My 9 year old son has it. So I am very keenly farmiliar and aware of the needs of the asberger person. If you have questions feel free to ask. My son has been evaluated at school and has an individualized education plan and is reassesssed every 3 years. he gets assistance with his schooling which i assune will continue. he is very disorganized and extremely bright and easily distracted and doesnt pick up on regular social cues. Hes a funny and wonderful kid with a fantastic imagination.

I have Asperger's and so does my nephew. It is interesting to watch one another and see ourselves in the other's eyes.

These types of individual disorders are really part of the Aspergers characteristics. Although it runs on a spectrum. For instance my son loves being touched and cuddled and kissed but has trouble with processing and is very deliberate in how he does things.

i have not been tested, but in my own assessment i meet almost all of the diagnostic criteria for AS.

There was a lengthy and (IMO) quite informative thread about it a while back that is worth a read if you're interested-

Believe me THE most awesome and definitive book on Asperger's written by one who has it:
http://chipmunkapublishing.co.uk/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3&products_id=592   Reflections from Planet WeirdoBy PJ Hughes ISBN: 978-1-84747-146-8
Published: 2007
Pages: 189
Key Themes: autism, Asperger syndrome, self-help, mental health services
Autism is a condition that affects the way an individual relates to the world around them. Its diagnosis is based on, amongst other criteria, social interaction and communication. It also affects each individual differently, which is why it is often called the autistic spectrum. Many in the field refer to the autistic spectrum as either ASCs (Autism Spectrum Conditions) or ASDs (Autistic Spectrum Disorder). Within this spectrum is a condition called Asperger Syndrome, which lies at the intellectually high functioning (this relates to an IQ that is average or above average) end of the spectrum. - PJ Hughes

One of my son's is also in the process of being diagnised.I have come to think of normality as weird and weird as normality.....Prinsexx

My 5 year old nephew is autistic. He was diagnosed when he was 18 months old He is a beautiful, brilliant little boy, social, compassionate, happy, loving. But he is non-verbal, only saying sounds and something like Daddy and Mommy. It is a very sad thing; he goes through tons of therapy since age 2 and you can tell he understands everything and wants to talk, but he cannot.

But we all love him to death and we hope for the best; he is better on the computer than I am!!!

Red, please tell me they're teaching him sign language.  It truly will open up a whole new world and tap different parts of his brain.

Folks, please don't steer this discussion towards kids with aspergers or the thread will be removed.

Thank you,

I have in the past been told I have Aspergers, because of some difficulties and the textbook tick list. But the tick list, anyone aspergers or not can claim they fit with most if not all of the classic traits

Things I have become aware of, like so many other undiagnosed adults, I have changed, the eye contact thing and a few others and I do see aspergers not as a disorder, but an enhancement. Fair enough some of the social skills might initially be lacking, but once known, Aspergic people learn fast, but do sometimes appear to over compensate as what is normal, is not natural to them. Oh and aspergic people tend to be perfectionists, analytical and critical especially self critical, but they are all things that can be worked on.

Largely those with aspergers are of a higher IQ and have a different way of looking at things so can solve problems others have difficulty with. In fact, I believe Albert Einstein was aspergic, and I knew an Oxford Don, professor of mathematics at one of the universities who was also aspergic, people I came across when I was exploring the possibilities of myself being similarly gifted.

No, all these so called 'disorders', though maybe they be different from the norm, they can also be looked upon as enhancements and it is the duty of those engaged in teaching to find ways to rely information to these people, not write them off as having a disorder.

For a teacher to do such a thing, to me is an admission of failure, as a teacher is born not made and a natural teacher will always find a way to teach and indeed may see the teaching of enhanced people as a challenge worthy of their skills, I know,I would!

There is another authority on Asperger's worth mention, but I forget all the person's name except that he is from the comedian, ' Ali G's family, the family name being Baron-Cohen. Mind, Sacha Baron-Cohen is an intellect to wonder at.

I am very familiar with Asperger's syndrome.  It's hard to diagnose off of the computer, because it presents in so many different ways.  I'd recommend looking at the OASIS site and reading anything Temple Grandin (?not sure of last name) has written.

Since Asperger's syndrome only entered the DSM in 1994, it doesn't take much for the layperson to get as good a feel for it as the professional, particularly if someone in the home is an Aspie.

Early intervention is vital!

There are many options in which to communicate if one doesn't verbally communicate. Yea, ASL is an option, but if you have someone that doesn't speak and doesn't have the ability to use ASL and/or learn it, there's other means. I've seen PECS (picture exchange communication system) used and was very impressed by it.

I, too, have asperger's. Asperger's is one of those diseases that is commonly misdiagnosed as ADD or ADHD. Then again, a child who was deaf in one ear was diagnosed with ADD; pharmaceutical companies will do anything to get another kid doped up.

Although for god's sake, can't we change the name to something that doesn't sound exactly like "assburger" ???

Asperger Syndrome is not a disease: it's a neurological disorder. I co-founded and serve on the Board of an autism organization in my area. My now-ex fiance/dom has Aspergers, and accordingly to the online tests, I am borderline Aspie myself.

I was once told everyone is to some extent a borderline Aspie as is everyone a borderline schizophrenic, manic depressive  etc etc

All these disorders as society calls them, might just be people with  a different view to the norm, people with different abilities.

It serves those in mental health care to categorise a person, give them a label, make them different from everyone else. Something which could cynicaly viewed as justifying their own position and there, their pay cheque, not to mention the drug companies.

Just an idea, what if the educational means was found to put these      ' enhanced ' abilities to good use, we might even find that society starts moving in a better direction instead of going around in circles, chasing it's tail
