I don't know whether this is controversial or not, but for me a long held belief is the return of bond slaves. In that a person holding a debt, may pay off that debt by working for a creditor for an agreed time until that debt is cleared. In this day and age where most work during the day, the 'payment' could be made in the evening and other times off like weekends. A severe cut in free time is a good way to curtail taking on a debt in the first place and for those that have trouble with their funds, working 'in kind' might be of a help to them. What other controversy, oh yes, that one, adopt an element of Sharia law , or old Anglo Saxon law in that someone who causes death, injury or harm or damage to a person or their family has to pay, 'Blood money' or wergild in anglo saxon. To me, this might be a way to curb people's liking to hurt people. Honestly, it is got to be better than what exists now, a spell in prison or community work and sod all for the victims. Victim compensation schemes, get real, the state should not be paying, the perpetrator should!
