Chloelicious -> what do you know about Belgium? (2/21/2008 7:47:58 AM)

I'm bored so I start a thread that probably will be 'dead' before it started but he I am

What do you know about Belgium?
What do you think about our Walloon/ flemish little war?
( if you heard about it)

Thank you in advance.
Chloé

Je vivais a Lille, autrefois. J'allais souvent en Belgique: on y bouffe super bien, et les plages sont geniales, j'aimais bien Bruxelles.

What surprises me is that such a tidy country is going through such an upheaval because of an old language and cultural partition. Someone said, a long time ago, that in the future politics would be axed around regional culturalism and that nation states would disappear. Perhaps they were right, and what's going on in Belgium today is a perfect illustration of that?

I belive it was Eric Idle who said, " Lets not call them anything"

Well mostly the issue is made by politicians because most of Belgian people flemish/walloon can live together without a problem.

Hey, your French is improving, you old rascal. Another fantastic thing about Belgium: the beers.

Oh. My. GOD. The beers are the best in the world. With the chocolates. Best in the world also. And they make wicked cafes liegeois (obviously so).

I won't mention the 'barraques a frites' stands near the beaches; but those are awesome also.

The people are friendly (well, unless you're French speaking only in the middle of Flanders).

By exemple did you knew that the dynamo was discovered by a Belgian?

Do you know Belgian artists (singer, painter, band, etc...)

RealityLicks -> RE: what do you know about Belgium? (2/21/2008 8:09:53 AM)

The Dardennes brothers?  I thought Rosetta was fantastic.  We don't get to see much of their stuff here.

Reality licks

Yes  they are Belgian.

Well if you liked "rosetta" you would love "the child" or "the ax"
Those directors are from the same city I 'm  |Liege (Seraing) , 150 miles from brussels|

Wich kind of beer did you tried?
That's true that the "baraque a frite"* is a Belgian cultural exception.

* little caravan where you can buy french fries, fresh made, with kinda 15 different sauces. You find them on every corner.

I went to the Benelux in the early nineties to sample the various beers of Belgium--I'm quite fond of Trappist ales. I took a train from Rotterdam to Brussels and when I got off the train, I had one of the biggest d'Oh moments of my life. I had totally forgotten that French would be spoken in the south. Being Canadian, I have a rudimentary grasp of the language, and I could have done a lot better.

Though I can't pretend to have an in depth knowledge of the Walloons versus the Flemmish issue, I have a sense of it. We have our own version in Canada, and it comes up in conversation from time to time. I used to live in Montreal where  you hear something called  franglais which is a similar hybrid as the  French/Flemmish blend you hear in Brussels. Sorry, but I can remember what you call it.

One of the other things I recall is the dog sh-t all over the place in both the Netherlands and Belgium. What I really laughed at was the tiles on the streets with a picture of a dog squatting. In those days I had hair down to my waist. I was walking past a group of little kids, and the sweetest little girl gushed incredulously, "Quel grosse plume!". My hair is much shorter now, but sometimes one of my friends will still say that to me.

I could go on reminiscing, but just one more. At that time, hardcore techno and gabba was ruling the dance floors, and most of it was coming from Rotterdam and Belgium. I was in a small town in the North, maybe Bruges, and school had just let out. There was a cafe on the edge of the town square blasting while a hundred kids were screaming across the square toward it. Very cool.

Any way, I know a little bit about Belgium...

Are you trying to make me cry? I tried so many beers... I love Chimay. And Kriek. And Hoegaarden, on a hot summer day. And Gueuze Bellevue. And Gueuze Lambic. And and and ...

Waaaa!

Yeah right on! I'm a cyclist, so I should have thought of that. The Belgians are especially known for their ability on the cobblestones and basically own the Paris-Roubaix.

Fries and mayo.

Chloelicious -> RE: what do you know about Belgium? (2/21/2008 8:32:29 AM)

No that s not my purpose.

have you tried Pecheresse, fruit defendu or westmalle?

We are also known for our lace (more in Brugges)

Hoegaarden is outstanding. I have to admit that I have only been to the Bruxelles airport and driven through Belgium once on our way from Den Hague to Alsace.

I have a thing for Bavarian Hefe-Weisse, though. Sipping one of those and munching a soft pretzel whilst people-watching on Kaufinger-Straße in Munich is my idea of a great way to waste some time.

badprofessor -> RE: what do you know about Belgium? (2/21/2008 8:35:39 AM)

Saison Dupont, Cantillon, and all the Scotch ales they brew for the Belgian market...

But did Eric Idle win a Rory for best use of the word Belgium in a serious screenplay?

I used to live in the Netherlands.  I think Belgium is a lovely country.

I dont really have much of an opinion about whether the Flemish or the Walloons should have won the war, but I would exhort both sides to bury their dead and try to bring peace from the tragedy of war.

Enough people have died.
