Thorns82 -> Allergic to Collar? (2/1/2008 2:20:53 PM)

I recently was given a collar by my Dom.  He allowed me to pick it out, and it took quite a while to find one that the two of us liked.  It's got a metal square in the front, with a ring attached that hangs down...but I seem to be alergic to the ring!  I know there are obvious things I could do to help, like find a new collar, or remove the ring (not totally sure that's possible)...but it's special to me, and I want to keep it.  Can anyone think of anything else I could try?

There's just a small patch of skin that's being affected.  Before buying it I was not aware of any metal allergies, but I've never had jewelry that wasn't silver or gold.  I've never had a reeaction to anything else being on my skin either.  It is sensitive though, and puffs up/turns red if scratched.  I'm told it's a type of hives?

Here is a link to it: http://www.stockroom.com/Leather-Choker-With-O-Ring-P1109.aspx

Maybe you can put a special coating on the ring? So it wont bother your skin?

try applying a slick of clear nail varnish on the metal that touches your skin - that may reduce any allergy.

You could try putting  a few coats of clear nail polish on the side that is against your skin. I know it helped when I used to wear rings that tarnished easily and turned my  fingers green.

There is actually a product you can paint on that that will take care of your reaction to it.  The stuff is clear, and will not effect the look of it at all.  There are probably other brands, this is the one i happen to know of.  Hope it helps!

I have seen some have skin reactions to nickle plated metals. We ran into the same thing with a collar. As suggested you could use the nail polish though it will require maintenance. Keep in mind that the rivits exposed on the inside are most likely the same metal as well. I would contact the manufacturer and check with them, perhaps they could do you a custom with another type of metal.

I am hideously allegic to nickel .. I have to put band-aids on the back of watches to stop the metal 'burning' me so I don't look like I've been branded by a Dom who thinks wrist brands in the shape of watches are hot ...

i too am painfully allergic to nickle!! when i was younger and allowed to wear pajamies, i would break out from the snaps!! i will break out from a front closing bra is i am not careful (sigh) no trashy, cheap earring either or my ear will fall off.  oh well, such is life

BratAli19 -> RE: Allergic to Collar? (2/1/2008 3:14:24 PM)

try covering just the ring in clear nail polish, thats what i have to do on my earrings and stuff that im allergic to

Thorns82 -> RE: Allergic to Collar? (2/1/2008 4:51:56 PM)

There are pieces of metal on the inside, but I only seem to have a problem with the ring that hangs down.  Because of the way it's shaped (the front part is a bit bowed) it might not touch my skin.  Thanks for the suggestions!  I was afraid something like that might damage it somehow.  I'll try it out!

Cover it with clear nail polish.

I wore a nickel collar plated in some sort of silver finish for quite some time.  All of a sudden, my skin started to look like it was burning.  Turns out I have to wear stainless steel or I break out.  You may be the same way.

If the nail polish does not work for you, you can take thin leather cording available at Tandy Crafts http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/ and flat wrap the ring. If you decide to use the waxed thread, you could even lace your Masters inital in a concho or a symbol into the middle. Just a couple of ideas.

funny, I seem to be allergic to collars too-I just sell them to those who aren't.[;)]

LadyHugs -> RE: Allergic to Collar? (2/1/2008 11:07:05 PM)

Dear Thorns82, Ladies and Gentlemen;

In cases where there are allergic reactions to cheap metal(s) and a change needs to be made, sometimes people who repair jewelery have 'bits' like sterling silver or white gold; to fashion into the shape that you have.  Sometimes old men's wedding bands can be bought inexpensively at pawn shops and estate sales.  Some may have the means to 'silver plate' the ring and the connecting parts.  Then, I would take it to shoe repair, saddle repair and or luggage repair to have them swap the ring.

There are many people who have metal allergies and or sensitivities.

Just some thoughts.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,
Lady Hugs

           Nickel plating causes an allergic reaction for a lot of folk, some alternatives: varnish etc ia going to wear off, will need re-applying. Gold is good, but lower carat gold, some people get allergic reactions to the alloying metals. Plastic just does not have the same aura somehow. Best bet is stainless steel for anything worn on skin for any length of time. I wear several permanently fastened stainless steel bracelets and have never had any allergic reaction. I did react big time to a nickel plated chain. Some people react to chrome plating, thing is you never know until you try stuff.

polyacrylic is your friend; just dap a coat on for a permanent, waterproof solution that won't come peeling off later on down the line like nail polish will.

Hi daddysliloneds,
Thank you for the information. It would be very appreciated if you could send a link to where this is available.
