If my children were starving, I'd cut off my arm first and fry it up for them before feeding them the pets!

Quivver -> RE: Leaving your pet behind (9/9/2005 6:16:35 AM)

An Arm? what good would you be to them months down the road Manndalin? How long would that Arm feed them? It's our culture driecting our mind set over the consumption of what *we* call pets. We think it's natural to eat Cows, Pigs, Chickens, but not Dogs, Cats or Horses where some cultures do. They say Horse meat is a delicacy (sp?) although personally I Pray I never have to find out. Survival of the fittest......

But back to the OP.........
There is going to be many MANY animals that will be saved. Many of them will not be marked with an owner, no home to return to, just as it was in North Carolina. Animal lovers can DO something by opening up their homes and barns to those that have no where to go. Set up a data base with photos for owners searching for their lost friends. It takes $$$$'s and time but well worth the effort when you can reunite.

Actually, it's quite delicious. The meat is tender and sweeter than beef.

40 years ago, you would never have even seen that little boy thowing up on television. A very personal situation, if you ask Me. My question is, why was that given air time in the first place? What was the point? To make us feel worse than we already do?

when i read those words, i immediately thought of the following words of a Chris Rea song - "You Must Be Evil". ( i have not watched the news, nor read a newspaper for over a decade.....if it's important, someone will let me know. call me an ostrich, i don't care *smiles*)

I come home from work
I see my little girl
She’s crying on the floor
She’s been watching that tv
This ain’t late no, this ain’t even dinner time
To show them things on that screen
What’s wrong with you

You must be evil

Oh I know why you do it
You’re just looking for sensation
You got a hold of something
You tell us that it’s news
You don’t have to show that stuff
Can’t you show us some respect
You can tell us we don’t need to see it
We don’t need those cheap effects

You must be evil
You must be evil
I wish you were here

You don’t have to show that stuff
You ain’t fooling no-one
You made my little girl cry
I wish you were here
We all know why you do it
Sometimes you even slow it down
You’re giving out some bad ideas here
I can’t believe that you don’t realise

You must be evil

Q

My arm would be better than a skinny little cat as that is what I have for a pet and would be the choice in that situation. And in that case we would all be dead anyway months down the road Quivver!

Quivver -> RE: Leaving your pet behind (9/9/2005 10:02:07 AM)

I've gotta disagree with the statement of "all dying anyways". I'm far too much of a survivor to allow myself such fatalistic thinking. Sometimes reality sucks. It's all choices, where we live and how. Those who were poor and stuck in the flood zone some would argue had no reason to even own a pet. Others knew a disaster *could* happen, and possibly even took the warning for real and left with their critters before the flood waters hit. Ahhhh reguardless, we are a spoiled society who forgets what kind of things can happen IMHO. Our reliance on our goverment to see to all our needs could some day bite us all in the ass, and not pleasantly I'd like to add. Personally I know I wont ever go easy............

I agree with this. Although his expedition failed, Schakelton will remain in History because every member of his crew survived. They were terribly sad when they had to eat the dogs and puppies, but they would have all died otherwise.
And the relations people from the city have with animals just doesn't make sense. Animals are not babies (yes, I had a dog with whom I played as a child). If a city-dweller visits a farm (not a meat factory...), s/he'll say "oh, a little pig, how cute !". A rational answer would be "yeah, it'll make nice ham soon".

Yet if a war struck and we as a people were starving my critters as much as I love them would feed my children.

Q

Actually I was talking about this, if a WAR struck....and we as people were starving, that's about as bad as it gets....I/we would probably die at the hands of our enemy.

I've survived through a natural disaster...several as a matter of fact. The first one was in 1999 when 1 big and 7 small tornados hit our town on the same day. The second was in 2003 when flood water filled my house 2 feet deep. The third was just last year when flood water filled my house 4.5 feet deep in less than 3 hours( both were 'freak' 500 year floods, and were caused by field tiles up above us)...I had no notice for that one! And with a mandatory evacuation, I still managed to clear my house out, along with all my pets in that short of time! I credit that, for being educated, having a job, which enables me to have a car, money for a hotel, and flood insurance. Although my flood insurance coverage was voided because FEMA came and filled out an assesstment damage report totaling $0.00 coverage due to the lack of their funds. I was cleaning sewage out of my basement for 6 months. I was screwed both ways and still survived! Part of the problem in New Orleans was lack of education, jobs, transportation, and money.

Quivver -> RE: Leaving your pet behind (9/9/2005 12:25:02 PM)

God that really sucks Manndalin, i've lived in a 500 year plane myself but was lucky it never happened. I did have evacuation plans in place for over 25 fuzzy and feathers friends that could have been accomplished in under an hour. I totally agree it's education that's our greatest gift. Yet if War broke out, poachers will be abundant, and this girl is gonna protect whats her's.

