Is it thought of as acceptible by the general Collar Me community to invite someone to chat if one does not yet know that person? After all, one has to break the ice somehow, and the choices pretty much are e-mail messages or chat. Seeing as how we are typically here to meet people, the mere invitation to chat would seem to be an acceptible overture, but I don't want to step on anyone's toes if there is some other cultural norm for this web site.

I am fairly new as well, but I get the impresssion that sending messages is considered more polite.

You are much better off writing a personal message. It is not rude to try it but is just not effective for logical reasons and from all the junk that women go through when posting a profile. This is not a bar and a Hi, lets chat comes off as lazy or maybe more importantly not remotely distinctive. Now more times then not a women interested in you will just give an IM address but that is life in cyber land and one must leave all judgment and wishful thinking out of it. Generally any messages of just invite to chat, quite short and copy and paste will be totally ignored. You have competition for any woman’s attention and one must accept that and understand what that truly means.

When i'm invited to chat from someone i don't know, um for no particular reason it makes me alittle uncomfortable, and the rare times i've accepted we may as well be from different worlds ... so i just don't. Messages give you a little time to think through the answer, feel your way.

I am amazed at how many requests I get to chat, particularly immediatley after I sign into the site. I am not sure how these boys know, but somehow they latch on instantly. Goddess only knows how many automatically fall by the wayside while I am here at the boards. I am sure there are many more I never even see! I ignore or decline all requests first of all because I state clearly in My profile that I do not chat and secondly because it is obvious that I do not know them, they do not know Me, and they didn't even take the time to do more than glance at a picture and hit a button to request a chat. Gee, wonder what they want! [8\|] Sigh Yes, lazy is a word that comes to My mind. I don't know what the exact protocol might be, or if there is even a protocol, but My best guess would be that it is always in your best interest to at least read a profile before you hit that button. And I also think that if a profile seems to indicate an openness to chatting, here or on another IM system, it would be only polite to introduce yourself first via an email. But please don't send that tired old quickie "Hi, I <insert silly description here> and would love to chat. If interested, <insert one or more chat Id's here>." Boring...

I personally, deny all the chat requests that I get. They slow me down, and people tend to think I am blowing them off because I take time to actually think of what I am going to say. Much easier to just use the mail function, that way, I can take as long as I want to mail back.

~fast reply~ i often get chat invites, and never even bother to look at who is sending it. They can email me, and if i wish to have a quicker way to talk and they seem interesting we move it to IM. i have a hard enough time keeping up with all the threads and emails, much less juggling chatting with a complete stranger on top of that.

it is easier to focus one's attention on one letter at a time than on potentially multiple chats. A sub should be happy to present one's self in a focused fashion, and according to the Dommes to whom i have spoken, it is better not to feel that Their sub is otherwise occupied, such as dealing with multiple open chats. i actually turn off the computer, tv, stereo etc. when i have been talking to a Mistress by telephone. to do less is rude. To delay one's response time on chat seems to give the same distracted impression, real or imagined.

chat requests mess with my computer. i would rather exchange emails for awhile and when and if we decide to take things a step beyond and chat, i will give someone my yahoo id and whenever we have time we can chat there. much easier for both parties usually. PM
