Next week I'm traveling to the UK -- there's a group of about 6 of us, including a married couple with a 1-yr old. We have 1 week in Birmingham on business, and then about a week to explore. I've seen that we have a few CollarMe folk from the UK, and I thought I'd share my itinerary with them to see if they have any feedback or suggestions on our plan... After our stay in Birmingham is complete, we plan to take a train to Gatwick, and from there fly to Shannon, Ireland, and spend a couple of days there. The plan is to stay in Killarney, and visit the Dingle peninsula, and the Ring of Kerry, and just enjoy the pub scene. (btw, we know about the RyanAir & EasyJet flights out of B'ham, but for some reason they don't work at a convenient time for us and we've also heard that they're sometimes cancelled if not enough passengers show up -- we were thinking flying out of Gatwick would be more reliable). Question: Is Killarney a good place to stay? It seems centrally located to those sights, and not too far from Shannon. Any suggestions for places to stay in that area? After Ireland, we return to Gatwick for a few days in London. I'm assuming it's fairly easy to get from Gatwick into the city via train or other public transport. On the itinerary are just a few tourist highlights -- we're trying to not to cram too much "sightseeing" into the trip. We have about two and a half days -- St. Paul's, Westminster Abbey, Tower of London, British Museum, Soho/Covent Garden, and the area around Marble Arch are on the plan. Question: Any suggestions for where to stay in London? Someone initially recommended the Thistle near Marble Arch, but it's a bit pricey -- at current rates around $215/night. Since we'll be out & about most of the time, it seems kinda silly to spend that kind of money on accomodations. We'll also need to make our way BACK to Birmingham (long story) for the flight home, so it would be nice to stay somewhere close to a train station. (Btw, my job is to make all the train arrangements -- I know about www.nationalrail.co.uk. Is there anything else I should know?)
