I know most of my college professore that have been in the business long enough think that today's students aren't as hard working, or serious about their education as students 20 years ago.

It depends on who you are talking to.
I have an acquaintance who owns a fast food franchise, she told me she is tired of lazy,
young people that don't want to work, call in a lot and are just damn lazy.
She says, she plans to fire everyone and hire only Hispanics.
p.s.-she is Black.

I have learned that there is no particular work attitude that pertains to any one race, ethnicity, age, or social status. There are people who work hard and do as well as they possibly can - just because they feel good about themselves doing that. There are those who do exactly what they're supposed or expected to do - so that they won't get into trouble or fired. There are those who are "good-enuffers" - doing a haphazard job, believing that if it passes at firt glance for good work, nobody will look any closer. Then there are those who just don't give a shit.

It's been that way for at least 35 years - that's how long I've been a part of the work force.

There sure do seem to be a lot of lazy people with entitlement mentalities out there.  On the other hand crap wages attract crap attitudes.

I can only speak for myself but even in high school when i worked during the summer I putin a full 8-9 hours a day working for the water distict and then later on doing 70+ hours a week doing double duty between walgreens and a medical equipment supply company. It really depends on how you were raised, my mother wordked when she was sick and up until she couldn't any more form breast cancer. My grandmother worked through kidney failure and idd her dialysis (sp) at home.

I can't speak for America but certainly in Britain and to a lesser extent in other European countries, there is no security with a job snymore so I think there is a tendency not to invest too much effort in something that might only be temporary. Certainly the wages aren't brilliant compared to what they were ten years ago or it seems that way, the hours are longer, the holidays are less as are the perks. All in all, it is better to work for oneself than work for someone else, especially large companies who treat their workers like machines.

I think you are absolutely right, Meatcleaver, and wages ARE poor by comparison to those of ten years ago. When I worked on the south coast fifteen years ago the average hourly rate was approx. £6.50 - £6.75. Twelve years later I relocate to the south coast from London where I was earning 23k per annum, take on a long-term contract which recently ended, so that meant I was job hunting again. I was shocked to find that the average hourly rate is between...

£6.50 and £7.50.

Jobwise, there is little motivation for people and it's disheartening - thankfully I start a new job on 3rd March and my annual salary is very good, even for Brighton. While job hunting I noticed that government based jobs are few/far between and was told by the job centre that the number of jobs advertised is down more than 60%, with six monthly contracts being offered b/c that way they do not have to pay holiday entitlements, pensions etc... and at the end of the six months, rather than make those positions permanent, they will rehire - they would love to be able to get rid of civil servants that are due nice handshakes at the end of their service, but they cannot, for obvious reasons, afford to do so. It's a shocking state of affairs and the only way to beat the system is by either having a two income household, or being self employed.

How about- what is the attitude towards employees and fostering a sense of loyalty and security today versus 10, 20, 30, 40 years ago?

How positive is the educational system today on actually teaching life skills and ensuring a prosperous future vs standardized testing drones and tons of student loans vs 10, 20, 30, 40 years ago?

I think the "work ethic" has slacked off alot largely becauseof  the attitudeof employers.

The prize you get for doing a good job... for getting that project in before deadline etc is often being given more work...but not more money.

20/30/40 years ago an apprenticeship was a life skill and which many non-academic children were provided. An apprenticeship was pretty common and freely available to school leavers that wanted to learn a trade, nowadays they are a rarity and the sad fact in the UK (not sure how college educations are funded in the US) is that it USED to be every child's right to go onto higher education which was paid for by the government. That is no longer the case and people leaving college/university face years of debt to pay back their loans. I know many post grads that are working in anything but the field of choice and which has nothing to do with their degrees, that's their reality.

You didn't ask in regards to which age group....however, I'll tell you something that was said a verrrrrrrry long time ago (paraphrased for its time).....

"Kids today....they dress so oddly, the way they speak, it truly astounds me.  They care not at all for politics, and their future...as if they have none...and to think some day they're actually going to rule over us all".

Guess who said that?

(Socrates).
