Owner59 -> Are the republicans tearing apart?lol (2/7/2008 3:38:05 PM)

From Sam Stein's HuffPo report of the reaction at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) to Romney's speech today that he's leaving the race:

"It is like now I have to choose between the left and the radical left," said Jeffrey Goldberg, a Michigan Republican and Romney supporter.

"John McCain's appearance here will be like David Duke going before the NAACP."

wo-boy.lol

That`s pretty cold.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Romney's introductory speaker, Laura Ingraham, had set the stage by taking digs at McCain, declaring, among other things:
"It is not enough to say you were a foot soldier in the Reagan Revolution. The question is what have you done for conservatism lately."
And: "An obsession with endless bipartisan compromise does not keep us free."
And Rush.....
http://youdecide08.foxnews.com/2008/02/05/romney-backpedals-over-bob-dole-comments/
"Rush Limbaugh kept up his relentless criticism of John McCain on Super Tuesday, opening his nationally syndicated radio program with a blast at McCain’s conservative credentials and integrity.
Limbaugh, whose show is heard on 600 stations across the country, accused the McCain camp of being “dishonest,” “insecure” and “resorting to the same kind of politics as Hillary Clinton.”
RUSH:  "I understand what you're saying.  I hate to tell you this, but she's not alone.  I'm here to tell you, if either of these two guys get the nomination, it's going to destroy the Republican Party, it's going to change it forever, be the end of it.  A lot of people aren't going to vote.  You watch."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Limbaugh repeated NewsMax.com's false claim that McCain "admitted that torture worked on him"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tom Delay trashes McCain at private event.
Rush Limbaugh, as befits the grand master, has put it most correctly, and probably first (I don't know for sure, since I don't regularly listen to the other two).  The mainstream media is CHOOSING John McCain for the Republican Party, along with the Republican establishment.  As I have told you, McCain has sucked up to the mainstream media for 20 YEARS or so, and this is his payback (even though I have also told you that they will abandon him in the general election).  I did not come to this view of McCain recently.  I formed my view of McCain way back--as a result of his constant, publicity seeking appearances on the old "Imus in the Morning" radio program.   McCain has been perfectly willing to TRASH conservatives over this period of some twenty years.  The point here is that this week's WINNERS of "the Finger" were perfectly aware of this BEFORE IOWA.  Limbaugh, in fact, took on McCain--in favor of the present President Bush--in the 2000 Republican nomination fight.
`~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What Rick Santorum said:
 what Santorum said about McCain to Mark Levin last week: "The bottom line is that I served 12 years with him, 6 years in the United States Senate as leader, one of the leaders of the Senate - the number-three leader - who had the responsibility of trying to put together the conservative agenda, and almost at every turn on domestic policy, John McCain was not only against us, but leading the charge on the other side."
I think some members of the conservative establishment (notably Rush Limbaugh and most of the writers of National Review) are also going off the deep end in their obsessive attacks on John McCain. Rick Santorum, Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin and Katherine Lopez need to take a chill pill and stop trashing the GOP's potentially strongest general election candidate. And, even though he is not my candidate, they could lay off Mike Huckabee too.
Will the neo-cons fall in line behind someone they despise?
Or will the GOP split into the regular republicans(like McCain) and the neo-con lunatic fringe?
You really, REALLY need to learn how to put your links in the words, so that the page doesn't go all the way to Timbuctoo, on the right of my monitor.
It's the little globe, with a paperclip under it.
So Romney quits. Rush conservatives hate McCain and loathe Huckabee. Might be true of most non evangelical conservatives as well. So I ask the GOP stalwarts, what now? Do you draft somebody, Santorum, Fred Thompson or somebody else, for an independent run? Do you hold your nose and support McCain? Do you throw behind Huckabee and try and get him the nomination? Do you sit out the election and snipe from the sidelines for the next four years?
KenDckey -> RE: Are the republicans tearing apart?lol (2/7/2008 4:56:54 PM)
I am for pulling huckabee in.    I think with Romney dropping out, they are galvanizing.   Regardless of Rush
Hilary would make me vote for McCain.   I'd not even vote Hilary dog catcher.
SugarMyChurro -> RE: Are the republicans tearing apart?lol (2/7/2008 5:30:52 PM)
I think the next 4-8 years are something to stick onto someone else, just like a "kick me" sign on the back. That person and his party will get blamed for the pain of any possible economic recovery. Either that or the looting will continue at an unprecedented pace and we'll probably have something like riots or actual revolution before it's all over.
The USA is a banana republic disguised as leviathan. But if the Soviet Union can split apart as it did, so can we.
Certainly, I favor California's cessation from the union. Hell, I even favor the separation of Northern from Southern California. We could make a fortune just selling them water.
luckydog1 -> RE: Are the republicans tearing apart?lol (2/7/2008 5:43:40 PM)
