Thank you for the responses, Katy and LaTigress ... [:D]

I like myself just fine ... I'm just trying to avoid overly grand feelings of self. To me, more people my age should consider this tact. Self love, and especially relationship love ... those are pretty new emotions to younger people, and anything new takes on a kind of "coolness" based on it's newness.

Besides, if there is one thing we have more than enough of in this world, is people that are far too in love with themselves. [;)]

Love exists when you value the needs of another more than your own.

lusciouslips19 -> RE: What is love? (2/13/2008 3:47:51 PM)

I feel kinds dumb as a just posted a new thread of exactly the same question. Sorry Mods. here is my post.

Great subject huh? I have been thinking about this due to Valentine's day. Do I really know what love is? Other than the kind a parent feels for a child,how do you recognize it? I contemplated this because I have been in a relationship for less that 4 months. I like him alot and maybe love him, but I'm not sure what love is? I definately feel emotion and passion. When I am being Dominated or in the throws of passion and breathless I think, "I love you". but isn't this passionate feeling of love through sex just merely lust? Women do feel emotionally from the sexual , so do we mistake lust for sex? If we do mistake love for sex,than what constitues love and how do we recognize it?

Hard to believe i was married for 12 years. Maybe that wasnt love but just security and farmiliarity?

So all my Valentines tell me your thoughts on love and the recognition of it?

Raiikun -> RE: What is love? (4/5/2009 3:08:43 PM)

Well since someone apparently necro bumped this already lol...

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

First time I've ever had a thread zombified and brought back from the dead - it's official, I'm a collarme vet. Cheers.

Saint -> RE: What is love? (4/5/2009 5:47:05 PM)

Someone once said that love is a beautiful flower that needs lots of sunshine, water and nourishment or it withers and dies. I used to believe in love when I was younger but life's experiences have taught me that love is an illusion brought about by a chemical opiate in the brain. That and deep pockets. Love is bought and paid for everyday by our constant refusal to look beyond the veneer of our own self-truths. This self induced blindness allows us to overlook flaws within each of us in order that we can find some sort of fleeting happiness. Even if it is simply an illusion on both parties part. Otherwise the truth would test the sanity of the strongest person. That is what love is. Nothing more, nothing less than mutually occurring self-delusions that can be transiently bought and paid for at the cost of our ignorance. But I suppose people are willing to pay any price for a glimpse of any sort of happiness.

Love is knowing a person may take that heart and break it, and giving it to them anyway. It cannot be understood or known unless you have fell into it.

The most powerful of things. Of all the emotions, if this one were taken away from humans we would likely destroy ourselves within 100 years.

I don't think you really hit old-timer status until someone resurrects one of your own threads that's so old, you don't even recognize it as yours, and you hop right in and start arguing with the original premise.

I recognise this cynical view. I have encountered it often, or something very similar anyway. It usually comes from feeling desperately sad and from hurt.

OrionTheWolf -> RE: What is love? (4/5/2009 8:06:11 PM)

Love is many things, and there are different forms of love. The greeks seperated them into four words: eros, philia, storge, and thelema.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_words_for_love

Plato and Aristotle both have written about them.

Love is most often self centered, deriving from the ego, but when balanced with the super ego it can mean one would sacrifice something of themselves for the one they hold affection for.

To me love is an emotion that drives us, but if not held in control, it can overcome us towards obsession. Love is one of the most dangerous emotions there is, as it often overrides rationale. Maybe it is supposed to at times.

Damn it all, why can't I be this smart?

The first thing I thought of was, "What is love, baby don't hurt me, don't hurt me, no more" with lots of head bobbing,

cpK69 -> RE: What is love? (4/5/2009 8:14:19 PM)

~fr~

Love is an equation toward action, not an emotion.

Kim

Edited because I forgot the "toward action" part.
