Maya2001 -> Trying to find the name of this painting or artist (2/13/2008 10:42:57 PM)

A few years back I downloaded an image of a painting of Cleopatra being presented with a slave ... I am hoping to obtain a print of it but I have no idea of the title of the painting or who the artist is...  was wondering if anyone here might know. possibly it is an old postcard

I downloaded last month a package from the internet called "slave - harem pictures". This one and more were inside.
I will look if I still have it and see if the name of the painter is mentioned somewhere.

Aneirin -> RE: Trying to find the name of this painting or artist (2/14/2008 3:00:36 AM)

A french artist I believe, though the name eludes me at the moment. He has done many depicting slaves, particularly middle eastern slaves, very detailed and evidential of travel within those parts.

I did a photomontage for someone based on this artist's art, so came across the rest of his delights. I will have to have a ferret through my archives for the name.

Aneirin -> RE: Trying to find the name of this painting or artist (2/14/2008 3:27:18 AM)

I think I have found the artist,

Jean- Leon Gerome.   (Use Google Image search, there are pages of his art)

If it is not the artist you seek, have a look at his work, it is very similar and so, similarly pleasing.

Do you KNOW it's Cleopatra? That can help in a search.

Went thru a few sites listing his work searching could not find this particular one ,  his work is similiar

the reason I am looking for this particular painting, is that will tie in with greyhound collection, that I already have, I run a business out of my home making collars and coats for greyhounds and will sometimes have clients come to my home along with their dogs, I can easily display such a print, without anyone suspecting any other significance other than it being part of my greyhound collection (tapestries, needle points, prints, plates, figurines ) .

If my memory serves me right this item was sold on ebay and was listed saying it was Cleopatra   , I am not positive that it is.   I have tried searching  for since and have been unsucessful ...so I thought I would  throw it up here to see if anyone could help me find  out more about.  I have tried to enlarge the image to see if I can get a signature  but get too much distortion.    Hopefully Justme696 will be able to provide some info on

It may be Cleopatra and Caesar (Cléopâtre et César) (1866). Oil on canvas. Painted by Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904) but since the original is lost and only copies remain, I am not sure. That one was where she was presented to Caesar in chains.

Wait...why would Cleopatra have been presented to Caesar in chains?  That doesn't make any sense, if I recall my History correctly.

Thanks all finally found it .... it is titled New slave in Harem   by

BlackPhx -> RE: Trying to find the name of this painting or artist (2/14/2008 6:26:41 PM)

There were actually a couple of Queens by the name of Cleopatra, as to why presented as a slave, she was supposed to have had herself delivered to Caesar rolled up in a rug, and Augustus would have had her in chains on his triumphant march into Egypt. But who knows why Artists paint scenes the way they do.

How did you find the title? [:D]

MsBearlee -> RE: Trying to find the name of this painting or artist (2/14/2008 7:20:49 PM)

I would guess she found it because some suggested it 'might' not be Cleo, and because she agreed with another very astute poster (Aneirin) that the artist could be
Jean- Leon Gerome.  Aneirin could just know his art, or he could have perved a bunch of IMAGES on Yahoo (like I tried to do at the OP)...

Once he determined the author, and that it may not be Cleopatra...it's a fairly easy search after that, no?

Ain't computers, wonnerful?  Especially that 'Images' part of Yahoo!    LOL

In any case, this is not a woman being presented WITH  a slave. You misstyped there.

HalfShyHalfWild -> RE: Trying to find the name of this painting or artist (2/14/2008 9:06:50 PM)

Curious as to how this is known from the picture alone. Considering the time then, I'd imagine that was a slave indeed. Just not a female slave already in service.

Well not really since it was not Gerome's work,   so not that easy .... while digging around I found a site that has a large list of artists with quite a number of each ones paintings, I just kept plugging away going through the main artist list till I checked every page ..... then went thru  all the art styles  and the couple humdred pages there, then decide to go to the top of the page about chinese oil reproductions and just as I was nearing the end of the listings .....BINGO  I found it..... only spent about 4 hours on that site  [:o] never mind all the museum sites I kept looking  under  Jean- Leon Gerome earlier and starting looking at other artists as well  for it  ... all totaled this round of searching spent about 8 hours  ... now all that is left is to track down a print

Looking at the picture from an art history point of view, I highly doubt it is.

You are recalling it correctly. She took her life before she was ever put in chains. Such an image would make no sense historically. Not to mention... Caesar was her lover. Octavius was the one who conquered.

true true...but artists have been known to take license.
