Looks like another format bites the dust... Opinions?

I've heard the smart set are actually using hd-dvd's as beer mats.  They still leave rings sometimes but the detail is breath-taking.

I would much rather we have one standard worldwide - but at the same time strict regulation so that we dont get unassailable monopolies dominating the market (yes Mr Gates, I'm looking at you!).

Everyone gets ticked off with Mr Gates I think - but I maintain that what Microsoft did in providing a worldwide common platform was great; the problems with it arise really from the monopoly thereby created - the poor writing of software (because they didnt have to compete) and the power over the market. Control this aspect and single systems are a benefit to all.

The biggest shame of this process though must be the loss of the Phillips video player model back in the 80s; far superior to both VHS and Betamax.

Blu-ray is interim technology. Films will be downloadable to your tv in less than five years. Hence the writers strike.
