ORIGINAL: Noah quote:
ORIGINAL: Feric I believe that Robert Heinlein was right: only those who have served a tour in the U.S. military should be allowed to run for president. Reason: Those who actuallly served would be less likely to put others in harm's way. Meanwhile, veteran US presidential McCain (and war veteran that that, not merely a miltary veteran) wants to keep putting more troops in harm's way if elected, whereas his opponent candidates with no military experience want to minimize the number. Denying a crucial bit of reality in order to explore what might result is a great way to get a science fiction story started. But I'm gonna agree with you that it'd be a controversial way to qualify a presidential candidate. Truth to tell, I've been ignoring McCain because I just can't take him seriously. But, consider that if Heinlein's rule had been in place by the 2000 election, George W. Bush would not have been allowed to run, and we wouldn't be in the mess that we are today!
