I agree with Cali.  Loyalty for me is not a conscious decision.   It is something that I give withour realizing.    It is something that happens when you feel that connection, that something in your soul,  whether it be friendly, platonic, sexual, or otherwise.

Loyalty and love both sneak up on you in the same way, at least in my experience. I think the more relationships you've had go paws up, the more wary you are of giving loyalty or love consciously. That's why they both wind their tendrils insidiously into your brain and heart until you have finally that "Uh-Oh" moment!

Now Les, you march your little self right OUT of my brain.  There really is NOT enough room for one more person in there.

Just a thought I wanted to toss in:  One of the hard lessons of life I've learned first-hand is that misplaced loyalty is one of the most tragic things.  I spent nearly 12 years displaying utter loyalty and devotion to someone who valued it virtually not at all.  Lots of lost years I'd love to have back to devote to the One who deserves that type of loyalty.  Not possible of course, so I'll just have to be doubly loyal to make up for all that lost time wasted on another...............luci

Misplaced loyalty is a sad state to be in.  A waste of everyone's time.  The worst thing is that when you realize that the loyalty has been misplaced, and you take it away, you are the asshole.  They never saw it coming because you gave it to them for no particular reason all along!

I have learned what qualities a relationship that deserves your loyalty possesses.  It is a relationship in which you are free to grow, and your partner is as well.  It is when you respect their every word and secret thought, whether you agree with it or not.  When you accept each other fully..then loyalty has a place. (IMO)  :P

It depends on what you mean by loyal.  In this case, I'm going to define loyalty as being a steadfast ally to a healthy adult.  That does not happen for me without understanding the person for whom I am being a steadfast ally.  I can't see how that understanding could come about without discussion.

You could be using the word "loyalty" as a stand-in for sexual fidelity, which is a different matter.

I take it that you are talking about sexual loyalty?  Because I'm loyal to alot of people.  I'm loyal to my employer, to my friends, to people who think they are my friends.  OK-- I had to look it up just to make sure I had a handle on the word.

loy·al·ty      /ˈlɔɪəlti/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[loi-uhl-tee] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun, plural -ties.

1.
the state or quality of being loyal; faithfulness to commitments or obligations.

2.
faithful adherence to a sovereign, government, leader, cause, etc.

3.
an example or instance of faithfulness, adherence, or the like: a man with fierce loyalties.

[Origin: 1350–1400; ME loialte < MF. See loyal, -ty4647]
—Synonyms 2. fealty, devotion, constancy. Loyalty, allegiance, fidelity all imply a sense of duty or of devoted attachment to something or someone. Loyalty connotes sentiment and the feeling of devotion that one holds for one's country, creed, family, friends, etc. Allegiance applies particularly to a citizen's duty to his or her country, or, by extension, one's obligation to support a party, cause, leader, etc. Fidelity implies unwavering devotion and allegiance to a person, principle, etc.—Antonyms 1, 2. faithlessness OK-- so I give my loyalty freely without conditions of repriciocity.  And I give it without talking about it.  I do it because I want to not because I'm expected or asked to.
