I am not sure whether to post this here, or in the Alternative LIfestyles in the News section. But since this is an article relating to all lifestyles, and is about Katrina and religion, i'll put it here. This man actually names the cities that he thinks deserve purging.

after the link, i am pasting the email i sent to the woman who reported the story.

y'know, this kind of attitude that one way of doing things is the right way, and all others are not "real" or "right" or "true" is rampant in many more facets of society than just religion. it all kind of depends on the flag in the hand of the person waving it to proclaim their "betterdom"

It is human nature, but to do it to another's detriment, when one knows they are causing harm? Shame. It is difficult to try not to judge the judgemental, is it not? I am doing it myself.

Pastor Bennett is not showing any compassion. He and his church may be giving out aid and "helping" evacuees, but this help is not from a Christian, loving, human kindness and compassion source, it is from a self-righteous and holier-than-thou place. This man, and the people supporting him are saying "We will help you, because it is the RIGHT thing to do, but you deserved this, so we won't offer you solace."

And even if it is considered an "Act of God," does this man think that in the times of Noah, he would have been the one chosen to build the Ark? Shame on him.

We have churches like that in my town, too. Obviously, they are expounding a popular view, otherwise they would not be so well attended. Yes, it is shameful.

After news leaked last year about Dark Odyssey being held in a resort and having a mild protest over it including one women who stated she would never let her child stay on one of the beds again...not much surprises me about people's crazy perspectives anymore.

Only once a week, and it's a business lunch. They share ideas to increase the global market of Religious Beliefs TM. I think the sign is horrid.

very good point.

i think it was Voltaire that said "I may not agree with what you have to say, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it." That may be a paraphrase.

this church does have a right to put whatever they would like on their sign. Shame on them for putting that, though.

Quite close. My translation : " I do not agree with what you say but I will fight to the end so that you may say it. "

Anyway, are all american baptist churches related somehow ? Are there several groups of baptist churches ? I know the international baptist church is a group of hundreds of churches, is it related to this one ? If a church does something horrible like this, isn't the responsibility shared by the other baptist churches ?

They are members of loosely federated groups that really don't have much authority over the individual preacher.

This is one of the big problems. These churches are actually in competition with each other, often with another Baptist church just down the block. This sets up a situation where some preacher try to be literally "holier than thou." Given that fear and hate sell better than love, it's not surprising that this sort of extreme stance gets taken.

It's like back in the McCarthy days of the 50's. Most people assume his enemy was the communists. The communists were just his tool. What he was really fighting against was more rational and open-minded conservatives who could be effectively brought into line by the old "soft on communisms" threat.

The first page when googling "traitor" is http://www.probush.com/traitor.htm . Which gives what I thought was an ironical definition of "traitor" : "Traitor: If you do not support our President's decisions you are a traitor."
But after browsing the probush.com website, I'm not sure anymore, are they serious or are they kidding... I'm afraid they could be as serious as the madmen of godhatesamerica.com .

I am a Canadian and No I do not belief in a lot of Bush's politics. Although it's funny when he says Nuculear. [:D]
However I was reading the local paper today and resident from Niagara went with his mother and brother to New Orleans as a vacation at the time Katrina was just a tropical storm.
After the hurricane came through (which he admitted he slept through) Him, his brother and mother went to the local area to help out. His mother is a registered nurse. He was treated different for 2 reasons...he was white, and his mother was helping. He felt guilty for having special treatment.
These people were put into a building that had no running water AT ALL, everywhere was a bathroom.
he stated he didn't want to make this an issue of black vs. being white but it was. A lot of people looked at him in a threatening way, one guy even licked his lips.
I feel the way these people were treated were disgusting, the cops were arresting people for stealing tvs at a walmart which was under water, mean while there's a guy out in the open raping a child?
I'm not saying Americans are bad, but I'm saying someone should have gone there and rescued those people right away, they were ordered to evacuate yet there were no cars, no taxis the young man said they couldn't even find a rental car. So how were they supposed to leave again?
This is one of the most disorganized rescue missions I think I've ever seen. I may be young but what's that quote in boy scouts oh ya, "always be prepared."
