Seeing as we seem to have a rash of threads lately on the good 'ole'days and peoples lives, I was wondering about ancestry, from whence we came, not one of us being a pure blood anything. So, I will ask the question ;

Are people aware here aware of their ancestry, what they are made up of , in the form of geneaology ? In that not only a country of past origin, but what those people were in that country?

Does anyone think  their ancestry, that is a type of people in that ancestry influences who they are themselves, today in this existance ?

Do you think  your ancestry was very much different from what you are now ?

( I find Geneaology fascinating and indeed would love to find out what part of Africa I come from, but costs are high)

I'm not exactly sure what my biological ancestry was - I believe it's mostly northern European. My adoptive ancestry is Scottish and Swedish. I learned about some Swedish tradition from my grandmother (my grandfather being of the opinion that once American, he was no longer Swedish). It was my grandmother's great pleasure to teach at least one of her grandchildren how to make Swedish meatballs. I learned more about modern Sweden from our Swedish exchange student when I was in high school.

I lean more towards the Scottish side, though, even though my dad was also totally immersed in American culture. I even took bagpipe lessons for a while. I learned which clan I belong to (Gunn) and have attended many Highland Games (caber tossing, anyone?).

All that being said, I still think of myself as American, as the culture and background of the country as a whole is too rich with input from every place in the world to concentrate on the contributions of just a few.

My grandfather came from affluent Russian Jews, his parents (clearly they had an idea what was coming war-wise) moved to the UK prior to WWII - that's as far as I know about his roots. My grandmother was typically Irish, beautiful lady and from a traditional working class family - lots of children and the resultant poverty. My Grandfather fought in WWII, was stationed in India and would regale me with his tales of life in India, of which he adored. Had he not met my grandmother during leave, he would have settled in India - I grew up loving a country and its culture even though I never visited there. They fell in love, married and were ostracised by both their families. He brought her to London where they settled just off of Marble Arch and where they remained until the mid eighties, having one child - My mother.

I know there is a cornish section to the family also, but through marriage. Over the last few years the Irish ancestry has been traced, we all had a huge family reunion in Belfast - that was something, for sure. It is most odd to meet complete strangers and yet, find very similar mannerisms/quirks in us all. When I walked into the reunion one lady, quite literally, had a heart attack b/c she thought she had just seen the ghost of my grandmother, who died in the 80s - thankfully it was a minor attack.

I have yet to trace my deceased father's family tree.

Most of what I have uncovered I did so using online resources, Aneirin, and many phone calls to registrars, etc...

Scottish/Norwegian here.

Very much in touch with the Scots side.  My grandfather was very into  geneaology (Clan Campbell of Breadlabyne, TYVM).  Lots of Highland games in my youth.
Not somuch info on the Norwegian side.  Up until about 3 years ago, I thought I had been named for my Godfather (my Dad's best man/best friend), only to be presented a framed photo of my Norwegian great-grandmother... who as it turns out I was actually named for,  The photo was given me by my Uncle (dad's bro).

I am Frisian, Viking, Roman and a bit jew. That suffices.

Tracing genealogy makes no sense in christian populations, as some of our ancestors have not been begotten by their purported fathers.

On my dad's side, my Grandma was Scottish (a little, fiery, ginger lady who certainly lived up to the stereotype - a heart of gold though) and ny Grandad was a Durham bloke.

I've traced my Mum's side back to 1740ish, and her family are a mixture of Cornish (I took her down to Cornwall last year to look at a few streets and things that her Great Grandparents lived in), Staffordshire and Durham - 'all mining stock of one form or another......copper, tin, coal etc.

So, all in all, I'm a quarter Jock and three quarters English industrial peasant stock. You've got to be happy with that!

I have an Aunt who has gone to great lengths to track the family back for the purpose of identifying a possible pattern, so that pattern may be broken. The pattern has now been identified, but also a great many other things  have been discovered in the process.

Ancestry in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, perhaps those that also saw what was coming and legged it to start afresh in a brave new world. Interesting in that there is other similar likenesses to me in other countries from what photos I have seen of the new families and similar natural occupations.

The one surprise was there is a lot of Romany in the family, both from far back and not so far back, which does illicit a certain amount of pride.

Odd it is here, a munch goer was initially scared of me, later to be found out it was because she thought I was her brother whom she had not seen for a number of years, the likeness being similar.Enquiring on the surname, there are I am told a branch in the family, so perhaps we are related.

And there was I thinking , I am unique, not sure whether that is a good thing to be or not hahaha.

I grew up in a multicultural household, which was a rarity in the 60s. My nanny, with whom I spent the majority of my time until I reached the age of six, and her family, arrived in England from the West Indies. To me, she was my 'Nana', later additions to the family were from Bahrain and Persia.

The Russian Jew side of the family is a little difficult to fully trace. There is also a well-known celebrity my family and I are certain we are related to and despite attempts at contact, they clearly remain uninterested, which is their right. My father, who was quite the philanderer, ensured I have half siblings in the UK, however, again I will never get to know them (their choice)... Some people simply do not wish to know outside their immediate family.

My ancestors left Spain in 1492 once the Spanish Inquisition started. They moved to Amsterdam and became skilled artisans. In the early 1600's they were invited to help build Eastern Poland after the Tsar gave a large tract of it to General Zamosc. Most of their fellow artisans returned to Amsterdam and western Europe after his death but mine had intermarried with local, unskilled Jews and remained. Grandfather migrated to the U.S. in 1908, the year of greatest immigration. One of his brothers moved to Canada, two other brothers and the one sister moved to the then British Protectorate of Palestine. His mother survived in Warsaw as a single parent by buying tobacco and rolling cigarettes and selling them on the street without paying taxes. Apparently at the time people bought them one at a time.

greetings aneirin,

i know i'm part irish, welsh, scottish, and german. i think i'm part something else, but i have no idea what. i don't even know all of my grandparents' names, let alone all of my great-grandparents' so researching genealogy would not be easy, but i've always thought it would be fun. i do feel a strong connection with the cultures of my ancestry.

respectfully,
annabelle.

I have genological (is this the word?) records spanning back fourteen or fifteen generations in a massive compilation, including stories and articles about some of its members.  The record is not complete and has some parts of it where we're not sure about things.

Personally, I'm not really that interested in it, but some of my family members are.  I guess keep family records is a family tradiation.

I'd make the off-topic comment of an observation when I looked through some of it.. that my family history has had many very different sorts of people it in, that the variety was surprising in respects.
