The economy was actually much worse under Carter. You couldnt buy a mortgage with an interest rate that wasnt in double digits. Gas would be equivalent to $6 a gallon today. Inflation and unemployment were rising. Carter made many, many mistakes. The GOP could have ran a rag doll in 1980 and still won. Carter's economic policy was an absolute disaster.

You are forgetting, the 1973 oil crisis was still being felt when Carter became President, the economies of most of the western world were suffering. It was an international economic crisis going on, not an American one.

The Arab oil embargo of 1973 pushed up the oil prices and there was a silver lining, the higher prices meant that oil in regions other than the Arabian Gulf were becoming economic to exploit.

EDIT The Brits will remember this. Thatcher got elected in 1979 with a slogan Labour Isn't Working (there was high unemployment all over Europe by the way) because more than a million people were unemployed. She then fucked the economy up even more until an official 3.5 million people were unemployed and an unofficial 5 million were unemployed (She changed the way the stats were collected 21 times). She then blamed the world economy (with the help of her friends in the press) as well as the unions but comparable countries like Germany and France etc never had so many unemployed but she got away with it. In any thinking country she would have lost the next election but Brits don't think when it comes to politics, they are like Americans seem to be, tribal.

The media invented the sub prime mortgage scam and the burst real estate bubble it caused? You've got to really love the GOP playbook:

1) Blame the 'liberal' media for everything
2) Equate Democrats with communists
3) Be afraid, be very afraid
4) Reagan!!!!!!!

*chuckles*

Bingo.. that is it in a nutshell.. have they dug his dead ass up yet...

Oh shit.. I just thought of something! Gods.. I hope they dont think of it..

"The Duke" is on ice right.... what if they figure that out.. and bring him back? one cow boy is as good as another right? ( was was a better actor anyways.. )

I think Rove has a point.  People were thinking the economy was bad even when it was good, and now being constantly told we're heading into a recession...even when the jury is still out on that...it only makes things worse.

Actually, the interest rate peaked during the Reagan (genuflect here) administration.  Ah, for the good ol' days of Reagan....when he excoriated Carter for a 500 billion national debt.  Brings a tear to my eye.

Of course we could simply censor all the news outlets and then those who are sleeping in their car or under a bridge will think it is only them and reach down and pull themselves up by their boot straps while wiping their ass with their copy of "Horatio Alger" since they cannot afford toilet paper.

Considering people are coming to believe that 5% unemployment is some sort of economic crisis, I'd say Rove has a point, O59.  The media certainly isn't providing any comparisons to the double digit unemployment and inflation we had during the Carter Administration.

Love your new forum ranking, Ron.

I am looking for the link, but if memory serves the Carter administration redefined the criteria which one could be considered unemployed, in order to provide benefits to more people who had lost their jobs and were having trouble finding new jobs in an economy rendered sluggish (unless you were one of the poor, hard-done-by aerospace contractors) by his predecessor, and all the Carter-blame cheerleading squad remembers is that what was 5% was now 9% unemployment under the Carter administration.

I will post it when I find it.

Oh there you are, Sinergy.  I was beginning to wonder.  Please do post something to cover the 14-17% interest rates people were paying on their home loans as well.

Let me take that one, Sinergy.

In them days, I made 16.48 an hour, and I could get a fucking loan anywhere in the world on my signature.

When Reagan took office, I lost my job and fell off the unemployment rolls in time and got offers for a 12-16% interest rate and they would sniff up your very asshole to insure you would repay it and then some, and guess what?  Couldn't get a job, and couldnt buy a fucking job and I as a wage earner was alotta fucking better off 4 years before reagan took office than I ever was since.

So don't wave that stupid shit in anyones face that was alive and had to be a breadwinner, Rich, you might get these young americans to belive in this shit, but not people who pay taxes, don't fight wars, and want a swingset for their kids.

nope

I will do that.

Please do the boards a favor describing why we are entering a period of record foreclosures and a complete stagnant housing market when the prime lending rate is the lowest it has been in decades.

Good luck in your research.

I stopped listening to Rove after I heard him make this comment live on NPR......

As if Karl Rove is suddenly determines the rules of mathematics when it comes to counting votes.   This guy is so full of bull shit that I'm amazed the conservatives are ignorant enough to listen to him.    He is a gifted lier, a VERY gifted one and that's why the conservatives embrace him.

REAGAN!!!   (Sorry.  Couldn't help myself.  I want to see if I can get that little '2' to start flashing at the temple of your avatar when I say his name.)

