this is rediculous. 3 officers?  over an expired tag?

Well this is one of those cases where I feel there is much more behind the blurb. He admits telling the police that 'they committed grand theft' and I can't help but wonder just how belligerent he was. That said I don't think it would be neccessary to taz a man unless he presented a clear threat, but there is no way to know that. *crap I just dripped mango all over my keyboard [&:]*

sub4hire -> RE: 78 yr old taserred- check out this threat (2/20/2008 6:57:48 AM)

At least he isn't dead over being tasered.  The story itself says they aren't telling you exactly what happened.  So, it may have started over an expired tag but I'm sure that isn't what ended it.

pahunkboy -> RE: 78 yr old taserred- check out this threat (2/20/2008 7:06:18 AM)

I side with the old man.  He had a good career. he has no reason to lie. A taser- picture how it is to stick your finger in a outlet.

When is a taser used?  when a consumer is rude?  when a consumer is demanding? when the customer throw a tantrrom?

Ever see PD these days? there is bullet proof glass, and you have to buzz to enter IF they let you enter! then inside you are still not inside. you have to speak into the mic.

so whomwas he a threat to?  the potted plant?  the brochure rack?

CA seem stricter over car tags then many states. i know a gal who was in jail a weekend over a vehicel snafu. they can seise you cAr here in PA, maybe disrupt your license..but no jail..and hoepfully no taser- but then we are 20 years behind the county, 30 behind Calif

TheAwfulTruth -> RE: 78 yr old taserred- check out this threat (2/20/2008 7:19:43 AM)

Perhaps the police didnt quite get the meaning behind "appropriate response". An unarmed 78 year old man, unless he's chuck norriss' Grandad, is not much of a threat to one, let alone three trained officers.  When I hit that age I imagine the worst Id be able to do to someone would be poop My pants and make them feel ill. Two people can restrain almost anyone so 50,000 volts seems a touch excessive. And note, a broken arm as well. One of the Doorstewards I work with accidentally broke a violent customers arm when restraining him...result? Arrested and charged for assault. Goose/gander situation perhaps?

Kirren -> RE: 78 yr old taserred- check out this threat (2/20/2008 7:48:48 AM)

It would explain why My gran fears getting a speeding ticket, when she isnt even DOING the speed limit.

All I can say is get ready for a police state type situation...coming to a community near you!

A broken elbow that is perfectly healed when he is showing the reporters the fresh Taser marks.  A right leg that 'spontaneously broke' several months after the incident.
Some people will fall for anything.

The tape will tell...

You don't go to jail in California over expired tags.  There was more to it, simply put.
He accused them of stealing his car to begin with...who knows what happened after that?

Did you bother to look at the tapes?  There is no sign of any 'broken elbow'.

Real0ne -> RE: 78 yr old taserred- check out this threat (2/20/2008 8:25:10 AM)

If there is no ordinance that specifically enumerates the authoity to pull his car due to expired plates they did steal it.

That and all the agression that the tape showed was on the part of the officers.   Unless this guy made a physical or verbal threat to do bodily harm to these yahoos they have no cause to use excessive force.

Arguing with them is not a tazerable offence.

Calm down.

It will tell who`s BSing or not, that`s what I meant.

Someone is lying and we don`t have to rely on anyone`s story.

As to the injuries.People think your arm has to break cleanly to be broken, not so .I have broken my wrist, the big instep bone in my foot and and several ribs and kept working and doing my thing.

If there were injuries consistent with a "fracture" documented at the time, then we`ll know. You can`t fake that evidence.

On the leg bone,my Grandmother broke her hip while walking. She was just stepping down a two step stair and doing nothing else and "snap",it broke and she fell. She never recovered.

This guy could have had severe bone lose and got the break from that.Who knows if the taser is related or not?Probably not.

The moral of this story is obviously, take your calcium supplements.

MissMorrigan -> RE: 78 yr old taserred- check out this threat (2/20/2008 8:44:13 AM)

Resisting arrest is, though, RO. I viewed the second tape, it seems the officer was attempting to cuff the old boy, but the old boy was having none of it... infact, it seemed as if the officer didn't want to exert as much pressure on cuffing him as he likely would have someone considerably younger. I would have liked to have heard audio with that clip. As for an old boy not being a threat, my stepfather is 6'5 and a very agile old boy at age 78, if he wanted to hurt someone there's no doubt that he's physically capable of doing so.

Owner59 -> RE: 78 yr old taserred- check out this threat (2/20/2008 8:53:23 AM)

It looks like he turned and presented his hand together, behind his back.

That`s about as cooperative as you can be.It`s after their hands are on him, that things get rough.

I think he has a case.

Miss Morrigan,
Three young strappers and this old codger?...Pah-leeze.

MissMorrigan -> RE: 78 yr old taserred- check out this threat (2/20/2008 9:00:05 AM)

He does turn, but we're not privy to any audio and clearly he doesn't stay turned, it seems to me that he withdrew his compliance. As for three strappers against that poor old boy... He's Irish, old boys like him are tough and a fighting instinct is intrinsic - says she, part-irish, who knows a lot about clans and their predisposition for fighting. I think the old boy challenged all three, they, fearing at being given the beating of their lives, opted to tazer him... they were lucky, it would have been worse had it been his missus [:D]

The fact is, the video clip is open to several interpretations, more so due to lack of audio. Three strapping policemen are not going to tazer an old boy while security cameras are running just b/c their day was a little slow and they wanted to liven it up a little.

Owner59 -> RE: 78 yr old taserred- check out this threat (2/20/2008 9:08:51 AM)

Fair enough. The audio will shed some light.

Does this also mean I`m (being half Irish) going to take on three 20 somethings, when I almost 80?God help me.

DesFIP -> RE: 78 yr old taserred- check out this threat (2/20/2008 9:16:55 AM)

I'd be curious to see a reference to this in an objective media since live leak has their own agenda, freely admitted. Perhaps the bits of tape they didn't choose to show would present this in a different light.

MissMorrigan -> RE: 78 yr old taserred- check out this threat (2/20/2008 9:31:04 AM)

What I said was 'tongue in cheek', but I would hope you'd have such spunk and stamina when you embrace your twilight years.  Besides, you know us Irish, when our arses are pinned to the wall we come out fighting [;)]