Q, who is truly respectfull of what all you had to deal with...........

subcheryl -> RE: Leaving your pet behind (9/9/2005 5:59:35 PM)

I just wanted to say that I saw on news program where they are rescuing animals now saw one where a dog was sitting on a seat of a boat while a solider was walking next to it and it just kind of made me smile, and master said he had heard that little boys dog was found and reunited with the little boy which made my heart sing, i know my boys would not have liked or responded well if that was them having to leave their precious brownie behind, that dog was their gardian, he would lie on the edge of the road and protect them while they played in the creek, when I would call he would watch for each one to come out of the creek bed and run with them home, he would play on their rope swing with them, he actually would run and grab the rope like they did, with his teeth fly and land on all fours, neat trick huh? I never had to worry where on the 40 my boys were because he was there, He died but we still miss him and had a hard time finding one quiet as good and he was, until now with my missy. And I hope and pray that all of those families are reunited if possible with their families, and yes I too have a plan for a natural occourance here like sever weather, I have to put missy in her kennel in the inner bathroom bring in sweetie from outside and take her, tuffy and precious also into the bathroom and wait out the storm in case of flood, you can bet they would go out with us too, the two female dogs fighting or at least barking and snarling at each other, but at least they would be safe, the fish would have to fend for themselves sorry. they are in a tank that weighs close to 300 lbs full no way of moving in short time.

FLButtSlut -> RE: Leaving your pet behind (9/9/2005 7:40:16 PM)

In January of 1996, I lived in NJ for all the nasty blizzards that occurred. After all the snow fell, the weather warmed and the snow began to melt. This caused an electrical fire in my basement. I lived with my mother, my son, and my cat who I had bottle fed as a kitten. When I realized that I could not contain the fire, I had to make a choice. I either got my mother and son to safety or I looked for my cat in a house that was quickly filling with smoke and a floor which was getting ready to burst into flames. This cat has slept with my son in his crib when he was first born and my son loved her dearly.

I could have attempted to go back and find my cat after seeing that my mom and son were safe, but it could have very easily caused my death. What would have happened to my son if I had been killed looking for our beloved pet? Which would my son recover from, his "Desi's" death or mine?

Our beloved cat survived the fire, thankfully. She lived for quite a few more years until she became ill and needed to be put to sleep. We have two toy poodle now (our barking cats) and we love them dearly as well. Perhaps if you don't have human children to consider, you feel you can risk your life for your pets.

No matter how domesticated and dependent on us they become, pets are not now, nor will they ever have an equal status to humans. If there is only one seat left on the rescue boat of a sinking ship, a parent is going to put their CHILD in it, not the family pet, and if YOUR family pet is in the boat leaving no room for my child, either your dog goes overboard or you do, but my child will be on that boat. It is all about perspective and priorities.

I cant imagine the anguish of leaving my pet behind in a situation such as Katrina. They would have to shoot me first before I was forced to leave my pets behind. I realize saving lives come first, but why not let these people take their beloved dog or cat with them too, and have a separate area prepared for animals. I watched a little boy on TV crying so hard he threw up because they wouldnt let his dog on the bus. One of their excuses for not allowing pets is they're afraid for the people with allergies. I think at this point those people wouldnt mind a little boys dog or anyones elses joining them.

LOL I feel just as you do . . . in fact, I stayed behind because of it. And at the same time took in one of my elderly patient's dog. Since I was staying and she wouldn't evacuate without her. You wouldn't believe the amount of animals that were left behind. And left chained and tied in back yards. (there are no longer fences where I live)

Any way . . . nice to be back!

Feline! Welcome back. I am so glad to hear that all is well...or as well as can be under the circumstances. Read your other post.
The difference is that you chose to stay behind with your animals. I would be torn and very unsure of what to do. But I can absolutely guarantee that if I did ever have to leave an animal behnd, he or she would not be locked up or tied down!
But then I have always been the most vocal about the snakes being fed live mice. I say "give the mouse a fighting chance to get away!"
Okay...now all you snake lovers can come after Me! *S*

feline -> RE: Leaving your pet behind (9/15/2005 7:48:17 PM)

Thanks!

There were a few reasons why I was unable to leave, the pets being only one of them. [:)] If you looked around me, you would be amazed that I made it through. Some one was definately watching out for me. [:D] I feel very lucky.

P.S.- on a side note . . . my children would become vegetarians before they would be willing to eat pets. Meat isn't the only source of nutrition.

This Friday Night on Animal Planet on the show Animal Heros/Cops, they are showing a special on the rescue efforts of animals traped by the flood in New Orleans.

If owners of a nursing home are charged with leaving residents behind who died, will pet owners have charges against them as well if there pets are dead even though it was mandated that pets weren't allowed to go with them?

Welcome back feline! Glad your OK!

LOL! I asked my daughter after my post about the 'arm thing', if she would rather have my arm for supper or the cat....she looked at me in horror and said,"neither! I'd eat grass before I'd eat your arm, and I'd never eat my cat!' Well, I said what if there was no grass....she then said,' there's lot of different things to eat desides grass and meat! Bugs have evolved for millions of years, I'm sure there would be plenty around!' She's absolutey right..there will always be bugs!

Thanks . . . I'll keep an eye out for it, I have rescued a few animals while staying here. Dogs, cats, goats, calves, sheep, horses, a rabbit and a cockatiel. The parrot wouldn't come to me. lol
