Nosathro -> Will Congress destory Social Security? (2/5/2008 9:24:42 PM)

As the focus of our socitey is on the election and if you have not read anything the President Budget will increase the national debt even more I have stopped and give some thought about the near future.

As of now the "Baby Boomers" are entering retirement age and can not collect Social Security.  However Congress has been raiding Social Security for some time to pay for the government. Much like they have raided the transportation fund that is meant to keep our road and bridge repaired. That fund comes from a tax on the gasoline we buy.  And look at the condition of our highways.

Anyway as more and more attempt to collect Social Security and there will be fewer people working to pay into it, it called FACA on you pay stub and Congress continues to raid the fund.  Soon or later, more sooner I think, Social Security funds well be gone.  What will Congress do.

For me, have everyone to continue to pay into the system, but no one will collect.  This is not new, World War I Vets were promised a bonus and even went to Washington DC to protest not getting it. Their tents cities were destoried by order of the President, even today that bonus has never been paid, the reason, no money.

Well the same thing occur when Social Security goes broke?

I would like it to be dismantled or at least allow people to opt out of it voluntarily.  I would rather put my savings into something that is going to gain interest, which social security does not do.  It's a antiquated system that's not needed anymore.

SS may go down in history as the world's largest pyramid scheme. However, it's unlikely that our politicians will gather up the stones to shut it down in an organized manner any time soon, as it has far too much inertia.

i suspect that the shutdown will finally come amidst a major economic crisis, when they can no longer borrow enough money to buy the ink needed to print more money. When that will be, i'm not sure, but it will certainly be an intesting time...

Well, Congress needs to stop spending money that we don't have.

Nosathro, Tal;

They take. I do not take. They are worse than dogs because they take from their fellow humans while producing nothing.

If I ever get like that send my ass down to the river to die.

I agree completely. There should be an opt out. Even today everyone can see that the meager amount sent each month by social security is not enough to live off. How is such a system to handle the future? It will crash eventually, and unfortunately as will our whole economy if we continue spending so wildly.

If I remember correctly, Social Security was created during the depression as a tempory measure to bring up the economy.   Now it is treated just like another tax.  How long is temporary supposed to be?

Once there is a new tax, the govt. is sure to keep it's iron hand on it. I can attest to the excise tax on each car in MA levied each year- a supposed war tax...um...wwII that is, still collected today.

There is.  I posted many things in the past on becoming "sovereign". Took lots of ridicule for it too.

Lots of people and a couple states seem to want to opt out of our useless federal government now days.

Ken SS is part of a network of legislation that gave the feds by your acquiesence the authority to review your personal income every year.  Not only is it treated like a tax but was a selfsupporting separate system until they robbed so now they put it on as part of the federal budget.

The feds have robbed every program they have set up for the people.

Actually there is an opt out for certain people

I'd venture to say about 99% of us here, thats a non-starter though, once you read the fine print.

The Social Security System is held hostage by problems with government revenues. To avoid confusion, let me digress with a little background information.

The Federal Government makes money via one of three methods: Taxes, Licensing Fees, and Sale of Properties/Services. When the government fails to meet its obligations one of the three has to be enacted to bring in extra funds. That's all it can do.

Problems arise when dueling economic theories are enacted by the various political factions who run the government; the top two contenders are: The Mellon system--a longtime favorite of conservatives--stipulates that if you cut taxes and give the people money they'll spend the money on business which gets the economy moving and more wealth spreads around. In theory, more money will come in to the government from the new business generated.

The second economic favorite is the Keynesian System, in which the government deliberately spends more than it earns because an economy works best that way. Why? No one really knows. Practice, however, has shown that as long as there is a bit more going out than coming in, the economy moves faster.

The problems which have developed which have trapped Social Security in its present bind are almost ludicrous in hindsight. Ronald Reagan was a great champion of the Mellon Plan, but then he screwed the pooch by combining massive tax cuts with an incredible outlay of military spending. Result: bigger deficits. Many historians now believe that this was deliberate. Always a champion of little or no social spending, political analysts believe that Reagan deliberately engineered the deficits so that politicians would be forced to gut or even eliminate social programs in order to balance the budget. To do so would have been political suicide, so Congress resorted to raiding the Social Security funds to pay for other programs. This turned Social Security into a "pay-as-you-go" system, and the problem has continued until today.

Now, when George W. Bush began the wars in the Middle East, he repeated the mistake that Reagan did, slashing taxes and instituting all-out military spending. As happened in the 1980's we have huge budget deficits, but lack the revenue to pay them off. Compounding the problem is the fact that the bulk of the Baby Boomers are nearing retirement and will be asking for the return of the money they paid into the system. It's not there of course, having been used to pay for the older people who retired before them.

So, Taxes, Licensing Fees, and Sale of Properties/Services? Which will it be? There are nowhere near enough properties or services to pay for the millions of retirees. Licensing Fees? What could the Federal Government license that everyone would want, in order to pay for retirees. The only thing that comes to mind are drugs, and that's a political hot potato! The only thing that's safe (relatively) are taxes.

So, get ready to pay higher taxes, regardless of who wins the election!