Republicans might be tearing apart.  I like Mc Caine for the most part.  If I were a Democrat, I would be laughing my head off today, but keep in the back of my mind, the situation could be very different in 2 weeks.
One might also want to keep in mind, that those who criticise Mc Cain the hardest today, will have the most credibility to say, "Even though he's not perfect, he will be better than <insert Democrat>.  And we just have to keep the pressure on him after the election."   And those people will be able to demand things frrom Mc Cain in exchange for thier support.
So I am not too worried.
How are the Democrats going to handle most of the people choosing Obama, and Hillary getting the nomination anyway?   I think there will be a bloc of people very pissed about that.  Don't Democrats have some sort of theme about "votes have to count"?
popeye1250 -> RE: Are the republicans tearing apart?lol (2/7/2008 6:11:11 PM)
They'd have to do a LOT better than McCain to get my vote.
I'm waiting for the third party candidates.
bipolarber -> RE: Are the republicans tearing apart?lol (2/7/2008 7:01:26 PM)
Well, let's see...
The Republicans started a war with lies...
made the US into a torture state...
rammed us into record national debt...
have been dismantling the Constitution...
Are evesdropping on us all...
they've taxed the middle class almost unto extinction...
They've forced religion into classrooms...
They've rigged elections...
They're trying to pack the Supreme Court so only their POV is represented.
   They tried to redistrict states so only they could win, making the US effectively a one party nation.
They banned scientific research for political reasons.
They committed treason by outing a CIA operative and everyone she worked with.
They have put money and power ahead of actually doing their job: governing the US.
Oh, and now the Republicans are having a spot of trouble? Oh, golly gee whiz... I'm so broke up over that!
Burn you bastards!
Doesn't make much difference really...
By 2012 people will be so sick of the leftism the GOP will sweep back into power.
Remember after Nixon how everyone said the GOP was finished? Then we got Jimmy Carter for 4 years. That experiment didnt last long. Everyone was running to Ronald Reagan to be saved.
Get ready for another depression. We are heading for another Carter administration.
From National Review Online
  • You have refused to answer whether you would sign your own immigration bill if it were to reach your desk as president, saying that it's not going to happen. But what about a bill that could reach your desk, HR 4088, Heath Shuler's SAVE Act? It is focused exclusively on enforcement — in other words, no "path to citizenship" — and has more than 140 bipartisan co-sponsors. The Senate counterpart of the Shuler bill also has bipartisan support. If it comes up for a vote this year, will you vote for it? And if it reaches your desk next year, will you sign it?
            You are missing the bigger picture, O59.  That you are in great joy over items like this link that will make some liberal-types cringe ought to tell you something.
           The Republicans don't have a great legacy to run on.  Perhaps the best thing for them would be to let Hillary crush the spirits of young Dems when she steals Obama's nomination, and take her policies into the White House.  A couple years of those policies driving unemployment and inflation numbers to what a recession REALLY looks like (but they would work, if only her subjects would OBEY), and a very unified party will seize control right back.
          That might not be such a great thing either.
    ~FR~
    The divisions started in the late 90's, and then accelerated in the last 5 years. Too many look for idealogical purity, and cannot compromise on many issues. Seems there are many segments that will hold onto a single issue, and that is all that determines their support.
    Rest assured there is one thing that will likely galvanize them, and that is Hillary. If you want to see people set aside their principles real fast on these single issue republicans, it will be the threat of Hillary making it into the Whitehouse.
    If Hillary is nominated, I will vote for which ever republican they give the nomination to. If Obama is nominated, I am going to do a side by side comparison with him and likely McCain. I won't look at just the issues either, but at integrity. While I may disagree with Obama on some issues, from everything I have seen so far, I can respect him more than McCain. McCain can draw independents but so can Obama. Hillary is too polarized to pull many votes from the middle.
    Feric -> RE: Are the republicans tearing apart?lol (2/7/2008 10:09:59 PM)
    Actually, it's not so much that the GOP is tearing itself apart, it's that they are reaping the crop they sowed over the last 15 years by allying themselves with the Christian Right.  As Kevin Phillips noted in his excellent book, American Theocracy,the GOP has been transformed into "the first religious party in U.S. history," Phillips argues, and it is ushering in an "American Disenlightenment" that rejects the separation of church and state and ignores the teachings of science. He also asserts that such ideas animate the Bush administration -- worrying, for example, about "White House implementation of domestic and international political agendas that seem to be driven by religious motivations and biblical worldviews."
    The GOP has been under the religious theocrats for so long that for secularists like McCain, trying to reassert old-line Republican values (limited gov't, low taxes, etc.) is more work than it should be. More effort is being spent trying to control the party than in beating the Democrats.
