Lately, since Ive been back in Jersey, Ive noticed gas stations sparatically located that charge extra for using a credit card. No other business, to my knowledge, does this. Ive seen minimum amount to use credit cards, but not extra. And to make it more perplexing, I saw regular for $2.77 cash, and $2.80 credit. then premium: $3.03 cash and $3.10 credit. Why would regular be only 3 cents more and then premium 7 cents more? wtf is the difference when you have to pay for it? I think this assholes are about to get called out on the news sometime in the near future :D

The difference is the gas station does not have to pay processing fees on cash sales, but does have to pay on credit card sales.  They cut the price for cash-paying customers as incentive to get you to pay with cash.

that also did in fact, come to mind. but the part about the drastic change in different gas types is what kinda irked me. that part, does not make sense.

Some Jersey stations give a discount for cash rather than charging more for credit.  I can only think of one station near me that gives a cash discount.  All of the rest charge the same whether cash or credit.
On a side note....I'm pretty sure NJ is the only state left that has attendants pump gas for you.  I love this.  I never have that smell on my hands.  I look like a complete idiot when I go into Pennsy because I have to read the directions on the pump on how to do it.

Aileen, why do I think you have the skills to get any guy standing about to pump your gas (or anything else you want pumped, at the moment)?

yapperz!  Same here!

Sometimes as much as 10c+ per gallon!

Gotta  love it!  The only problem is that these guys have such long lines!

The processing fee is like 3.5% and that is a lot to pay for the convenience of plastic imo :)

Welcome to the banking cartel and people catching on :)

It's state law there that people can't pump their own gas, right?  I know that's true for only a few states.  That just seems so weird to me.  I haven't seen a full service gas station in at least 15 years.  I was at a gas station about 5 years ago, and this little old lady offered me $5 to pump her gas.  Of course I couldn't accept it; I just did it for free.  I don't think she left her house very much.  The Oldsmobile she was driving was older than me and it looked brand new.  I was just tickled to death that she never thought she should learn how to pump her own gas.  You know what? I think she's right.  You can't find too many of those kinds of gas stations anymore.  My grandmother lived in this tiny town in West Virginia until the day she died.  She got her gas as the same station for 40 years.  It was one of those old stations that still had full service and actually still did repairs on cars.  I don't think the old guy made a profit; he just did it out of habit.  I don't know why we don't reward people for keeping things like that alive.

I'm pretty sure it is state law.  Although if they're really busy they certainly don't stop you from pumping your own.  And just the other day I had the guy pumping actually clean all of my windows and ask if I needed the oil checked.

HAving a business that accepts credit cards I can relate to the gas station owners. 3-5% charge we pay on every CC purchase.
ANd since it really doeswn't work to charge more for credit, you discount for cash. Same end effect, but it always sounds better if you are doiscounting a price than if you are upcharging.

Considering the profit the gas station owner gets on the gallon is about 3-5 cents. when you buy it on credit you're getting it at about cost.
That's why there are almost no stations anymore that don't have a convienince store attached.

yup and that whole damn CC monopoly should be replaced by independant state and county banks like it was years ago issuing their own cards say for 2wice whats in the account and take it from there.

Bye bye banking cartel.  Hello competition!

ok so did anyone read the part about the price hike between types of gas at all? theres a 3 cent raise on reg and a 7 cent raise on premium, when you use credit. like i said before, i understand the extra cash for credit, but this right here makes no sense. why would you charge extra when using credit, JUST FOR A DIFFERENT TYPE OF GAS?

My guess would be that the people who buy Premium are the people most appt to pull out the plastic.

As others have said, the fee that visa/mastercard/etc charge the gas station is based on a percentage. So, a product with a higher cost will have a higher fee than one with a lower cost. The math doesn't work out exactly, but they probably charge extra on the premium just because they can.

This actually used to be the status quo, when credit cards were a relative novelty... now that gas prices are so high it's coming back.

The credit card companies prohibit merchants from charging more for credit card sales as part of their merchant agreement, so the price difference is listed as a "cash discount" instead of a "credit surcharge".

Oddly enough, the only other place where i've encountered this is in firearm purchases... it's pretty much a given in that business, at least in my area.

BTW, some cards (my AmEx, for example) give the customer 5% cash back on gas purchases. Plus, since almost all stations now require you to pre-pay for purchases, which requires two trips (and two waits on line) into the store for cash purchases, the convenience is more than worth it to me (especially travelling cross-country on a vehicle with a 140-mile range between stops!!!)

Not so long ago credit was always higher than cash.  Of course it doesn't bother me I only use cash and if its cold I either go to a full service station, we have some that are the same price as self serve, or I send a passenger into pay and I pump or vice versa.

Stores get charged a 6% processing fee for using credit cards. If they're only charging 3% then you're getting a break. If they believe that people who buy ultra high premium can afford to cover the processing charge, and charge them for it, why is this wrong?

It is against the law in Oregon to pump your own gas.  The state voted to outlaw it to protect jobs.
