Termyn8or -> RE: Casual Conversation (2/19/2008 12:11:48 AM)

You go to the bar during the week, Monday, Wednesday, whatever. When you see prospectus you sit at least one seat away, never sit right next to her right away.

You DO NOT buy her a drink, you DO NOT compliment her looks, you DO NOT do alot of things.

Bars have decorations, you find one that even mildly interests you and ask her about her opinion of it. Be sure to say something like "I think that is the most interesting piece of crap they got up there, what do you think ?". You see for this to work you must elicit responses. If she has her eye on something else, shift the conversation to that.

Once you have struck up a conversation, go sit next to her, but DO NOT TOUCH HER. At least not yet. Watch her breathing and sync your breathing with her's. This does things, even though she is not conciously aware of it. She can feel it, if she wants to. She is not at that bar for a drink, and neither are you.

After a short time you can go farther. Be contemporary, mention something in the environment and at the right time, touch her on the shoulder and point to something and say "What do you think of that ?". You kinda hafta play this by ear, but if you are looking you do it. But in any given situation, if you want, usually you can have. This is psychology and I really am reluctent to use it. I think I did mention that I am dangerous.

I do not really want to get girls or friends this way, but I could. I just think it is kinda dishonest. I think it unfair that I have this knowledge and most people don't.

I could do it and have.

I don't anymore.

Great Idea.A public service corpse with say two years minimum, with an option to do just a single year in the military.

That would solve our recruiting problems and would create a huge pool of labor for public work.

I would love this to be required in order to drive, vote, get a PEL grant or government assistance, etc.

Thanks for your service,thickerdenwater.

one year in the military wont do anything but cause problems. hell, 2 years wont dont anything, but you have the right idea. civilians should do *SOMETHING* to earn the privleges our country has afforded us, even if they want to take em all away anyway :P

And your quite welcome, thanks for your support

Tom:
I am an American citizen and I have rights not privileges.  Making my rights contingent on military service is fubar.
If I remember  correctly when you raised your right hand you swore to protect and defend the constitution...that document speaks directly to rights and not privileges.
thompson

thompson: learn to read between the lines. your "rights" do not include a drivers license. there are more, then just that, but that right there would most assured solve a lot of problems. and also, pay attention to the details. I said something, not just military. Some kind of public service.

and as far as your pic posts, I assumed they were pics cause when I looked at a few differnent threads you posted it it was "awaiting approval"

colouredin -> RE: Casual Conversation (2/19/2008 9:08:49 AM)

Questions questions questions, personally i like asking really unusual ones, if you could go back in time and change one thing what would it be, if you had three wishes what would you wish for etc etc, its interesting to me to see how peoples minds works. Also if you are asking questions then you are showing an interest, if something interesting comes up you can run with it I used to think interests in books and films were the most important thing but i now just like to know the way a person thinks especailly if its differant to me. Another good one is favorites, whats your fave colour/food etc etc cos you never run out of it. If you talk about things in an unusual way the conversation in my experiance flows better than if you are saying "have you seen any good films lately" the amount you can say about that runs out quite quickly. But its all about what you're interested in and finding out about the other persons intersts.

This is Darcy

Many moons ago a freind of a friend used to use this line at the rock clubs that we'd go to, playing on the law of averages (though he didn't call himself Tom, that not being his name [;)]).

Funny thing is, he used to almost always end up taking some girl home - I wouldn't recommend this method, though, unless you're extremely good at brushing off rejection and more than a llittle handsome (he was both). [:D]

Welcome back, Marine*, and good luck.

(Actually, you shoud read The Game by Neil Strauss - it's a book about pick-up artists, but some of the ice-breaking techniques that they use equally valid for just starting normal conversations.)

*fixed for accuarcy :D

dont worry, Im not mad. Most people dont understand why it bothers us at all, but I compare it to calling a republican a demorat. and thanks for the book, I might have to go check it out

So Ive run into a slight problem. I dont have any shyness about me what-so-ever, but yeah I cant seem to be able to start covnersation. The main reason: I have no clue what to talk about. I can use the casual mindless banter, about jobs, hobbies, direction in life, etc.

Starting conversations is hard to do.  I struggle with it my self.

My advice is to listen first--find out what they find interesting, then talk about that.

Asking a question about said topic is a great way to start.  Conversation occurs when both people are talking. [;)]

all that really matters is that people support us, a title is as important as people think, just as long as the bearer understands the signifigance and what they have had to go through in order to achieve it.

Celticlord, I have to admit, the Marines do have the best looking uniforms.

P.S. but, a lot of ladies like the Sailors.[:D]

All this advice is wonderful. Thank you, Tom for starting this thread. You've asked a question I have had for many years. And thank you for your service. It takes a special kind of person to do what you've done.

Here are a couple of tactics that have worked for me:

If you're, say, in line at the grocery store, try noticing something unusual in their cart and asking them about it.
If you're next to someone in a mall, and something catches the attention of both of you, remark on the incident and ask their opinion if they don't give it immediately.

And - Termyn8or - you had me the moment you started matching my breathing. Can I follow you home?

Subbie, oh sure that'd work for me!
"What the hell! You use "EXTRA ABSORBANT" crotch rockets?"
"Hey, my sister does too!"
"What kind of mouse mattresses do you use?"

stella41b -> RE: Casual Conversation (2/19/2008 4:22:28 PM)

I've worked as a TEFL teacher and done thousands of hours of conversation lessons to foreign students of English.

People can only talk about two subjects - what they know about, and what they want to know about.

Most people enjoy talking about themselves and their lives so there you have it, their lives, their pasts, the people in their lives, their work and their interests.

It never fails.

Edited to remove offending spelling mistake.

lighthearted -> RE: Casual Conversation (2/19/2008 4:52:50 PM)

along the lines as to what bound2one said, I always look for something I may have in common with that person, and recognizing that not every conversation has to be a soul-shaking one.  sometimes just a laugh over a celebrity or current even can break the ice and get the flow going.

That's cause the Sailors are always at the bars drinking and mooning over the women. The Marines are there looking for a fight. Either way both want some action, lol!

If I had my way everyone would be required to do something, be it military, peace corps, american red corss, something to give them insight into the world around them instead of letting them live in their own little bubble :P

Total agreement here.

On another note, I understand the Marine/Soldier thing. My mother's friends call me a Soldier and keep saying Army, when in truth I'm a Navy Sailor. And when I tell them I was an FC (Fire Controlman) they think I mean firefighter. C'est la vie, *shrug*

Do you mind if a Sailor calls you a "shipmate"?

Yes, your arse belongs to the US Marines, aka, Dept of the US NAVY, we get your arses there and unleash the dogs of WAR ! !

Thanks for defending my FREEDOM !
I salute all that have served, and are serving, without US there would be no USA.....

thickerdenwater -> RE: Casual Conversation (2/19/2008 9:50:57 PM)

Naivetempest: If im on a ship with them, sure. otherwise I dont think any sailor would say such words :P
and as far as marines looking for a fight: i cant deny that. but thats only because we dont have to look for women, they look for us :D

interesting fact: the army has more boats then the navy; the navy has more birds then the air force, and the marines have more men then all combined! lmao. we all have a part in one big team, and we all do it exceptionally well when we have to.
