say like getting better court policies against domestic abusers getting  custody rights to the kids, or better awareness of those issues.

well yes, but you can do things with out tons of money. money helps, but having money is not the only way to help causes.

'Lobbyist' usually equates to money, which buys access to legislators. If not money, then votes, such as representing a group of like minded people.

Grass roots activism usually starts with some like minded people joining other small groups with similar  goals to get attenion from the media, which will convince legislators that there are votes to be had on the issue.

Have you checked with other activist groups in your area or on the internet? There is usally one person or group who serves as a hub.

Paint a sign and walk around somewhere.  That's what protesting amounts to.

I am not sure if I'd call for the better awareness surrounding cirrtain issues protesting, but, a sign or a shirt sure would get your message seen lol.

call your local court system and ask if they know of any organizations that deal with children's issues.  they may be able to direct you to the legit parties in question rather than hooking up with someone who turns out to be a bit of a nut.  a call to social service agencies listed in the phone book might help, they may have connections who need help.  check the local newspapers, look for meeting notices.  domestic violence group referrals might be easiest to get from someplace like your local rape crisis center or battered women's shelter.  make some phone calls and if that agency can't help, ask if they know who might.  it's worth investigating.

greetings yourhandmyass,

check out your local college campus. usually there are some legit groups who either have student groups there or hand out flyers or something like that, and they can hook you up with other groups dealing with similar issues in your town. as pm mentioned, rape crisis centers, shelters, and victim advocacy organizations will be able to tell you the best way to help with issues related to rape and domestic violence.

http://www.congress.org is a good site to learn about your representatives, issues, groups, etc. in case you (like me) tend to be a bit, er, special when it comes to politics. but in terms of hands-on activism, definitely look into local shelters and crisis centers.

respectfully,
annabelle.

When I was pursuing my undergraduate degree I was asked to go to our state capital as a student lobbyist to ask for more money for CSU campuses because my professors knew of my love for politics and my knowledge of it.

If I wanted to become a lobbyist for a certain cause I would join a group that was well established, volunteer my time with the group and then let them know of your interest in doing that work. Many lobbyists for causes such as advocating for women and children do not get paid for that work. It is more of a charitable endeavor because these associations just do not have a lot of money to throw around.

I was unable to do the lobbyist thing because I did not want to leave my UM at the time and travel that far from home for extended periods of time. It just wasn't feasible for me.
