Collars are just another accessory or piece of hardware. I wore them long before I really understood D/s. Like rings however if given under a special circumstance, they can have significant meaning.

Charlotte,

It is interesting that you have always felt as though you needed a "special necklace", which would, in a sense, become a part of your identity. Growing up, I had a "special ring" which I never removed. It's curious how things like this carry over into adulthood.

I told my Master that I wanted a collar. To symbolize my commitment.

Actually I refused it when first offered because I didn't see how it could work LDR. We spent a couple of weeks going over details and when I thought I could handle it, he offered it again. I don't like to fail at things so I won't go into something if I don't believe I have a reasonable chance of success.

the symbolic collar ... has the same importance for me as a wedding ring does ... so yes in a way i have always wanted one

the practical play collars ... i enjoy them in play and relish the collecting of varied designs that i can enjoy and attach happy memories to

I have not always wanted a committed M/s relationship,
therefore I have not always wanted a collar.

I had a lot of trust isssues, and fears of committment.
MasterK by being consistent, showing me I could trust
again, inspired me to truly submit. Now I would love to
have his collar. It will happen when he feels we are ready.

Like a wedding / engagement  ring - the glitter and sparkle wears off.  I wouldn't want one unless I was absolutely sure - and I'm not even certain I'd want one then.....  With age comes wisdom - and a huge amount of caution and cynicism

Had you always wanted a collar, or is it something your Dom(me) / Master worked you up to?

I wanted a collar for a while, and I still do, but I've realized that a "vanilla" commitment of an engagement and wedding simply means more to me. He owns me, if he never puts a collar around my neck I can live with that. The man, for reasons I don't understand, has decided he wants to join my crazy family! [;)]
