I am glad.  The main reason I use yahoo for e-mail is because it isn't microsoft.

Yahoo's profits may be down, but it's still worth a hell of a lot more than 44 billion bucks. Otherwise they wouldn't have asked for more.

Or, would they?

The suspense continues.

It's still a publically traded company, Microsoft can still purchase controlling shares if they really want yahoo.

I think it is good that M$ has been knocked back. Serve them right for bringing out Vista, I think there are more M$ haters in the world now.

I'm quite sure that MicroSoft anticipated this move and will now be taking it into hostile take over territory.    Yahoo is vulnerable given their recent earnings the price MS has offered.  The only wild card is regulator approval.

Could it be that M$ is now ' old hat', once the market leader, it is now falling behind the newer competition? Why has it not created it's own search engine to rival the market?

Why develop from scratch what can be bought?

On a side note, the search engine aspect is the smallest part of what MS is seeking to buy.    Google dominates the search engine market, but Yahoo dominates everything else with Yahoo mail, Yahoo groups, Yahoo Map, etc, etc.   That is where the big advertising dollars are projected to go in coming years and Yahoo isn't making money off of it right now.  They are plump and ripe for the picking.

Lets just hope the continue to tell M$ to stick it or else screw em for more than they would want to part with.

Hey, just thinking, as it would seem lots of us kinky have yahoo mail and chat, if M$ took control, would that mean a migration?

Microsoft will slowly court Yahoo; there's no rush.  Yahoo knows this, and is holding out.  What they'll get for their holdout?  Who knows.  This isn't about search engines though..... yet.... though in time, whoever controls where you look for data, controls what data you end up seeing.

Type 'Buy Car' into Windows Live Search, and Google, and find out why, and who paid good money to Microsoft, and who paid good money to Google.

I was actually really surprised when I found out recently how bad Yahoo is doing since it seems like every Tom, Dick and Harry has Yahoo as their homepage.

Microsoft is on the run.

I'm a fan (of Microsoft...I'm a hometown boy...we love Boeing, Microsoft, Amazon and Starbucks)...but Msft is on the run....chasing their dream of world conquering....they can garner it with their cash warchest...they can simply buy what they choose to....but....

(And I hate this), they could end up being conquered by their own largesse....by their own hubris.

Yahoo has already made it clear in the press today that they're willing to sell 20% of the company to News Corp (those freindly folks who bought MySpace).

That's not enough to scare Msft...but it is enough to raise the price...by a factor of 4....to 190 billion.

That's a bunch of money.

Msft won't spend 190 billion...but they will spend 100 billion...just to control the game....but....

They won't spend that kind of money without AOL.

Which means that AOL is now in play....for about 3 times what it was selling for 5 days ago.

(Wanna make some money?  Buy AOL).

Isn't this clear evidence of Microsoft's incompetence? They fucked up with MSN, and they fucked up with Live, so now they want to ACQUIRE strategic technologies, which they'll fuck up, as they rip out .php, and *attempt to* replace it with Silverlight?

Which they couldn't. It would setup Google for the win, though.

The next time Bill Gates sends an e-mail through Microsoft’s shiny new Wireless LAN it will be passed through a behind-the-scenes Linux-based network appliance.

Earlier this year Microsoft and Aruba Networks jointly announced the two companies will work to replace Microsoft’s existing Cisco wireless network with Aruba’s centrally-managed infrastructure, which eliminates the need for individual changes on the access points.

Aruba Networks was selected to provide the networking equipment for what is considered to be one of the world’s largest next-generation wireless LANs, serving more than 25,000 simultaneous users a day in some 60 countries. According to an Aruba press statement, Microsoft’s new WLAN will be deployed in 277 buildings covering more than 17 million square feet using Aruba mobility controllers, mobility software and some 5000 wireless access points.

What the press statement didn’t mention is that Aruba mobility controllers run the Linux operating system which Microsoft has aggressively targeted as being inferior to Windows as part of its “Get the Facts” marketing campaign.

Mark Robards, Aruba Network’s Asia-Pacific vice president, said the company’s mobility controller switches provide integrated security, including a firewall, VPN, and hardware encryption, and they are “all Linux-based”.

Isn't this clear evidence of Microsoft's incompetence? (No...it's clearly a sign of their obvious ability to pay top dollar for a known asset).  They fucked up with MSN (yep....this is news?), and they fucked up with Live (see previous), so now they want to ACQUIRE strategic technologies (Yep), which they'll fuck up (probably), as they rip out .php, and *attempt to* replace it with Silverlight?

So?

Which they couldn't. It would setup Google for the win, though.

Well, I guess it just demonstrates the stupidity of the Institutional Investor.

Microsoft is a parasite on the economy.

There's no *real* reason Microsoft should continue in business... They're technology blows... Their tools blow... Their management would be cool if they *did* blow, but instead they just suck. Fisher Price could do a better UI than XP or Vista, and what's under the hood is even a bigger joke.
