Mulling things over, as I am wont to do, I came to an epiphany.
The reason being straight forward doesn't work, is because in all the romantic comedies, the guy who seems the most obvious choice never works out.
It's always the guy who seems like a complete jerk until the moment of truth when his heart of gold shines forth and the girl switches from the first guy to jerk guy.
Damn that Hollywood-patented oh so predictable 'plot twist'.
