I'm looking to buy my first pair of quality bondage wrist cuffs. Except I have no idea what exactly mars quality. I was thinking comfortable and leather but don't have a clue beyond that. I don't want t do suspension or anything. . .

Does anyone have suggestions for criteria? Can anyone recommend and online store? And if the sizing is off, how would I fix that? I'd think a leather punch but where on earth do I get one of those. . . ?

Help and advise is muchly appreciated.

I wish I could direct you better than saying that the ones that my Master uses are leather and have a fur lining.  I really like the lining.
As for web-sites there are so many to choose from - one of my favs is:
http://www.adulttoychest.com/default.aspx
http://www.bdsmtoybox.com/index.asp
and
http://www.xandria.com/
I hope this helps - I'm new to this too so this is what I have to offer.

I like two types, depending on what we're doing.  Medical restraints are functional, secure and comfortable, but not very flashy.  When something a little more ominous is required, I prefer to ue my own.  I make 'em out of wool lined heavy leather with straping, 2 or 3 buckles, heavy "D" rings and rivets all assemble with a nice saddle stitching.  They're a  little more work to get on, but they make a statement about things to come.

alot depends on what exactly you want to use them for.
for looks alone most any pair would work.
if you want looks and very strong cuffs that will not break check out http://www.water-hole.com/Shopping/xcart/product.php?productid=16134&cat=268&page=1

I'm kind of in the same boat in that I'm looking for my first good pair of leather cuffs, but more so I'm looking for a good source that is decently and not overly priced.  I hesitate to  buy on Ebay, and from some of the local stores up here in NJ...you have to wait for 0% financing and a good APR.  I also want to start with good ankle and some suspension gear as well.  But so far, I'm not sure who to invest with on good leather gear.  If anyone has any ideas or sites...I would very much appreciate it.

Here's a little safety tip for 'ya.

Normal black leather cuffs that are secured with a buckle can be escaped without too much trouble. Give it a try and with a bit of practice you'll be able to unbuckle the buckle with your fingernails and slip out of them should you need to.

But if you want that sweet feeling of total loss of control, go with the leather restraints that include a little metal loop for a small lock. When those locks are in place, you're truly secure.

Depends on your fantasy.

And if you have any weakness or clumsiness of digital dexterity (I deal with the residuum of a stroke in my dominant hand, and some resultant carpal tunnel effects in both hands)...those beastly little locks may take you as long to fasten or unfasten as the whole process of setting up the rest of the scene. If you plan for it, fine. If you're unexpectedly dealing with it, not so good. Was loaned a subbie for a scene recently, and his own cuffs with him. But they were locked like that, and when one proved too tight *after* he was secured in place, it was my undexterous and understrength fingers getting that wrist undone to loosen the cuff one notch.

Fortunately, the rest of the scene went well.

As for getting cuffs that fit you, there are site where you can get them custom-sized for about the same price or a little less -- or use velcro (has the advantage of fitting perfectly AND being easy to get on and off). Yes, i realize the velcro doesn't quite have the street cred of buckles and locks but i quite like mine. :D

Orrrrr... !

I got my first pair of cuffs from Torvea Toys. They are leather, fur-lined, have locking buckles, AND have velcro. I have very small wrists and the 10" cuffs work well for me. The velcro helps make sure they're on tight and you can't slip out as easily.

Also, if you get cuffs that are too big for you, try wearing terry cloth wristbands underneath them. A Dom I played with did that once because his cuffs were a tad too large for me. You might be able to find leather punches at craft stores, but I can't say for sure.

Edited: Eeep, the link was too long for the page!

we love the cuffs from Leather by Danny... http://www.gripcuffs.com/

He uses soft leather in all the areas that contact skin and has rolled and sewn edges which are less likely to cut than some of the skived edges I've seen on other cuffs. The hardware is all top quality and the eyelets on the straps make them very easy to find...even in the dim light of the dungeon.

If you are in the UK, or ordering from the UK, I second this. Nothing else comes anywhere close to top-to-bottom-leathers on this side of the Atlantic.

I have grip cuffs from Leather By Danny.  It's nice to have something to hold onto while restrained.  The handles can be removed as well.  These are not suspension cuffs.  Here's the website: http://www.gripcuffs.com/homeall.htm
Happy Bondage :)

i make buckling cuffs in three size and sell them on my site:  http://www.cometsoftware.com/she/leather_catalog_cuffs_buckling.htm

There are several things to consider about cuffs.  Some people like cuffs that are comfortable and can be worn a long time.  Others (those darn sadistic dominants) like cuffs that are part of the pain in the scene.  Some like having a lining to help with comfort, some have said that lining can be a stinky maintenance concern.  Velcro (regardless of the other materials used) can be helpful in having a snug fit, and, it can also help prevent twisting, which is a concern for wrist cuffs when the victim is attached to a cross.  Some people like a really pretty looking cuff and are willing to pay extra for extra workmanship, while others simply want something basic that will do the job for a long time.  Some restrainees try to take off the cuffs, making locks and other features more important.

Latigo has been a long time standard for BDSM gear because of it's strength, durability, and, resistance to bodily fluids and lubricants.  Lesser quality and fake leather is generally thinner.  Some leather gear has the pieces stamped (cut) by a machine, while others cut the leather by hand and bevel the edges for comfort and durability.  Some hardware and workmanship (stitching, rivets, etc.) is used for durability and functionality, for some it is a way to show off their workmanship, and, for others they use the cheapest quality they can find to simply sell the product.

Look for web sites that provide quality pictures and explanations of the materials they use, sizing and functionality of the products, and, details of the workmanship.  Most sites are "mom and pop" operations that are part-time ventures for people in the lifestyle.  Some are doing it simply to make money off the lifestyle, some are doing it to make money to pay for their other toys, while the larger sites are simply a for-profit business.  The best "business people" are those the strive for repeat and referral business.

As far as good cuffs go, marks of quality are that the leather is consistent.  That is, the leather is of even thickness, no cuts, wrinkles or brands.  Edges should have a little beveling as to round out the edge, because a square edge can be irritating.  Stiching should be even and tight and any knots tight w/ little excess.  Rivets should be tight and flush all the way around without cutting into the leather, nor should they have "mushrooming", which is different from a dome.  Domed is fine if the rivet is tight.  All other hardware like D and O rings should be secure and not bent, preferably welded.

With all that said, I reccomend www.sub-shop.com for cuffs, collars, harnesses and all sorts of gaggage.

If you want handcuffs/ legirons, get back to me and I can help out much further there.

I just posted a letter in one other letter about this and i say go to a saddle and tack shop. they have heavy duty gear made for horses so you know they can take a lot of abuse with out wearing out . and they can be had at much lower prices than your going to find at a sex shop. look up horse hobblers for cuffs and bridles for collars with just a little work they can be made into just what your looking for .you can get a leather punch kit to refit the straps at any craft store for just a few dollars

Tack shops may also sell leather punches, if not see if there's a farm store around such as Agway or Tractor Supply. Or look up saddlers in the Yellow Pages. They shouldn't charge much to just punch a hole. Otherwise buy an awl at the hardware store and just keep twisting it, eventually you'll have a new hole.
