A top is something I wear to cover my breast and stomach. A bottom is what I wear to cover my ass and my legs. Or on hot days, just to cover my ass.

I was going to say the something similar.  And it still applies, unless you happen to be inverted.

eyesopened -> RE: Is that your final anwer? (2/2/2008 4:02:40 AM)

The simple definition (and i'm NOT trying to be a smartass) is the Top is what is above and the bottom is what is below.

Some have likened it to Pitcher and catcher.

The relationship, the scene, the play, the session, the place, time, activity, and people invovled will change the nuance of the terms so that a single definition changes to be what is needed at the time for the people involved.

Lashra -> RE: Is that your final anwer? (2/2/2008 5:59:14 AM)

These work for Me they may however not work for you. I don't think it matters if you are in a relationship or one play session at a time.

1. Top-the giver of sensation in a scene
2. bottom-the reciever of sensation in a scene.

Justme696 -> RE: Is that your final anwer? (2/2/2008 6:07:10 AM)

The Top is the boss and the other is there to follow ;)

TysGalilah -> RE: Is that your final anwer? (2/2/2008 6:10:48 AM)

this is only MY understanding
not THE answer or definition ...
     shudders!

a Top = controls a play scene ...casual vs being withIN a relationship with the person they are topping.

a bottom =  gives temp-control ( physically/of the body) to the Top in above mentioned scene/play   also casual vs being withIN a relationship. Actions/play does not require submission emotionally or mentally.

Every word has a standard meaning. You may tweak it here and there to fit what you want it to be, but there also is the root of a word.

The definitions below were far from finished.  But if the dictionary cannot come up with a short definition for you, I doubt a group of people will either.
Define yourself, your relationship, your mate, your relationship to your mate and those around you, but be satisfied that any definition you assume is correct for someone else, is colored by your prejudice of who you think they are.
If you are engaging in relationships with people who claim to be top, or bottom, ask them what THEY mean by that.

Welp as you can see, there is no agreement on this or any other term.  I wonder what would happen if we asked everyone here what an egg is? [;)]

Some people use the term top or bottom in a derogatory fashion.  Many are merely referring to who has the authority, some are referring to a temporary situation, other's any situation.  Sensation receiving isn't the relevant factor in my book as a top can tell a bottom to give them sensation or activites, even those considered bottomish and still be a top.  Clear as mud?  As LA stated, you aren't going to get a consensus merely because you desire it, people don't work that way nor does language and especially here. As with all language context can be the defining factor, other times, it's not so helpful.

Top and bottom. What is the correct definition. i hear so many different  versions from people that i don't know which is right. i have heard that it means a one time play session.

2) When you are not in a serious relationship.
3) when you just play at it

Does anyone have the correct definition? i would appreciate it. Thanks.

Clarification please on the bolded parts
who is defining the seriousness of the top/bottom relationship?
what does "JUST play at it" mean
Lucy

There really isn't one. There isn't a one true way of BDSM which includes easy definations.

catize -> RE: Is that your final anwer? (2/2/2008 9:57:21 AM)

From Wikipedia:
Top, a toy that can be spun on an axis, balancing on a point.

From me:
Bottom, the part of my body that rests on a chair while pondering definitions.  [:)]

Hello taken

I think the best course of action is to talk to an individual and ask their definition and try and understand it, than try and find a 'correct' definition.

For me, I am in a ltr and I top occasionally, but I do not pretend or play the action, it is something that I am and have learned as a part of me.  However it can work in play situations.

For me Topping and bottoming are actions - physical representations manifest.

Thanks, actually from several people's posts on this thread i understand the meaning completely. They all had one common definition and that's what i wanted to fully understand the word's meaning. :)

atursvcMaam -> RE: Is that your final anwer? (2/2/2008 3:31:53 PM)

a top has openings for one's head, arms and waist, a bottom has openings for the waist and legs.

Obviously you did not quite grasp what so many were trying to communicate on this thread.  Just because a few people's definitions are similar does not mean that you have a "full understanding" of the words.

You may be able to appreciate their understanding of the words, but you may not appreciate my understanding of the words.

I believe that a top is the one in controll or trying to control a scene. And the bottom is the one being controlled.
