We will one day find out first-hand why Europeans walk and ride bikes (and use public transportation).

I have friends who "wouldn't be caught dead" riding the bus, because only "the homeless and losers" ride the bus. Well, the bus may not be as convenient as a car, but pretty soon, it's gonna be so much less expensive, they'll be queuing up to ride.

31.75 up here gets you a buss pass good for the entire month. which is about what me and Diesel spend on gas every 2 weeks give or take based on how much running around we do.

well many people here drive 100+ kilometers there and back to work every day.
so thats 1000 kilometers per week.  4000 per month.

how much would that cost on $1.50 per litre

Hold on...I know this one.

Add 20, divide by 7, carry the 1....if a train were heading West and it was heading towards a small town in the midwest and another train were going through Orlando but the winds were blowing North East.....

(Uhmmmm....it's a lot).

I'd take the bus, if the public transit system here was worth a damn.

So maybe all of those HUGE single person SUVs that I love to hate will all become busses.  We could probably pile 20 or 30 people in each of them.  Gosh maybe I was wrong about them all along.

It's been like that for years upon years in other countries.  Muslim countries no.
Australia has been around 7 dollars a gallon for as long as I can remember.  All over the UK the same way.
That's why they have very tiny cars there that go a very long way for the gas they put in them.

In Belgium and in France you can find in many cities bikes for rent, you take them at one point and can return them on the other side of the city.
Also many countries decided to go back to tramway like France, Holland, etc.

I think the difference between Americans and Europeans is that ( my POV) , American act like if they could , they will  enter mall and shops with their cars.
I've seen in texas that many of the people prefered to spend 20 minutes ridding around the mall  to find an empty spot then walking for 2 minutes.Maybe it is not the same in all states I don't know.

I'm a very single person who drives an SUV. If I don't drive an SUV I'm trapped on a private dirt road & the nearest bus stop (station? dunno name) is 14 miles away. The nearest park & ride is 11 miles away and my grocery store is 8 miles. It would make no sense for me to travel 14 miles to a bus that doesn't go in the right direction or to go 11 miles to share a ride.

It's pretty much the same all over - and then they take the handicapped spaces, meaning that my roommate and I have to find a "regular" spot with access on the passenger side (usually only found at the far end of the lot) and push my wheelchair the length of the lot while some athletic-looking person bounds from their car to the store.

(Sorry - pet peeve)

It s the same here in matter of facts, handicaped spots are mainly taken by valid persons. Apparently  respect in lacking everywhere in the world.

1 gallon = 4.546 litres
so $1-50 per litre is $6-82 per gallon

Still, its over a pound a litre here, something like £5-00 a gallon or nearly USD 10-00 a gallon

the fuel prices feed through to public transportation too

we had a report on the radio yesterday; diesel fuel for trains has gone from 14p a litre to 50p a litre in a few short years (this is red diesel, not the taxed stuff for road use)

a rise of 3x and more for fuel means higher fares for all
