Well, are you? Why? Why not? Personally i'm not the kind of person that could ever get involved in the community that way. Although I have been dragged to a few gay bars in Soho, London by my OTT-Very Dom-Gay friend.

Just wondered what everyone elses view was, and if you would recommend anything.

To the extent of going to events, and even lending a hand when required, I sorta involved.

It's tons of fun.  The scene here is small and intimate, and has a lot of great people in it.

Yes,  we visit the local fetishclub.  I'm also co manager of the York munch and organise events too.

London is full of fetish events of one type or another,  so take your pic!

We're even having discussions about bringing an event down to London that's aimed at those who are new to clubs and public play etc.

Over an hour to the closest munch. As it happens, the members of it I know about appear to be all single males since I've been invited to it repeatedly by men who don't seem to understand the word no. That by itself is a turn off. The other thing is that I live in a small town. I don't want to go into the grocery store and be accosted by someone. I'm a parent, being outed would cause long lasting problems for my ums. Not only would I be a pariah, so would they. They don't deserve that. Plus there's that over an hour drive each way which is dark both ways half the year. And in good weather, I'd rather take the kids mini golfing.

I have tried a time or two but I  really really really  dont like it. So much so that when I was here alone I  wouldnt even chat with  someone that was interested in me if they were envolved in a group

I am more than an hour from the closest club that holds munches and parties regularly.  Denver is the next closest at two and a half hours (three or more, depending on traffic).  I'm not interested in attending a function that has me driving around late at night or in bad weather, so I generally don't go this time of year and when I do, I stay overnight with friends.

The reason I enjoy these groups, and especially MAsT (which is a group that only gets together to discuss assigned topics)…is for the educational value and camaraderie.  It’s hard to be so involved with something and never be around folks of a like mind; who likes to be so damn secretive?  So, when I go up north, it’s like ‘old home week’ for me; I see friends and meet new people and watch demos and learn new stuff and perhaps get to practice a bit on someone’s backside.

It’s all good,
Beverly

It does not appeal to me. I don't feel the need to "join a club" to prove who I am.

Ouch!

While I 'know' you well enough to understand that comment was not directed at anybody in particular, I wanted to add:  neither do I.

As I said, there are several reasons I enjoy rubbing elbows with like-minded people...as proof of who I am, isn't one of 'em.  While my BDSM pals are good friends, they are not my life, either...I have vanilla interests as well.  I am a birder too, and enjoy hikes with other birders now and then, too.  <shrugs>  They don't prove who I am either.

I wish there was a local BDSM community where I live.  I wish I had time to participate in the ones a few hours away from me, like New Orleans and Houston.

No. It's over an hour (traffic permitting) to the nearest club & it doesn't appeal to me anyway.

LT,
Your sig got me in trouble in my biology class. I wrote whoremoans instead of hormones on a quiz.

Sorry Bearlee, apparently my quick and short sentence came across more curtly than I intended it to.

No, it was not directed at you.

no, i'm not active in the Chicago BDSM scene though i'm good friends with a couple of Dominas and get invited to scenes/parties.  i rarely attend them since they're usually scheduled on the same night when i'm covering a band.

I'd say I'm pretty active.... I go to at least one munch and one discussion group a month, and usually at least one play party... But then, I'm not on a board, I'm not a munch organizer (more than anyone else in the group is, anyway), and I rarely actually PLAY at the play parties. I joined the discussion group I'm in because it's local, and my age group. The munches and play parties I go to to hang out with that group, to spend time with my friends. Outside the discussion meetings, conversation is only about kink about 25% of the time... and that much, only if you count the fact that we're a fairly sexually liberated group that discusses sex and kink laws and politics, as well as planning other events to attend.

That being said, without a group of people to involve myself with, I don't know that I'd be interested. The educational value is magnificent, but I get intimidated by heavy public play without a constant partner. So it's not out of line to say that I'm in the community to open myself to the possibility of a kinky relationship more than I would be otherwise. Besides, it gets me out of the house, which is a rare enough occurrence.

ETA: Wow, that last paragraph is a bit misleading on a second re-read... I don't mean to say that without being involved in the BDSM community I'd be less interested in BDSM. I mean to say that without a steady group to see on a regular basis, I'd be less interested in the community, because I'm there more for the friendship than the kink. Also, not that if I weren't involved I'd be less interested in a kinky relationship, just that I feel being involved opens/increases my chances of finding a kinky partner. I do the online dating thing, but it's not really my preference.

Perhaps I should have worded it something like........."for my own personal validation"? OR better yet, "I am a nasty tempered unsociable bitch!"?
