ORIGINAL: thickerdenwater ok so did anyone read the part about the price hike between types of gas at all? theres a 3 cent raise on reg and a 7 cent raise on premium, when you use credit. like i said before, i understand the extra cash for credit, but this right here makes no sense. why would you charge extra when using credit, JUST FOR A DIFFERENT TYPE OF GAS? As others have said, the fee that visa/mastercard/etc charge the gas station is based on a percentage. So, a product with a higher cost will have a higher fee than one with a lower cost. The math doesn't work out exactly, but they probably charge extra on the premium just because they can. This actually used to be the status quo, when credit cards were a relative novelty... now that gas prices are so high it's coming back. The credit card companies prohibit merchants from charging more for credit card sales as part of their merchant agreement, so the price difference is listed as a "cash discount" instead of a "credit surcharge". Oddly enough, the only other place where i've encountered this is in firearm purchases... it's pretty much a given in that business, at least in my area. BTW, some cards (my AmEx, for example) give the customer 5% cash back on gas purchases. Plus, since almost all stations now require you to pre-pay for purchases, which requires two trips (and two waits on line) into the store for cash purchases, the convenience is more than worth it to me (especially travelling cross-country on a vehicle with a 140-mile range between stops!!!)
