I should be allowed to sell my vote if I feel like it...

No, the rich shouldn't be allowed a greater voice than the poor just because they are rich.

Next question?[:D]

Because I can.

Take that as you will...

Politicians spend millions to get elected. Don't kid yourself into thinking that your vote isn't a commodity up for grabs. Not only that, but it's bought with both hard and soft sells. You're told what you want to hear.. so ya buy it and the price is your vote. Whether you are for or against being in Iraq, universal health care, school vouchers.. you name it, someone is on one side trying to sell you a bill of goods and there is a polar opposite trying to sell you 'that' bill of goods. When you pull that lever, you've dropped your two cents in the bucket .. vote sold to the highest bidder (the one who, hopefully, meshes closest with your own ideals) and that almost always comes with some sort of compromise.

Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is all about perspective, but I don't think it can be denied as a reality.

What I find more insidious in truth is the role of lobby groups working on behalf of large corporations to protect their profits.

I know it's not the true reality of the situation but I've always liked the idea that one person has one vote and just as much say as any other person. Why should a rich person who wants to expand his property boundary be able to buy votes from people in the same constituency but far away from the people affected so that he can effectively buy planning permission approval and tread all over the rights of the local people being affected that now have less votes and less say in what happens to their community than the corporate owner.

If you think it is a good idea to be able to sell your vote then just consider that someone in your voting block can sell their vote away to someone that doesn't care about your future community too. I'm moving to a different area next year but before I go I'll sell my vote so that a nuclear plant can be built in the place I used to live. Yeah great idea that.
