GreedyTop -> If there was a fire... (2/1/2008 9:28:54 AM)

I work at a hotel.  We currently have a family staying with us whose house burned.  Not to the ground, but right now it is uninhabitable due to smoke and water damage.  Everyone in the family (including the cat) got out safely, and they were able to rescue family photos and such.

If you were to be faced with a fire (or flood or other catastrophe), what would you most want to rescue, if you were able to?

First things would be the Cats.. they take precedence over ANYTHING.  Then would be family photos. Next would be some original artwork I own (a water color of Edinburgh Castle, done by a family friend; a lithograph - #28 out of 50 - done by the artist Olivia, of Bettie Page, signed by both; and 3 originals by a very talented local artist (including one he did of me) named Elio Lopez).
There are bunches of other things I'd try to save, but those have the top billing..

if i'm at home--my dog.

if i'm at school--honestly there's nothing here that i would be devastated if it went up. i mean i wouldn't be happy but i don't think there's anything i can think of that couldn't be replaced.

Presently, possessions that matter most to me I can fit in a cardboard box (guitars aside.)

I'd grab my sax, my guitar, my Big Book of Computer Discs, my PC tower (and the LCD monitor if I could), my hat, my coat, and a small pile of personal papers.  Oh, and Stephen Colbert's "America" (as he demands you must do in the forward.)  All in all, it'd take two trips (I figure.)  Saving those few things would mean I'd be irritated, but not overly distraught.

Stephan

I was talking to a friend who said that so many people are materialistic.. they identify themselves by what they HAVE not who they ARE.
That combined with the situation above are what got me thinking.. what is irreplacable?what isnt?  The cats are NOT. everything else is.

Fluffy... are you a student or teacher? If ya dont mind my asking... LOL

My dog, my laptop (lots of financial data and digital photos on it).   A folder with a bunch of stuff my UM has given me over the years and two firearms that were my dads and are very special to me.   Everything else can be replaced fairly easily.

If i were to respond with my off the top of my head smart ass answer, i would say my toy bag, there is a fortune in cyber skin, latex and silicone after all!  [;)]

Answering seriously, as much as i would love to save personal mementos and possesions, my kids and critters come absolutely first.  Anything else is secondary, yes, even my sex toys, whips and restraints. ~sigh~
