More than 180,000 worldwide have joined an online protest claiming the images, shown on European-language pages and taken from Persian and Ottoman miniatures dating from the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries, are offensive to Islam, which prohibits any representation of Muhammad. But the defiant editors of the encyclopaedia insist they will not bow to pressure and say anyone objecting to the controversial images can simply adjust their computers so they do not have to look at them.

Good for them, it's time everyone stood up to these 16th century bullies.

The start of censorship through religion is at hand I see. Soon no one will know what a Jedi looks like either.

LadyEllen -> RE: Wikipedia flips Muslims the bird (2/17/2008 10:01:14 AM)

Oh no! This is so wrong ,wrong, wrong! Of course they must delete these images - and whilst theyre at it anything there which might suggest that evolution and anything else which blaspheme against Christianity must also be removed.

Including any mention of Islam being a valid religion

Images of Muhammad are available in bazaars throughout the Muslim world.

Then as a gesture of unanimity and friendship with Muslims, I suggest we nuke the Muslim world, to prevent such vile and atrocious crimes being committed against Islam.

Aww.  Wikipedia's not bowing to religious censorship?  How horrible.

Personally, I'm still pissed off at their article on evolution.  As a Catholic man, I demand it be removed.  Ditto for any Physics article involving gravity, which happens to be most of them.

PS-  Have you seen the religion article on Wiki?  The "Criticism" section at the end is shocking short, and it doesn't give an objective view to the entire subject.  So I guess there is a bit of censership going on.

There are FIVE LINKS to other Wiki pages at the start of the section under "Main articles: Criticism of Religion, Antireligion, Secularism, Agnosticism, and Atheism"

And SIX archived pages of discussion.

Sounds to me like the subject is well enough discussed.

But the real crux of this is the suckers who fall for the "You have a right to not be offended" scam.

As I understand, the prophet muhammed was a man, the thought is by banning any reference to such a venerable figure being a man, they hope to create a myth, elevate a human being to a god like existance.

The trouble with man, we are not perfect, no one is or has been. Maybe they see the perfection and want to disregard the not not so perfect bits, or the fact that their prophet was a man like them.

Good for Wiki, no encyclopedia should be censored or any other written work for that matter.

Not true

We are only not perfect in relation to others....but as long as we live and think we are perfect onto ourselves. At least at any one thought and action.

I see another Family Guy/South Park episode about Muhammad in our future.

CuriousLord -> RE: Wikipedia flips Muslims the bird (2/17/2008 1:27:20 PM)

You're right!  I just skimmed over the "Religion" article, not reading through it.  There is an entirely seperate article devoted to just criticism.  Awesome.  :D

I found a new favorte quote, too:

I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.
-Stephen F. Roberts

Man, I feel better already.

luckydog1 -> RE: Wikipedia flips Muslims the bird (2/17/2008 1:44:50 PM)

No Anerin, you have that pretty much backwards.  Islam is very clear that it is not Worship of Muhamed.  It is worship of The God, which in Arabic is Al lah.  He is very revered and given respect as a prohpet.  Some modern extreme Muslims take the "Thou Shalt not make Graven Images" commandment very seriuosly.  And pictures of Mohamed, are offensive because it is a direct sin (ten comandments), and it can blur the faith allowing people to think they do worship Mohamed (sort of as you said), which is heresy, disrespect for the Phrophet, and a violation of several comandments.  Which angers a lot of people.

The Catholic Church has a far more subtle approach to evolution than its Evangelical Xstian counterparts. It doesn't reject the theory that species evolved over hundreds of millions of years. Rather, it argues that evolution itself is a product of God's grand design.

quote:

Concerning biological evolution, the Church does not have an official position on whether various life forms developed over the course of time. However, it says that, if they did develop, then they did so under the impetus and guidance of God, and their ultimate creation must be ascribed to him.

Concerning human evolution, the Church has a more definite teaching. It allows for the possibility that man’s body developed from previous biological forms, under God’s guidance, but it insists on the special creation of his soul. Pope Pius XII declared that "the teaching authority of the Church does not forbid that, in conformity with the present state of human sciences and sacred theology, research and discussions . . . take place with regard to the doctrine of evolution, in as far as it inquires into the origin of the human body as coming from pre-existent and living matter—[but] the Catholic faith obliges us to hold that souls are immediately created by God" (Pius XII, Humani Generis 36). So whether the human body was specially created or developed, we are required to hold as a matter of Catholic faith that the human soul is specially created; it did not evolve, and it is not inherited from our parents, as our bodies are.

It always amazes me how Muslims are so anxious to break one commandment to uphold another.

This tendency must be very disturbing to the Lord God.

Thanks, kittin.  I had no idea that the Catholic Church was backing down before Science to save its credibility.

sophia37 -> RE: Wikipedia flips Muslims the bird (2/17/2008 1:58:28 PM)

Whats interesting is that when I was growing up in the 60's/70's, I very clearly remember my mother being against the Catholic church because the statues of saints were Idol worship. It was the exact same argument. Strange.

Right.  Thanks.

EvilGenie -> RE: Wikipedia flips Muslims the bird (2/17/2008 2:56:20 PM)

Oh for fuxake, people really need to grow up! If one has a faith and is offended by something on Wiki, to which anyone can edit and add or remove anything therein (I did so recently on the Souss_Massa_Draa region of Morocco as I was googling something and the language content was incorrect), need to get a serious grip. Wiki would not be my first or ever source on anything. This is less about any religion and more about nonsense and the inherent need some people possess to protest anything and everything from the shape of a bar of soap to a centuries old religious depiction to books and film in my NSHO.

For clarity this is directed at protesters and not a poster to this thread. This trip to Wiki was purely accidental. I have never used it as a source if and when I have needed material on anything.
