Violet Ray, I  have come across a couple of old violet ray machines, one I believe is an Osbourne Garret and the other a Commercial, both at a rediculously low price. Now as I am interested in old apparatus , pre 1950,s, I was wondering at these machines.

Are they similar to Violet Wand, and does anybody know anything about these two makes?

Yes, an old Violet Ray machine operates in the same manner as a Violet Wand. They generally all accept the same attachments.

A few things to consider-

Most Violet Rays built back in the day had a wax "core" in the transformer. As a result, there is a limit to how long they can be run in one session. Unfortunately, you won't really know what that limit is until you reach it and kill the thing.

Some have all of the electronics built into the "wand" the way modern devices do.  Some have the transformer built into a box, with the wand separate. This gives a lighter wand, but usually a more limited range.
they operate in the same manner.

Attachments get expensive quickly. The price of a set can vary widely depending on how many items are included. However, there is only so much difference you can see with some of them.

As for the particular manufacturers... no idea. If you see the things in person, take a look at the quality of the external instruction... that's usually your best indicator as to how well they're made.

Yes to what dave said , though i shall also add most back also had no ground , a 2 prong outlet cloth cord ,poor insulation ,and very few attachments .for a cool collectible sure  they are great , if it was me i would toss the dough out for a newer model ceramic core with many attachments  and body contact pad  with foot control .very limited use at best with an old violet ray unit .
I picked one up just for a show n tell piece ,it had 3 attachments  and worked though very limited and low intensity but it had the original case and all the instructions  and a how to use booklet  all for 25 buxs  .Its a great conversation item  and medical quack antique .

Thankyou both for your thoughts, it is of help. Both machines are grounded, that I know and though one machine has three implements, the other has many. I just love the big bakelite control knobs and leatherette detailing. The cord, is old, with a flaxen covering, but I do know sinilar modern stuff is available as a replacement and I am reasonably proficient with older electronics, having received training in the past with post ww2 electronics.

I just love the concept of the  Tesla coil, in fact one of my all time heroes is Nichola Tesla, a visionary well before his time.

And of course, the Violet Ray besides being a conversation piece might have another use, limited though it may be.

Ahh, i'd say the multi-implement kit would be superb score if you can get it cheaply.

Since the kit is grounded (a real rarity in the U.S. for older kits; i don't know if the UK had different electrical wiring standards back then), it should be pretty good for play. If the flax insulation is in good shape, i'd just leave it... makes it all the cooler, IMO, since a lot of people nowadays don't even realize that used to be the norm.

Some quack medical devices are really, really neat if you like old machines... i saw some kind of electrical "treatment" device on ebay UK a while back that had a marble face, beautiful brass inset controls, just a fantastic piece of workmanship... went for close to 300 pounds, IIRC.

The Violet Ray kit that i bought was made (well, sold, at least) by Sears Roebuck, neat little engraved brass plaque, fabric wire wrap, but not grounded... gives a pretty good zap, although i've never tried a modern unit for comparison. Was strong enough to give me an electrical burn, at least... (using the metal probe to arc to some Christmas garland through a glass cup!)

I'd advise getting the kit with all the lovely attachments, then go to www.violetwands.net and buy just the base model. If you end up liking the antique, you can use it from time to time, but the modern manufactured wand from violet wands.net will have a much longer endurance for longer scenes and such, and will probably take all of the attachments in your antique kit.
