StormsSlave -> Quick question... (2/6/2008 4:23:51 AM)

Since I'm new to this, I don't know all the lingo.

Someone tell me...is there a difference between slave and sub?  If so, what?

Dnomyar -> RE: Quick question... (2/6/2008 4:29:21 AM)

You have to go to an auction block to buy a slave. You can get a sub at any of the sub stores.

HalloweenWhite -> RE: Quick question... (2/6/2008 4:37:02 AM)

Submissives have limits and safewords. Slaves have limits chosen for them (or so I'm told).

ProlificNeeds -> RE: Quick question... (2/6/2008 4:58:28 AM)

Labels!
Most people define them differently, but in a rough general idea, to me, slaves are often considered owned, property, and with a more extream power exchange than those who identify as subs, who recognize they want to be submissive, but also recognize they do have limits and expectations that will not coincide with their partners.
It all depends really on what a persons definition of the words mean. Worry less about the words, more about what's behind them.

kyraofMists -> RE: Quick question... (2/6/2008 6:47:28 AM)

In our family, there is a significant difference between a submissive and a slave.  However, there is no generalization that works for everyone.

Your best bet is to talk to the people you meet and find out what the difference is for them, but don't try to apply that difference to others.

he finds the term "slave" more asthetically pleasing.

crouchingtigress -> RE: Quick question... (2/6/2008 6:51:41 AM)

honestly its not a quick question...i have seen this topic go one for 15 pages once.

anyway, the short answer is the is no rule book, one of the things that can be frustrating about the lifestye also can be freeing because you get to make what ever works for you....work for you.

Owner4SexSlave -> RE: Quick question... (2/6/2008 6:57:42 AM)

Personally for me, it's a matter of the Power that is exchanged.  You might have seen TPE (total power exchange) used on profiles and elsewhere.   Generally slaves have submitted total power to another person.  While submissives have not given up full and total power.

For some people the word slave has a certain appeal to be called that, because it gives them a warm and fuzzy feeling inside.

The quickest way to answer this question is to say that there is no answer. Debates on the topic go on and on and on and on.

Kana -> RE: Quick question... (2/6/2008 7:05:50 AM)

A slave has only one question:
To obey or not.
Thats it

LOL... this why I've come to my conclusion of using TPE.   Because one thing is for certain a submissive in a TPE relationship is a slave, slam dunk on that one!

There is no difference, both are human beings.

As I am sure you are seeing by now, there is no "one" answer nor an easy answer.  One dominant's 'submissive' is another dominant's 'slave' and one dominant's 'slave' is another's 'submissive'.

For myself, seen from a D/s context only, the difference would be in the amount of power exchanged.  Like many, I tend to see a slave as someone who gives up almost, if not completely, all of their power except the ability to release themselves and refuse to participate in something illegal or immoral...as noted, that is in MY world though.  Your world may differ.

For one thing, there is no shortened nick for "slave" that equates to either a sumersible vehicle armed with torpedos or a sandwich, and I rather envy them that.

charlotte12 -> RE: Quick question... (2/6/2008 8:40:52 AM)

For us it has to do with the power exchange.  I cannot say no to Master while a woman who was submissive to him might have a little more leeway.  I don't want to suggest that a slave is a "better" or more obedient submissive, they're generally tend to be people who crave more control in more areas of their lives....at least in my experience.

So my answer to this question is pretty much what everyone else has said.  There is no one definition.  I would just stress again that you figure out what it means to you and communicate with a potential partner about your meanings as well as how he sees it.  You'll can get into big trouble if you assume the person you're talking to has the same definitions of slave or submissive that you do.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Quick question... (2/6/2008 3:43:59 PM)

You'll find there are very few questions which have answers found anywhere other than within yourself- as much as you might want so hard to fit in and feel part of something.

Take your pick:

StormsSlave -> RE: Quick question... (2/6/2008 4:57:33 PM)

It's not about labels or anything.  I just wanted to understand people's posts, and know what they meant.  Thanks eveyrone for your help.  I think I have a better understanding now.

Nineveh -> RE: Quick question... (2/6/2008 8:54:57 PM)

As people keep saying, everyone defines it differently.  I think the use of the term TPE is a bit more clear, and is often used for the same thing that is implied by Slave, but not always.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Quick question... (2/6/2008 9:00:35 PM)

And yet someonel ike me thinks TPE is a Totally Pointless Expression and much prefer to use the phrase ultimate authority transfer.

The obvious difference is that they are spelled differently... after that... it's rather subjective.
