LadyEllen -> trouble in Chad - France to intervene (2/5/2008 11:53:42 AM)

Channel 4 news (UK) just reported this - first I'd heard of it.

Rebels believed to be backed by Sudan have pulled back from the capital of Chad which they entered earlier this week - ostensibly to allow civilians to leave before they make a final assault. Refugees from the Darfur conflict flooded into Chad, now they and the people of Chad are fleeing into Cameroon. Its thought that the assault on the capital has been ordered by Sudan to prevent the deployment of European peace keeping forces within Chad but aimed at Darfur, just over the border in Sudan.

There are 1400 French soldiers in the capital, equipped with armoured cars and the like. The French president today broke with convention to advise the aggressors that unlike in previous similar situations, (we all recall I'm sure the frustrations of Bosnia), the French troops would intervene to help Chad to repel the attack.

We'll see what happens. What's interesting is this sudden change of policy by this new French president, especially since his visit to his new best friend, one George Bush. It might just also go some way to explaining why France hasnt been too well represented in other theatres perhaps - they were anticipating this one.

Lady E Chad was a French colony, one of its 2 main languages is French and its coinaged is the chad franc or something. France is also reliant on the Chad cotton industry and has invested heavely in it. Maybe this explains things.

Sarkozy has been criticized in France and his Chad policy has been described as the 'same old failed policies'. The French are beginning to wonder where all this change he spouted in the election is.

Americans, beware of politicians spouting change without detailed policies.

It's Africa. And France has historically been the first to jump into problems in African countries. While the US deals with the mid-east and south asia.

Yeah, except that in the past France has operated 'under cover' (often with the help of mercenaries) in Africa. It's rare that France dips a toe in the water: Sarkozy must be trying to regain a semblant of popularity with the French population.

A good war. That's all they needed.

Unless I am mistaken Chad is an Oil producer.... France is no different than The US and the UK for that matter when it comes to protecting it's sources of oil.

Well, his new wife has been banged by Mick Jagger.

'Sounds like change to me.

Chirac was too busy defrauding French citizens at Paris Town Hall to worry about banging anyone.

Every cloud.....

The Sudan is sitting on top of what may be the largest untapped oil reserves on the planet... and no one is foolish enough to attack the Chinese battalions...errrmmm... 'petroleum engineers' stationed there.

RealityLicks -> RE: trouble in Chad - France to intervene (2/5/2008 1:42:34 PM)

Chad and Sudan have both been arming rebels in each other's territories for years and the Janjaweed are backing this rebel move on the capital. They've moved now because the EU were about to send in peacekeepers to secure the coming election - like they did a couple years ago. Or was that just the French? Anyway, Chad's oil deposits are substantial, apparently to valuable to allow the Sudanese to place their allies in power.

DomKen -> RE: trouble in Chad - France to intervene (2/5/2008 1:46:42 PM)

I'm proud of the french no matter the reasons. Chad is on the verge of being conquered by one of the worst regimes in the world and most of the western world is sitting on its hands bemoaning the situation when this is precisely like the wars during the yugoslavia, A small modern force willing and able to fight will end this in a hurry. If not stopped now we will one day be faced with fighting Sudan in Egypt or Israel.

Sarkozy made it clear during his campaign that he is determined to make France a bigger power on the world stage. They are building another aircraft carrier and they are trying to make a multi-billion dollar deal with the US to purchase modern planes to beef up their air force.

I will be happy wait until all the motherfuckers are gathered together, dig a hole with our shit into them with one fell swoop.  (interesting locution --- can you have two or a couplea or several fell swoops?  what would make it fell then?)
