Soaps... Every soap opera watching 'Q' person needs their tv/s removing. It should be illegal for anyone, under the age of 65, to watch a soap opera! Just what the hell is Corrie/Enemadale all about, what is the educational value in crap like that?

The only time I found tv even remotely entertaining was when I was staying at the folks and they were watching an episode of One Foot In The Grave, there was I, thinking about me inheritance, and Victor Meldrew stuck his foot into the rotting carcass of a hedgehog thinking it was his slipper (the room was dark). I cracked a smile.

It amazes me just how much crap people will plonk themselves down infront of, not just for a few minutes, but for hours, perhaps even days without blinking, dribbling inanely and wondering why it is their lecky bills are exorbitant.

If people have Sky Digital, like my folks do, I wonder how long it takes them to figure out that they've watched the same episode of The Golden Girls fourteen times, or anything else for that matter. I'm beginning to sound like a miserable cow. Perhaps I am. Bah Humbug to the braincell sucking monster known as TV!

That's pretty much the effect television has on me as well. Drives me batty out of my belfrey. Especially in the mornings. I'm particularly adverse to the commercials.

I hate commercials with a vengeance. If I watch a program that has commercial interruptions I'll flick the channel to something else. The rebel in me refuses to sit there being brainwashed. Otherwise, I switch the sound off: it's instructive to watch the drivel without the noise.

Gawd I hate tv lol.

You should see the American box... it's fucking terrifying. Even the 'educational' channels offer little else than vulgarising 3rd grade bullshit. The government channels have the very occasional documentary (like, once every three months?), but you've got to be lucky to catch it.

It's a commercial enterprise with a capital 'C', like 'crap'.

PS: I'm really enjoying this lol!

Oh I have, I lived in Austin/Dallas for a year, KS. There is more commercial air time than programme time, which is bizarre. It's tedious, but then, I generally think most tv is tedious. I remember being very ill, when I could finally get out of bed but was still weak, my mother had me laying on the sofa. As she left the room she flicked the tv on, put it on ITV and buggered off to do her housework telling me to "Shout if you need anything, love". I'm laying there, feeling like death warmed up, got the tv on and on comes Titchmarsh and his right Charlie. When that finished, i think it was an interior design programme with some flouncy fart of a man wearing ruffled shirts and talking as if he'd had elocution lessions from Julian Clary. Oh my gawd! After several sets of commercials followed by some vile Australian soap opera I began shouting out, "Mum!"... no answer. "MUM!!!" Still no answer. Of course there wasn't, my mother's bloody DEAF! It took me almost 20 minutes to manoeuvre myself from the sofa to the tv - which had the remote on TOP of it! Very helpful.

What perplexes me, KS, is that people moan like crazy at how exorbitant the tv licence is, yet there's a simple solution - DONT BUY ONE!

I used to have mine on in the background all the time.  I moved my computer into another room, so I rarely watch it now.  I am actually using a program guide for the first time in 15 years.  I look and I see if there is anything worth watching.  I no longer sit and habitually channel surf.  Of course, I don't think sitting in front of the computer is much better.  I sit in front of a computer all day at work, then I come home and sit in front of one.

It'd be interesting to find out how people utilised their time infront of their pcs. As for me, while checking the forums I'm also working on other things, then there's writing (my book) along with helping my boy with his work - he works from home.

Torture by television. My head's buzzing at the thought of it.

If only there wasn't so much advertising on the tube, it might be bearable, but as you say, the majority of airtime is composed of commercials and other sponsoring messages.

They really found a way to turn people into sheep. Beeeehhh, let's watch telleeeeeehhhh.

I got rid of the glass teat completely about 6 years ago.

If it is on when I go over to an acquaintance's, or the doctors, etc., I'm aware of it, but I don't watch anything (my friends by and large rarely have theirs on).

When I had one, I kept it down to about 10 hours a week, and I felt like I had been robbed of time I'd never get back on about half of those hours.

As far as the so called educational channels like History, Discovery, and so forth, I already know who won WWII...and how the longbow was developed, the history of jazz, rock, blues, country and classical...how Asian swords were made, what is in the Book of Kells, et al.

I did enjoy a few cooking shows, some live music performances, satires like King of the Hill, the occasional pilot like Committed and Laroquette, and the Burke stuff on Connections, but that was about it.

......purely out of interest, how much television do people watch?
i have the set on most of the day, tuned to the news channel........other than that, i doubt i sit down and watch an hour a day.....

Tel-e-vis-ion.... Oh yes I have one of those! I made the most amazing discovery on it the other day! Apparently there there are also channels that are for adults and not just for the little people that run the household. One day, I hope to be allowed to tuned into those channels......

LOL!  My um's have the television on at every possible chance.  Disney would be on 24/7 if they had their choice.  They don't of course.... evil mom that I am.  lol  I prefer music stations throughout the day.  I do have some favorite shows - purely mindless entertainment like Project Runway or Top Chef or American Idol.  I also love reruns of Seinfeld.  I am much more selective now and will turn off the tube if I'm not watching.  Others in the house tend to leave it on for background noise, which makes me nuts.

I usually have it on when I'm at the computer.  Discovery channel, USA/TNT for Law & Order.  Used to be glued to Bravo, for West Wing *sigh*.  Scifi channel. Movieplex and AMC sometimes, depending whats on.

Now.. how much of that do I actually pay attention to?  Depends what I'm doing on the computer (oddly enough, since coming here to the forums, I don't think I've actually WATCHED an entire program through! LOL)

Actually watch?  Maybe 5-7 hours a week as an average.  Local news, bits of movies or History/Discovery if I just need something to watch when I'm awake in the middle of the night for no good reason.  About the only thing I'll intentionally sit down to watch right now are the speeches on primary nights or a specific news/commentary show.

It depends. If there is something happening in current events (like the primaries or debates), the tv will be on for longer periods of time. We don't leave it on just to have it on though. I'm too frugal with energy bills.  There are a couple of reality shows that I like to watch and if there's an old movie that I love I'll either tape it or watch it. On average, I'd say I watch about .. oh, maybe 7-10 hours a week. Himself is probably 12 - 14 hours a week. He likes Nova, Frontline and several brit coms.

Celeste

PS - completely forgot about DVD's, if you add that in, you can tac on another 2 or 3 hours a week for each of us since we watch one or two of those a week together.

edited to nod at Bound: Yep, Project Runway and Top Chef are two of my shows as well. And Hell's Kitchen. :;chuckles::
