I just finished reading Submission, the first time novel by Marthe Blau. “Finally (just kidding), American readers can be riveted by the controversial novel that sent tremors through the French establishment (mon dieu!). Sexual obsession, domination and extreme desire drive the story of Elodie, a young married Parisian lawyer who finds herself swept up in a cycle of sadomasochistic lust. Based on the author’s own experience, this sophisticated and captivating novel exudes the sensuality that only the French know how to deliver (not in my experience).”
Upon finishing the novel, I find that Elodie should be tied up and spanked just for her poor writing. She claims her master took her into a bookstore and informed her that someday she should write a book about their experiences together. Our favorite little slave quickly jots down the story of her shameful encounters with her (of course) handsome, wealthy and erudite master. Coincidentally, it seems that everyone her master scenes with are handsome, wealthy and erudite. If she’s not being flogged on a yacht, it’s in the penthouse of a five star hotel or bent over a Bentley. Poor, poor Elodie, those fine leather seats pinch so. Alas, being the good little slave that she is she has complied with her master’s wishes once again by writing this little book. How I wish her master had asked her to accomplish something more useful – like donate her legal skills to save poor children, animals, rodents (fill in the blank). Anyway – just curious if anyone else has read this newest sneak peek into our lifestyle. Note to Ms. Blau: You owe me two hours of my precious life plus $17.50 (perhaps you can find it on the floor of the Bentley while you’re bent over the seat). Used book anyone?
