interesting premise by the instructor.

fluffyswitch -> RE: Class Assignment: Build Torture Device (2/2/2008 3:54:14 PM)

it's an interesting concept. unfortunately soc stuff like that tends to go way way out of hand and we end up instituting IRBs after people pretend to torture people or run fake prisions...

Hey Rockbound,
A little off topic here but, I was wondering what that Avatar represents.  I saw it somewhere else with a sword through it and am trying to figure out what it means.  Can you enlighten me?

KinkyKelle -> RE: Class Assignment: Build Torture Device (2/6/2008 7:39:08 PM)

Do you mean the BDSM symbol?

Interesting classwork.  How can I register to take that class next semester?

I kinda got that part, but was wondering what the sword would signify in the one I saw.  Plus the one I saw was in front (or on top)  of an Egyptian type starburst.

Wow... making architects / engineers think about ethics.  This is a radical concept; I thought their jobs were just to build whatever they were paid to, no questions asked.  After all, lasers, bombs, nuclear weaponry, biological warfare...those all came from benevolent technological research right?  Never think Why...just keep on thinking How.  That's how we reached where we are today.

ironically that's part of the reason that sociologists avoid experiments. people attempted to do benevolent research to see what happens under certain situations and things went to hell in a handbasket. so now we just watch other people like we're in a zoo or something.

The two-week project is in advance of a major project to design a new headquarters for human-rights group Amnesty International.

I found this last line from the article particularly interesting, felt it framed some of the intention of the project.
