I’m looking to buy my first flogger..
I want something, that is good for a “beginner” .. But not something I’m going to grow out of to fast..   Something with a bit of “sting” to it…     So can ya point me in the direction of what type of material and style is good for that?     Thanks,   Tom

Deerhide = soft
Cowhide = medium
Bullhide = heavy
Rubber = stingy
Chain = deadly

There's flat, round, knoted, braided and beaded tails.  Short tails, Long tails, medium tails.  Thin tails, thick tails.  Black, blue, red and green tails...  See where I'm going with this?

The best way is to go shopping and find what suits you.

Not to mention how it feels in your hand, where the balance point is, length of tails and handle, etc.

If you don't have a local shop, ask others in the community if you can try theirs out to get a feel for what you like.

Do not skimp on quality  for the sake of price point .Pay the extra bucks for the better crafts people out there  so you buy the item once not buy it  use it  break it replace it and repeat .Ask the people if they stand behind the product . What i mean by stand by it if it falls apart from miss use too bad  but from poor quality  or workmanship  will they fix or replace it .
Hotch put up a good gauge there too , but also take into account of the  number of falls , the end cut ,tightness of the weave ,length of falls  as well as the material  used .

When we were looking we checked out a club that had a vendor section.  We were able to find a high quality shop and test out a few in order to find the kind we would like.

One thing I do like about S&M, is the fact that many impliments are finely crafted works of art, not cheap Chinese imports.  On the other hand, you can always unlay some rope and make a cat'o nine tails like an old salt.

All that said, if you are a true newbie, get deerskin.  It's soft and you won't kill yourself as you are learning from whapping your owns.  You'll also be using it always as a warm-up flogger so it's a good investment.

I also need to echo the sentiments of DON'T SKIMP ON QUALITY for the sake of price.

The way the lengths are cut matters a fair bit. I'd say go to a quality shop where you can take a whack or two on yourself with them to understand what they'll feel like. 'Stingy' is more surface sensation, which I was always told is the best place to start, and work into 'thuddy' the deeper muscular impacting blows.
Of course the first flogger I was handed to practice with was a heavy moosehide with 18" diamond cut tails.
I don't suggest starting there!

I would suggest something thuddy; perhaps elkskin with lots of long falls.  Were you to choose something like one I have, made of some sort of rubber floor-matting, you might hurt somebody.  I'd avoid chain for your first flogger.

...she says drolly.

well i sell the chain floggers  in my line up , they do exist though not  a big heavy chain like  i used to carry way back when to lock my bike  up at school , rather key chain ball connector types .They can also double as sensation play items  used in hot or cold , and texture also can be electrified with a violet wands body contact probe or pad .
Hotch > i have seen  the cheap made in china floggers , they are  better than a Halloween prop or what spencers has  but thats  about it  and just slightly above that . I know a new person could be fooled easy by those, thinking they are getting a deal and just not know what they are  looking at or looking for  as far as a good or even better quality  item .I would also suggest buying from people who are in bdsm  using the items and ask fro references  or referrals  from others , you see someone  nice flogger ask where it was acquired .

Not quite the chain I first imagined, but that still has to hurt. Leave a mark! May I ask just when the big day will be? It would be great to please you for your birthday. I used to tell former vanilla girl friends on their birthdays, I would be their slave for the day. None ever really picked up on it though.

awwwwwwww, liks2, I keep telling you EVERYTHING is relative!  It would only hurt if I wanted it to hurt.  It would only leave a mark if I intended it leave a mark.

I was teasing about my birthday...it's not till the middle of July.  <smiles>  But, you keep saying things like that and yet you stay out of Colorado.  What is a woman to think?

Of course, as soon as you get a flogger, next you'll need to get a cross.  And then you need to explain to roommates and parents what it's doing in your living room and then pretty much all of your disposable income is going for toys ....

LOL   While it's true about my extra money...I just put eye-bolts in the ceiling; any one of which can support a large man's full body weight.  <WEG>

I have been planning a trip to Colorado, but home repairs keep getting in the way. Just spent $600 on the furnace. But hopefully towards the end of the month. Eye-bolts! I would rather be kneeling, but I guess it is not my decision. Poor slaves!

Kneeling!  Once you said, to your dissappointment, you can't kneel much anymore; then you implied you couldn't kneel for a moment (to offer a Lady a cup of tea) and now you say you'd rather kneel than...what?

I don't actually hang men, ya know...it's just how strong the eyebolts are.  I like a man to keep his feet firmly planted on the ground.

Anyway, I'm thinking you're just a big tease.  Still, don't come to Colorado to serve me...we'd have to 'do lunch' first.  Yeah, I'm that cautious..........well, and picky.  LOL

I might be wrong, but I thought I said I can't kneel as long as I used to. I thought I remarked that kneeling to serve you tea would be one of the desirable things. I have been trying to get away, but about eleven hundred dollars for emergency home repairs has hampered a little. Plus your damn Colorado mountains have not been very cooperative with all that snow. We have had one storm after another here too. Who is shoveling all that snow for you? It is good to be cautious, I would not want to rush into anything to quickly either.
