YourhandMyAss -> RE: How would you train an older dog where it's ok to pee if he can't get outside to go? (2/2/2008 8:00:34 PM)

We don't allow him to tank up on water, so he usualy don't need to go He does it about once or twice a week . All though when I wake him up lately he starts peeing instantly lol. I have news paper handy to stick under him while he gets it under control lol. When I'm not home he goes outside if it's nice. if it's not he sleeps on his favorite doggie pad on the screened in porch. Maybe if we put him outside earlier in the evening for longer periods he usualy goes out for the final two pee pee's at 11, 12 or 1 am, pee's an runs back in maybe I can leave him outside for about 5 or 10 mins so he's had a chance to do more than the first pee if he needs to Mmnotter he's 17 or 18, and of course I wouldn't hurt him over peeing accidents , He's precious to me. quote:
ORIGINAL: windchymes They have to go when they have to go. Older dogs develop special needs, just like older humans do. Can you set an alarm for 2 or 3 in the morning and let him out then? He's probably just too old to make it all the way through the night now. It's inconvenient, but if it's what he needs, then you have to. For times when you aren't home, can you keep him in a room with a tile or linoleum floor, i.e. not carpeted, and put down those pee pads? If he does have an accident, it will be easy to clean up then.
