Diane

I admire your taste in cars- I've always been fond of American muscle machines.  My first car was a 71 Skylark with a 350 c.i. V8, and I still miss it on occasion- even if the front end did get a bit floaty around 100 or so.  When I was a kid, a buddy had a very beat up 72 Challenger with the 318- (think it was a 72, it's a long time ago) I remember having some issues with the gearbox and rolling out of a toll plaza in third with nary a hiccup.  Toyed around buying a '70 Mach 1 with the 390- that was a kick.  A buddy of mine just picked up a new Impala SS- it's a lot of fun.

Aneirin- auto tranny's are beefier these days, it's not so easy to get a performance clutch.  Ford blew it on my car, a Focus SVT, although I must admit, the drivetrain on my Neon ACR held up wonderfully- the cars got 180k miles or so and a chunk of that was spent towing a boat.  Also, when you've got more horsepower, autos are less of an anathema, and they're very hard to argue with in traffic jams.  I actually like the paddle shifters on the A4s I've driven.  And yeah- US cars are maybe 85% autos, but apparently manuals are making a comeback along with the CVT.

I guess I wouldn't buy a muscle car unless I had more dinero- but I always liked the look of that Magnum wagon.  Probably one hell of a regattamobile.

And if we figure out biodiesel or biogas (gasoline from ethanol) the day of the muscle car might not be over.....

Has the Challenger came back for naught?

I actually agreed with a lot of that article.  It's clear that the handwriting is on the wall for muscle cars and SUVs that don't get good fuel mileage with current gasoline prices.  However, neck snapping acceleration is not going away- there are two options-
1) electrics deliver max torque at zero rpm.  Hence electrics can deliver better performance with lower total energy inputs- who can drive 200 mph anyway?  A practical limit on US roads is probably around 120, and isn't there a defacto top end on the autobahn of 155 mph?  Electrics will get you there quicker- they just won't have the legs to keep going- which in most driving, is a waste of weight anyway.

2) There will still be fun to drive cars in the future- and who knows, they might even be gasoline powered if we get the biogasoline up and working.  It's also not too hard to swap to ethanol- I think that's what's fueling Nascar.  Current technology has certainly gotten cars reasonably green in terms of non-CO2 pollutants- our air is improving.  As long as we grow our fuel rather than dig it out of the ground, it really doesn't matter how much we burn.

I just hope like hell we're not burning fossil fuels 3 decades from now- I think we should aim to transition in less than a decade.

Oh yeah- for any fans of vanishing point- just bought the DVD at www.deepdiscount.com for $6.  Decided it was worth checking out.  Since there's a deal going on (buy 2 get 3) I also picked up Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry for the Charger afficianodos.

While everyone is bumping around in the cloud of dust raised by the Ford, Chevy, and Mopar muscle cars, see that dot way up ahead?

Here's a close up of a real muscle car.

Shades of Mark Donahue and Trans Am racing.

I was a bowtie fan back in the day....1970 Nicky Chevrolet Nova...396 bored to 412 with dual Holly 850s (OPECS secret carb of choice for 5mpg muscle cars) probably 500 HP but never dynoed it...Hurst Shifter, BIAS ply tires (now that was an adventure) and posi traction. You could burn rubber in all four gears at any speed. Mostly because the tires SUCKED!!

Today its a Charger SRT8 with 425 HP, 0-60 in 4.9 sec (they even give you an ET clock in the hidden programming) and handles like its on rails with the Goodyear F1s on it. Its got nav...great AC....fantastic seats and a huge trunk. If I'm easy on the gas I can manage 20mpg highway.

The good ole days were great but today's muscle cars just plain kick the crap out of the good ole boys.

Ah kool!

When I was 16 my father had a 327 positrak ambassador with a borg warner tranny.   My instigator cousin talked me into doing a figure 8  with it.  It did it and it was there for like 5 years before it was worn off the road and I just about sunk through the seat when my father drove past it and said "what asshole would do something liek that to their car".   LOL

I finally told him when I was in my 30's who did the nasty deed...LOL

Ramblers are real sleepers nice torquy motors and good hole shots.   I am still a mopar fan though, the best of all worlds.
