WASHINGTON - The heck with Congress’ big stimulus bill. The way to get the country out of recession — and most people think we’re in one — is to get the country out of Iraq, according to an Associated Press-Ipsos poll.

Pulling out of the war ranked first among proposed remedies in the survey, followed by spending more on domestic programs, cutting taxes and, at the bottom end, giving rebates to poor people in hopes they’ll spend the economy into recovery.

The $168 billion economic rescue package Congress rushed to approval this week includes rebates of $600 to $1,200 for most taxpayers, the hope being that they will spend the money and help revive ailing businesses. President Bush is expected to sign the measure next week. Poor wage-earners, as well as seniors and veterans who live almost entirely off Social Security and disability benefits, would get $300 checks.

Wal-Mart Super Center for Milk, Eggs, Bread. Let them eat French Toast!

Spending 168 Billion to "SAVE" money? Only in DC....

It seems so simple that to save money, you simply stop spending it.

That`s what I say. Those checks will do jack shit, and only put deeper into debt.

We need tidal shifts in policy, not lip service and a wait and see approach.

Knowing that spending 2 billion dollars a month in Iraq will end(at some point soon),would bring some confidence back to the American consumer.

WTF were those ass holes thinking when they saddled us with this (new) debt?

WTF were those ass holes thinking when they snookered us into this 10 year(plus) war?

I remember one neo-con ass hole saying that the war would pay for itself.Lol, yeah right!

And another saying "the war could last 6 days,6 days, I doubt 6 months"

Now we`re past 6 years and with no end in sight.

All the neo-cons can say is we must keep providing cannon fodder and targets for the insurgence to kill. The rate of death is less now,so therefore we must be winning.Yippie,we`re winning.

Fuck`n bull shit, we`re winning.

When we`re out of that mess, will we be winning.

That *is* what this is all about. They've realized that *everyone else* wants to pretend that they're playing the Home Game...

And since the purpose of Government is to hire Government Employees, those employees need something to do. And what they do is spend money from the treasury. Usually, it's Lockheed/Martin who benefits. Now we all get to pretend that we're just as relevant to the Government.

~FR~

Take the money that is being used in Iraq, rebuild alot of our own infrastructure that is aging (creates jobs), give incentives for creation of small businesses (create jobs), throw a hell of a lot into getting off of fossil fuel.

I'm still trying to figure out what we'll "win" in Iraq.
Hundreds of billions of Taxpayer dollars to "rebuild" Iraq after 30 years of neglect by Saddam while our infrastructure crumbles.
And Bush said he wouldn't do any "Nation Building."
The only "winners" in this whole thing are the "Contractors".
You have to laugh at the people who say that if we leave Iran will invade Iraq.
Then we'll see an "insurgency."
And you have to laugh at McCain who says if we don't fight them over there "they'll follow us home!"
Ah,....John, secure the borders! We could hire 50,000 more border guards, Ice Agents and double the size of the Coast Guard and it wouldn't cost us 10% of what we're spending right now in Iraq!
Bush was right, "Mission Accomplished", we got Saddam so get out.
The sooner we get out the sooner the Iraqis can take over.
We keep hearing for the last 3 years, "but the Iraqis aren't ready to take over."
If we get out they will be!
We just keep hearing one excuse after another.
Al qeada and Bin Laden are in Pakistan, not in Iraq.
You don't need whole Brigades of Troops to go after them.
You use "spooks" (C.I.A. and "others") and air strikes.
One thing about this is that it's always the same companies and the same people who are getting rich off of this kind of stuff. Year after year.

So yes, rather than save taxpayer monies for a legit purpose - like say universal healthcare (like every other western nation has) - they want to keep spending money on these wars of choice. In fact, they want it so badly that they are willing to sort of "bribe" us by offering back again some of our own tax money!

Brilliant!

It's like some thug takes your wallet filled with several hundred dollars and offers you back a $20 to make amends. WTF?!
