BlackSakura -> Crop shopping (2/5/2008 5:14:19 AM)

Hello all,
I am looking to get a crop.  People keep telling me that the best place to go is a tack/saddle shop.  I am a lil wearing of doing this because I've heard that if they guess for any reason you're going to be using it ON someone they'll kick you out. (somthing alomg those lines)  How should I go about doing this.  I really don't wana get 'taken' by going through a fetish shop...

Unless you bring a subbie along with you and whack them in the saddle shop, they arent going to kick you out. The shop doesnt care what you plan on doing outside the store as long as you dont make a big deal in the store about using them "improperly". Dont ask ridiculous question that make you stnad out or maske you sound suspicious. If you do have questions about the proper length or whatnot, they will assume you are a first time rider, not a Domme.
I got my crop at a saddle shop in Vegas. No muss no fuss and the shopkeep was very helpful when it came to finding the right length to work for me, since they do vary depedning on a persons height when they ride. As long as you dont give them a reason to toss you out, you are just another customer and your money spends as good as anyone elses.

I wouldn't suggest bringing someone to try the crop out on in a tack shop, or having loud conversations about who you're going to beat.   The reason they stock crops is that they want to sell them.   They're not going to throw you out as long as you're behaving in the normal, courteous way you behave when you go to any other retail establishment.   If asked about my horse...well, you see my sister has one and this is a gift.   Or it's a bachelorette party gag gift.   Something like that.

I like crops.   I've bought them at tack shops, and online through both fetish shops and through online tack shops.  While fetish shops are usually higher, but the price difference isn't always as much as you'd think for similar items.  My favorite crop is one I paid about $25 from an online fetish shop - a Flip Whip, which have a very wide slapper and an extremely flexible shaft.   If I'd fond it at a tack shop, I maybe would have paid $5 or $10 less.  Buying online is nice if you want a matched set - tack shops don't always have multiples of the same unless they have a high turnover for such items.

Crops are like most things - you can pay just about any amount for them.   The really cheap ones usually aren't too great for human use - they tend to have very narrow slappers (the leather/rubber/plastic bit at the end).  I prefer a wide slapper, and those cost a little more, closer to the $20 mark.   One tack website has an imported handmade English crop that they personalize with your initials that is well over $100 - it's absolutely gorgeous and on my "would love to get someday" list.

some petsmarts have tack shops in them too. For the most part when I am in a petsmart I am completly left alone.

+1 on go in, act like normal shopper, buy crops and leave. Generally better quality and prices at a tack shop than a bdsm store. Of course you can always skip the trip and simply order from one of the online tack shops like Stateline Tack, Petsmart, etc.

I toss my stuff in random fashion in my closet so as not to draw attention to it.  One time I was playing 'do I havta come and get chu?' (a very ritualistic game of hide and seek) and my daughter stops and walks out of the closet with a crop in her hand and says, Dad?  Why do you have this?

I said, 'In case I ever get any horses.'

on with the game, no lies told, and no truths either.

Just spend a little extra time oooooooing and Ahahhhahhhhhing over the various sadle and tack items then buy the crop, they will assume you are a rider and you'll have not one second glance.
All else fails tell them you have a freind that has a birthday and someone else is getting them riding lessons, you're getting the crop as a present that goes with the theme.

Jeffff -> RE: Crop shopping (2/5/2008 6:55:23 AM)

just go to a tack shop and say. " Hi  a freind of mine rides and and they need a new crop".

