earthydame -> Background Checks? (2/17/2008 4:44:08 PM)

Has anyone done a background check on a potential partner before?  Does anyone know of any reliable websites out there for this?

I'm facing the prospect of having to do something like this and  I'm hoping my credit card information won't be sent to the ends of the earth in the process.

(Yes, I do realize that if I feel I have to do a background check on someone before I meet them I should probally look at the idea if I should meet them anyway.)

Hi!

This will probably soon be moved to another forum. This is the health and safety forum. Which, in a way, I can see why you would ask this here. Otoh, the general forum will bring more answers, and is also the best place to post this query. I wish you the best.

I guess it depends on what you want to know about the person.  Most websites when you look for people will refer you to a background check type of website.
Credit check? Criminal history?  What is it you want to find?

I've never gone quite that drastic...I have had the ability.  I've had the drivers license and social security number of a few potentials when I was searching.  Although after talking to them a real long time and having a feel for them...plus the fact they gave me their personal info...when I could have wrecked havoc in their lives.  I never felt I had to go that far.
Intellus.com seems to be the one coming up for me the most...but again it depends on what you want to know.

sarzyness -> RE: Background Checks? (2/19/2008 11:31:13 AM)

well, i think it is a good idea doing backgroud checks on a potential partner.
do they know?
things thats theyve been accused of doing, and havnt been convicted of or soemthing like that, wont necessarily be on any records, i think the best way of finding out what they're really like is to ask their ex partner(s)
ok, i do know that everyone does deserve a second chance, but somethings people do there is jsut no excuse for, and i think its good that you want to find out what your getting into, before you get into it.

angelikaJ -> RE: Background Checks? (2/19/2008 12:15:21 PM)

it doesn't cost anything to see if they are a registered sex offender

Skully7000 -> RE: Background Checks? (2/19/2008 3:17:09 PM)

Be prepared: I've been called by previous employers b/c a background check turned up saying i was a Felon. it turned out it was a person with my same name living in the same state. only after I mentioned I was never ever arrested and was related to several cops who would help me prove it: that they dug deeper with the background check company to realize their mistake. I would have lost a very good job if the reason for them intially turning me down wasn't disclosed (which by law they don't need to do)

But of course I'm probably the RARE exception.

CalifChick -> RE: Background Checks? (2/19/2008 3:19:29 PM)

Why am I thinking Skully just put up the perfect defense for when I run that background check on him?  Admit it up front to throw them off the trail???  That felony? Oh yeah, that's right, he said that wasn't him.  [sm=hewah.gif]

MistresssAria -> RE: Background Checks? (2/19/2008 11:35:04 PM)

I've never done one, but I would insist on doing it for a sub if they were going to live with me.  It's not difficult to find a site to do it on.  Glad you're being safe!  And as angelikaJ said, you can look up registered sex offenders - the National Sex Offender Registry is at http://www.familywatchdog.us/

remember you don't need to prove your innocence just provide reasonable Doubt;)

but seriously i was lucky that they even told me they were not hiring me because of it...and lucky that they went back to the background company to have them double check... neither of which are legally required.

rather then a background check just go to my myspace page and ask any of the 16 men and women on my main profile what they think of me. 16 references...and companies only require 3. should it matter that they are all dummy accounts created by myself to pimp out "skully" I think not...

x's are not the  most reliable source of unbiased information specially if the relationship ended badly.  how do you know what the say is utter rubbish spewwed from a point of hate and vengance, or truth?

I doubt there's a way to tell.

GreedyTop -> RE: Background Checks? (2/22/2008 11:22:55 PM)

I'd rather have someone ask me straight out, first.  I've got nothing to hide.. warts and all, it's ME.
WOuld I run one on someone else?  Only if things seemed to be MOSTLY good, but something seemed off somehow.
That being said.. I trust my gut.  I have a history with a couple of jurisdictions (no felonies). But I do not think that I am inherently a BAD person.. since I wish people to judge me for who I am NOW, why shouldn't I extend that same courtesy? And truthfully, I wouldn't progress very far with someone that triggers an "um, this person isnt what they seem" response.