Now I'm pretty sure we can rely on the media to cover this in great depth once a Dem is back in the White House and the economy is in the toilet, but lets get a little ahead of the curve.  Presidents are not magic (the Obama fans will be better off when they figure this out).  They have to start from where we are.  Yes.  Some of the worst of the Carter era recession came down after Reagan took office in 1981.  Look at the full impact of his term though.  Look at the debt as a percentage of the total economy.  Consider that the Cold War was over (and I've got this one, Sinergy; "but that would have happened all by itself") and factor how much that was worth.

Reagan inherited deep shit and brought us out with a change of direction.  Whoever is next will inherit deep shit too.  Their change of direction to try and get back on track will probably hurt a lot of people in the process as well.  Trust me, you'll be thoroughly informed on this in a year or so.

Not much research required, Sinergy.  Stupid people were allowed to make loans to even stupider people.  Depending on location, location, location, the current climate to buy ranges from very good to 'not just yet.  And the folks in worst shape signed on to ARMs that turned a lot higher than prime.

Our current President will soon be an ex-president.  To paraphrase Hunter Thompson just a hair, "to the current one owes respect, to the ex, one owes only the truth."  Monkeyboy isn't the phrase I would choose for the final critique... might have to ponder it a bit.  I'll not be defending his domestic policies.

OK you win, I lose take off your pants and bend over.  The economy, was not in the toilet before Reagan, Bush et al took over.  LOL, lets just waltz thru that bullshit here a little, Carter.............mmmmmmmmmmmmm (as if that is an island in the storm and we should start the history there) Remember the fucking slime called Nixon who took us off the gold standard? A tick on the clock. Remember when that fuckwad said in his vice presidency that 'We are all Keneysians now!'

Ok, but lets let that wash.  Then Carter, deficit.......then reagan, deficitamundo, then bush......thousand points of light, deficit........then Billy J........surplus and got his dick sucked, but jacks your morales up in a way you cant hang with.......go to jesus, and export the truth to the world, deficit that will be visited on the 7th generation.

But now, as I understand it, the economy is going to go in the toilet.....

Well, where the fuck is it now?

John Kennedy said-- The stock market is going up, but we only get credit when it is going down.

This bullshit, republicans and gonna wanna work together, oh, they lost the right to be a majority, but they want to move this country forward, and walk the fuck out the goddamn door because they lost a vote?  show me examples of when democrats did that........

dont take a high road when you are weaseling..........it just aint proper

Let us remember that Rove current job is to make his buddy Bush look good.  Saddly he not having much luck.  He was to lecture at a University recently however the students made such an uproar he was canceled.  The Head of the Federal Reserve also is warning that our economy is in trouble.
It appears that both this President Bush and his father the other President Bush have little understanding about economics.  The previous President Bush kept telling everyone that the economy only need a little confidence, while unemployment and inflation continued to grow.  His own advisors on the ecomony stated publicly that in the last months of President Bush Senior adminstration the ecomony grinded to a halt.

I agree the cold war ended.  It ended because the Soviet Union went bankrupt from engaging in stupid and unwinnable wars in places like Afghanistan, while not shoring up it's infrastructure because it was too busy mollycoddling arms manufacturers.

On the one hand you blame Carter for everything, on the other hand you claim that Presidents cannot really do much.

Which is it?

Reagan changed direction the way the Dipshit in Chief did.  He borrowed money, instituted procedures for running aerospace and other contracts (cost plus) which made his cronies rich, instituted boondoggle projects (missile defense shield) which will never work, but suck billions of dollars a year away to pay corporate welfare, and looked the other way while the economy was gutted by corporate interests.

So you got a nice ride on the union bubble, and then it burst.  What's the difference between you and the aerospace worker who never had it so good as in 1985?  Or the dot com investor who came in his pants every single morning in the late 90's?  Or even the guy who was raking in the "equity" in his house on constant re-fi's a couple years back?

My bubble ride was courtesy of some damn stupid policies that were bankrupting my state.  It was nice while it lasted, but my checks dropped 55% overnight.  I do something else now, but I never had it so good as under Gray Davis.

         We ain't special.

Stupid people making loans goes all the way to the top with the Dipshit In Chief cutting interest rates to stimulate home purchases.

I dont really care what words are used to describe the "current climate."  Nobody is buying property, and vast numbers of people are being foreclosed on to the point where the Federal Government has to borrow money to bail them out.

There is a correlation between people having jobs (in other words, their job was not offshored to India), people being paid X amount of money (in other words, people not taking a job at Wal-mart or some other McJob), and people being able and willing to afford to pay Y dollars (at vastly inflated amounts for the value of that house) for a house.

Stalling foreclosures doesn't seem like the right course to me.  It would be better in the long run, JIMHO, for the lenders to be penalized for allowing the homes to sit vacant and fall into disrepair.  That will encourage them to both work with homeowners who can still save the house, and help prevent the neighborhood blight of abandoned properties.
