Status: offline 		I recently got a message that sounded nice enough... for someone whose first language clearly isn't English. The sender's profile indicates somewhere in the US not particularly near me, although it's possible she wasn't hoping for a real time meeting anyhow. But then she asked me to reply via e-mail, to an address in a foreign top-level domain. Is there something I should be suspicious of here? It sounds fishy, but I also don't want to slam someone just because they're visiting the US from another country, if they're trying to be nice. I was thinking that I should just reply that she should stick to messaging me at CollarMe.com if she's serious.

Why would it be more serious to keep using CM ? If you don't want to give your email, create an anonymous mail account in 2 minutes ! CM's mail system doesn't work perfectly after all, that's probably why she wants to use normal email...

Status: offline 		frenchpet, I didn't mean that using CM was more "serious", but that if SHE were serious, i.e. for real and not trying to scam me in some way, that she would stick to what seems to be a fairly workable mail system here--even if it isn't exactly real e-mail. After all, I believe there are actually warnings posted someplace here about people soliciting your e-mail address.

I do have a couple of free e-mail accounts, but still, I was just wondering if anyone knew of any particular type of shadiness that would account for the warnings posted about people asking for e-mail addresses.

One thing to remember is that even something like a hotmail account isnt always effective against hacking - and I think that is what the OP is more about than anything else - not that the messenger isnt serious - just worried against being spammed or hacked - if I misunderstood, I apologise.

I personally take a while before giving out my email.

Why don't you ask her ?
Half of the messages I sent with CM were either sent several times or only partially, or both partially and several times. Plus it's impossible to make directories here, so if she's serious your messages will be mixed with tons of messages she qualifies as spam. In fact if you're serious I don't see any reason not to use a normal email, that can be kept on your email software, neatly sorted.
I don't understand either how the use of a normal email would help someone to scam. And if you get spammed on a new email, you know where it comes from.

Status: offline 		until you feel somewhat comfortable with her, I would request her to continue writing you to your cm mailbox after all if you feel better after a few emails back and forth than can give it to her,