GMRTGS -> RE: Background Checks? (2/23/2008 12:20:03 AM)

Normally, we do not make any opinions on line or offline. However, I do not want anyone to endure what we have gone through in real life over several years. Here are my thoughts, having lived through the results of bad information being placed into the wrong hands.  Do you trust anyone who tells you that the information is accurate, because it comes from a  on line source or any computer system?  I can tell you from both a employer & subcontractor basis,while working for some agencies performing real background checks, as well as having worked in the data mining industry,that the only thing that backgrounds checks do is make the operators large sums of money trading your personal data.   Background checks are full of bad information. Data comes in from multiple streams tends to corrupt anyone and everyone. It is very rare, that information contained in a check is completely accurate.The more your name is similar to another the more likely information is cross linked or worse falsified. Since when was human error ever willing to correct a mistake and admit fault? Or wiling to pay financially for their mistakes?  I have seen first hand where someone has used some one Else's identity to lure someone into their lair. The suspect was caught only after they had already killed a few people. This guy had over thirty verified identities, that were completely clean. Do not trust anything you get from anyone. All public data, is at the least partially corrupted. Even government back ground checks are highly dependent on public data. So my opinion is to spend your time more wisely getting to know your local community and using bonified human associations to vet anyone. Make sure the person giving references, has no personal conflict or interest. Today the web offers many opportunities for those who want to deceive anyone can easily. Documentation that appears  to be real can be made for almost nothing. If someone wants to find you and do you harm, they  have the means to, they will take the time to cover their tracks and do it over a longer period of time.  Best advice is, if you do meet anyone, meet them  in a public space and make sure you have the  means to walk away. Make sure you have someone keep contact on you and with you through out. Be safe take care.

exactly, if you ask the ex, then they can show you that person in the worst possible light, and then you can form your own opinion of them, if the relationship did end badly, it must have been for a reason.

Lashra -> RE: Background Checks? (2/29/2008 6:40:54 AM)

My best friend is a detective and yes I had her confirm some information about my sub before I travelled a pretty good distance to meet him. I did it for my peace of mind to know that yes he lived where he said, worked where he said and that he was indeed separated from his wife. I believe in playing it safe, I know others would disagree with what I did, but this is my life I gotta do what I gotta do.

In this day and time, have a background check done.  I wish I had done this before I married.  I lost a ton of money.  At least you can see if the person is honest.
I would make them take a drug test as well.

MasterSteve57 -> RE: Background Checks? (2/29/2008 8:44:46 PM)

If you pay you can get access to almost anything about a person except perhaps their IRS tax return. For $20 you can get a list of their phone numbers and addresses going back 20 years or so. For around $200 you can get their whole legal/financial picture including their credit file.

But try Googling them first. Use all the variations of their name. For example:

John Robert Smith
John R. Smith
John R Smith
John Smith

If you have their phone number, run it. Again use various formats. (212)555-1212, (212) 555-1212, 212-555-1212 etc...

You can usually come up with quite a bit of info in this way.

LadyRainfire -> RE: Background Checks? (2/29/2008 10:42:01 PM)

I've been very fortunate that having worked with law enforcement and legal, I have friends and contacts that can get me anything I might want or need. However, by the time I agree to play with someone, I've known them long enough and trust them enough that it's not an issue for me. I'll have met them in person as much as possible, spent as much time with them as I could in a friendly platonic way, talked with them, have them met my friends, hopefully met their friends, etc, etc., etc.... If I'm feeling after all of that that I still need to run a check, then I shouldn't be playing with them. Either I trust them or I don't. Now, if this is someone you've only met once or twice and don't really know, maybe you should wait a bit before scening with them or keep things as public as possible. Not everything is going to show up on a check....