As a BDSM/adult toy store owner, I find  myself selling crops(not cheap), but all my own personal crops I have bought from a tack shop, because of the price. Unless you are into buying vast quantities of them at one time, the wholesale price is still more expensive than going to a tack shop, unless you want a specialised one.
just my experience :)

Come and buy it in NYC. No one cares about anything here! [;)]

ProlificNeeds -> RE: Crop shopping (2/5/2008 12:56:56 PM)

They'd have no idea what the crop is for unless you indicate it. When buying dressage, and lung whips I always snapped them about to feel them and test them. No one raised a brow, just don't break anything!

shysub0951 -> RE: Crop shopping (2/8/2008 2:11:13 PM)

i've bought two crops from petsmart with my male Dom friend with me. Not a second glance.

sweetwenchie -> RE: Crop shopping (2/8/2008 2:34:08 PM)

i usually go to tack shops for crops and other fun goodies.  One man asked what kind of horse i had, when i replied none he simply gave me a look and rang up my purchases.  Money is money in this market society.

VMistressV -> RE: Crop shopping (2/8/2008 10:52:24 PM)

I highly recommend tack shops. But go a bit further down the price range. Go to an all purpose country supply store. They sell everything from live chicks to clothes to livestock supplies. If you live in middle america this should be pretty easy. I know Rural King in Indiana sells crops that will last years of "hard use" for 4 dollars that cost 20 in sex shops. And more variety too.

ItalianSMistress -> RE: Crop shopping (2/8/2008 11:13:04 PM)

Yeah, I get Mine at the tack shop too.  Not only much cheaper, but WAY stronger then those ones you get at a stag shop.  The newest one I bought, I went with a vanilla friend, and she was laughing and we were joking around with the owner.  When I was paying for it, I said "See, in and out, that was not hard, I picked it out in less than 5 minutes."  And the store owner said "yes, it was rather painless."  Well, My friend just started laughing her ass off, and I winked at the owner and said "well, for everyone here it was, it wont be for long."  She just laughed, and her husband did too, all in all, a fun experience, lol.

azropedntied -> RE: Crop shopping (2/9/2008 8:08:24 AM)

Not all  crops are equal I see alot of people  saying yeah U can get a cheap crop last for years , 4$ 5$ 10$ 2$ etc etc .Know that some dressage  equine shops have more expensive crops that even the XXX shop carry i have seen  some reach the 80-120 dollar mark .I did not think they were worth that  either .Lucy is correct , as i also sell them Mine sell  for 20-25 $ range though i have seen the same crop i sell in  adult stores  for 50 $ .
When your buying a tack store crop  give a slight twist and tug to the  head of the crop .I have seen some Very poorly made 2-10$ crops and the head  pops off .I have also seen 10-15$ 20-35$ crops do the same thing so its not always a sheer price issue .
I would rather buy One crop at 30 buxs  that 5 that keep failing no matter what the price .
Tack shops also have MANY other items  like quirts , whips ,lunges ,hobbles , take a slow eyes wide open look around  and have fun .
Dont worry about what if anything they are going to say , I bought a bunch of quirts  from a guy  he said those are for horses  right , afer i paid , i said that was their orig intended use .LOL well it was !

Only problem you may have in a lot of tack shops is going in with multicolored hair and facial tats; riding is conservative because it's hard work. But I've found that if you want first class crops, that's where you go.
Somebody posted about crummy crops with skinny poppers? Cheap crops, and that's what you'll find in fetish stores. Those are fiberglass, and have abrasive covers and you can king hell cane somebody with them. But if you want a fine tool you can get a regular crop- skinny popper- that hit's beautifly. Had one, lost it... And lengths are available at tack shops.
A wide popper is called jumping bat and just better for some horses. And people; A good tack shop will have those too. Along with rubber gag bits, lots of leather straps, roweled spurs, very interesting grooming goods, plenty to investigate.
And about trying it on someone. Why? You have a leg for that, and they don't get to pick anyway. A good crop is like any other whip, an extension of the arm that hits accurately. Horsepeople are looking for exactly the same properties.
There was this not funny but tinged with naughtiness joke about girls who rode horses when I was in high school. It's true; Leather, sweat, whips, and a 90 pound girl dominating 1500 pounds of animal. Tack shops ARE fetish suppliers.

unforegvn -> RE: Crop shopping (2/12/2008 8:32:24 PM)

I have purchased most of mine from a tack shop without incident.
