you'd think that they'd learn how to speak and enunciate clearly. half the time they mutter so fricken bad you cant understand a word they say.

And secondly the stupid atomosphere creating music usualy just drowns out what's being said. Thank god for subtitles lol.

My other pet peeve in movies is when they have fowl launguage as every second word uttered. I'm not a prude, and I DO cuss, but It just turns me off. There's no point in a would be other wise decent movie to have every other word be a cuss one.

Years ago in the Bay Area there was a segment on one of the morning radio shows, called "What'd he say???"  They would play a clip of a song and callers would call in to guess the lyrics (pre-instant-internet-access).  Creedence Clearwater Revival was featured a lot, as was Tom Petty.

But I hear ya, YHMA, that mumble-jumble in movies is annoying, especially when it's out of nowhere.

Your, there is a technical reason for that.

The sound is put through Dolby processing, and if off the air yet another compression scheme for noie reduction.

What it is really is DBX, in single band, which means that all of the sound is compressed. What that means is before going to the transmitter, the loud sounds are made softer and the soft sounds are made louder. This helps it overcome the noise introduced during the transmission phase. When the signal is recieved, the process is resersed, with the louder sounds being made even louder, and the softer sounds being made even softer.

And if you are talking stereo broadcast TV, which would include most non-digital cable, the audio is also put through a spectral filter. Dolby works on the same idea as DBX but it only affects high frequencies. The spectral compression applied to the NTSC signal is a bit more difficult to decode. With poor engineering and all that, sometimes things just do not come out right.

But that might not be your problem at all. Modern TV sets frequently have all sorts of sound effects, and the first thing for you to do is to go through all the menus and turn all that crap off. BBE, SRS, all of it. In fact is you can actually switch it to MONO, give that a TR

Fixed now.

Anyway, it is not that they are mumbling, it is all the stages of modification the sound is going through. For regular surround sound there are echoes and cross echoes recorded into it. If it is encoded this way and you turn on the old SRS and Dolby surround, it woukld likely sound lie you are listening to it through a thirty foot sewer pipe. Or a vacuum cleaner hose. Something like that.

And now, I'll get political. They like this, they sell you more buttons to push, they do not want you to hear all of the dialogue. If you lose the disk you will buy it again because you want to watch it again. But if you were to watch it on my system, you would hear things you never heard before. Part of the dialogue that were obscured by effect now faithfully reproduced by speaker that came with bigger magnets on the midrange than the woofer. I am serious.

If you were to come, in a movie you might, for the first time, hear a certain line. You might not like it. It happened to me. When I got good enough stuff to really understand the words, not just in movies, but in music as well, I heard alot of things I did not like.

Very haerd to explain where I am at these days, but I simply do not need the music or the sound effects. If I ever do again agree to sit there and watch a story, I want to hear the fucking story. All this extra technology, they can shove it. Make sure it does not get a sunburn.

I only listen to modern "pop type" music when I am forced to, which unfortunetely is too often,. I can scarcely understand one word.
It amazes me to see people actually "singing along" with some to me totally incomprehensible lyric.

I've been known to just make up my own lyrics when I can't figure 'em out.

I have engaged in prolonged debates about what the heck Mick Jagger was singing about.

Back in 1976 I was in a debate about "Killing Me Softly." Was she saying, "Strumming my thing with his fingers"? Someone actually found the (I believe) Frank Sinatra version, and he clearly said, "Strumming my pain with her fingers."

It isn't new.

I love the on-the-fly closed captions. They are like watching those dictation programs on the computer as they "learn" how you pronounce words.

So, what was wrong?  I have to disagree...we have many small groups around here.  They hit all the local bars..sort of revolving forever.  Many of them are so bad, even popular songs you can't understand.  When they talk to you after their show...its the same deal.
There is something to be said for someone who makes money off of their speaking ability to actually be able to speak.
