries, it's just liquid wormer. And no, you shouldn't ask." The really stupid part of the story was that I tried the same syringe a week later for the second dose. Matching brown blob on bedroom ceiling. Thank god for good primer and paint....

When i had a vet examine one of my mama cats that i said was less than desirable w/her antics, he had a "cat bag". Just a bag w/a draw string where only the head shows and she couldn't do a daggone thing! Wonderful thing....
