It might as well be a lifestyle article.

Feb. 14, 2008 -- The CDC today warned parents, teachers, and health care providers about the so-called choking game, which has killed at least 82 U.S. youths since 1995. "The choking game involves intentionally trying to choke oneself or someone else with one's hand or a noose to attain a brief euphoric state or high. If the strangulation is prolonged, which is something that can happen very quickly, death or a serious injury can result," explains Robin Toblin, PhD, MPH, of the CDC's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. The CDC found 82 media reports of choking-game deaths in the U.S. from 1995 to 2007. The kids who died were 13 years old, on average, and 87% were boys. Nearly all of their parents weren't aware of the choking game before their child died. Warning Signs of the Choking Game The CDC urges parents, teachers, and health care workers to learn the possible warning signs of the choking game:
  • Discussion of the game, including other names for it, such as "pass-out game" or "space monkey"
  • Bloodshot eyes
  • Marks on the neck
  • Severe headaches
  • Disorientation after spending time alone
  • Ropes, scarves, and belts tied to bedroom furniture or doorknobs or found knotted on the floor
  • The unexplained presence of dog leashes, choke collars, and bungee cords. "If parents believe their child is playing the choking game, they should speak to them about the life-threatening dangers associated with the game and seek additional help if necessary," Toblin said at a news conference. Rise in Choking Game Deaths "Three or fewer choking game-related deaths per year were reported in the news media from 1995-2004," says Toblin. "However, there was a jump to 22 reports of deaths in 2005 and 30 reports in 2006. In 2007 there was a sharp decrease, with nine deaths occurring in the first 10 months." It's not clear if choking game deaths are down or if they're getting less media coverage. The choking game isn't new. "What is new now is that children are playing alone and that they're using ligatures [nooses]," says Toblin. She notes that kids appear to be learning the choking game from each other and that the CDC doesn't expect its report -- and publicity about the report -- to increase children's choking-game deaths. Deaths weren't included in the study if they were linked to autoerotic asphyxiation, which the CDC defines as a practice of choking oneself during sexual stimulation. Deaths also weren't included in the study if it wasn't clear whether the child was trying to commit suicide. Youth suicides by hanging or suffocation tend to peak at age 19, whereas choking-game deaths peak at 13, "so these really seem to be different phenomenon," says Toblin. The CDC relied on media reports for the study because choking-game deaths aren't noted on death certificates. The findings appear in the Feb. 15 edition of the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

I saw a similar thing in our paper.

Apparently mainstream media has never heard of autoerotica asphyxiation before.

I think a lot of these offspring need to have more chores, more homework, and more information and then maybe they wouldn't feel the need to try such things out. Oh, wait, adults do it, too, so why are we surprised when teens do it?

    Future rush junkies.
This isn't anything new.  When I was about that age we were doing shotguns and doing that to each other while holding the hit.  We didn't use any implements however.  Just hands, and let go as soon as the person started to fade.
I know, we were nuts.  But, man, what a buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
    Still am!!

Yep we did it too, not the same thing but similar thing where one would bend over, head through legs, and then stand back up, over and over until dizzy and light headed from hyper ventilating then somone would hold you around your mid section and you would pass out....i've been hearing of kids doing this again for the past few years, they were calling it something different than the names mentioned in the article, but was accounting for deaths just the same.

It is breath play plain and simple.  To me it only tells me that people are bored with the same old stuff..and finding other ways to amuse themselves.
More lifestylers being born every minute.

Of course it would be nice if they lived long enough.  Someone could somehow teach them safely on a large scale.

When in the right environment it is but when kids can't realize that they aren't doing it right it's dangerous. Personally i think that a lot of things kids my age do to get high or rush are ridiculous because they don't realize everything that goes into it like ghost riding and such.

Some one needs to give them a mentor...

People actually get into the lifestyle because of boredom?  That sounds so strange to me.

i'm 18, and in a lot of people's eyes i am still a child and i will admit i act like it sometimes i'm still figuring a lot of things out and i don't know everything. i don't see myself as an adult per say but a young adult i guess. i used kids because of the way some people in my age group handle and think about things.
But the way some people my age do are...absurd, things like binge drinking, playing that choking game, and alot of other things i hear because some don't seem to get the repercussions and if they do they don't think it will happen to them and it's a shame. Does that clarify? If i offended i'm sorry it's just a lot of things irritate me about the things my age group does for kicks and jollies.

DARWIN's theory's on evolution while explaining much in human development,i don't believe was intended to explain away carelessness and needless deaths.

You didn't offend me.  I was just wondering how old you really were when you said "kids my age" as the article in the OP was referring to 13 y/o.

But, at your age, I would think you should be out chasing girls, or playing ball, or doing something!!  Getting some real life experience under your belt.  But, that's just me.

How can you explain evaluation with out  explaing carelessness and needless deaths?  Through out history the smart and strong genes, for the most part were passed on while people who do stupid things were slowly eliminated out  of the gene pool.  The sad part is we are changing Darwin's theory by put labels like "do not use this hair dryer in water"  or my favorite on my washing machine "do not use gasoline to wash clothes"  The fact either warning is there mean someone has done that then sued the manufacture and won a large sum of money.  Frankly people like that should not reproduce and they cost me money!  Had the same laws been in effect 200 years ago most modern inventions would not have been made. I don't wish anyone ill will but should some one who uses gasoline in a washing machine really be pitied?

I almost got kicked out of school for playing that game when I was 12.
Proof every generation's just as quick on the uptake as the last.

Funny coincidence - my best friend was talking about how he and his friends used to "make each other pass out" over 20 years ago by choking each other. They stopped after he passed out, fell down on the floor and started seizing. I scolded him, saying how stupid he was when he was a kid. This is a way for kids to get "high" - it's not quite asphyxiation/breath play/etc.

    What I'm thinking is this:

Is it really THAT hard to get a dimebag these days?
