everyone who drives has to buy car insurance - what's the main reason you choose one company to buy your insurance from, over another?

this isnt idle curiosity by the way, and its not really to do with car insurance!

I'm afraid mine's covered by my family, so I'm not in a position where I can speak for myself.

As for my family, I think they go for the extra's (money's not an obstacle for many of them).  I think good customer service is a close second concern.  While they still try to be frugile, they don't seem to be opposed to spending a little extra if they think it'll save the stress and damages in the near-worst case scenerios.


PS- If I had to buy some right now and work it off with my current income, I'd be going for the lowest cost (or perhaps if it's not legally required), and just try to drive safely.  I suppose it's worth noting I do very little driving and I don't feel I would seriously suffer from lack of a vechile should I suddenly lose it.

I'm only concerned with cost.

However, I should add that I drive an older vehicle and my insurance is liability only---so I'm only interested in carrying what the state requires.

Lowest cost and customer service. I've since found another company that's about $10 a month cheaper, and I'm debating a switch.

I have been using the same car insurance since I was 16.  I have USAA, and I only get that because of my father.  It's a insurance company that only gives insurance to military officers, NCO's, and their former dependents.  Well my dad is a retired Colonel, so I have been with USAA ever since.  It's great insurance; and as long as I don't do anything stupid to get dropped, I can stay with them.  I pay less than $500 a year for my car insurance.  It's liability with uninsured motorist, and theft coverage.

Cost and service. And I am fortunate I found both in the same place. It would take a substantial decrease in premium to make me switch carriers at this point.

for some reason i've always believed that one can never be over insured...i have insurance for everything.  i go with the best coverage and best perks even if it is a little more expensive.

You can go witht he lowest price, but you still have to ask if you are actually indemnified or not. Many low cost policies will end up being a pain in the ass because they put you through the wringer in order to get your settlement. My criteria are: 1) how solid is the company? 2) can I choose to have a slightly higher deductable, and thus get lower rates? 3) Do they have a multi-car discount.

Just so you know, the two that I've been pretty happy with in the last 20 years is Farmers Insurance Group, and AAA... AAA is the best so far, IMHO, because they throw in a membership, and thus breakdown coverage, hotel discounts, and lots of other perks for vitually nothing. Nothing to sneeze at, when a single tow can end up costing you over $300 otherwise.

I'm sticking with State Farm, I've had quotes from Progressive, Esurance & discounted Met Life auto, and none of them could beat SF's rates for me.

A local agent told me they dont write the state min- i asked why. she said the min is too little. i was just  complaining about this this am.  the old place put me thru red tape... most people trade a car in- and chcnge the policy. i however obtsain the next car, then drop the prior car. thus having 2 cars titled  to me.   so i went thru a run-around once i had to prove i did  not drive the old car. they  said people drop a car and still drive it making the agent liable.   well 4 yrs later same mess. by that time the internet was in swing-i found aplaceout of area. now mind you i try to keep my money local- so this was against my mode.  the agent owner  called me after i left- to ask why..itold him.

now i learnjust last week- i CAN in fact buy the state min!!    that sure would have helped  to do for the past when it was hard to make rent!

PA -makes so when you take a car off the road- you must send back the tag.  if the ins inst paid a policeman will come to your house and take the tag.   also  all licinse plates  in PA junk yards are removed.   and a $50 fee is tied to the driver license if you  keep a tag not registerred. 

titling is -- welll difficult.  you cant just buy a car and sit on the title for 6 mos like you can in IL.   both parties must show up at a state approved "transfer"-  it can not be a bill of sale.   years ago when money was very scarce- i could not afford to title  the car. so i did not. well-  a man at my job reported me cos he thought i was after his lady.  something about my thick hair. when the cop ticketed me he told me he could sieze my car.  soi had to get title.    the seller was no where to be found. so i thank  AW on her award winning actress perfomace  lol.

anyhow    allstate and state farm  i dont care for.  one can check  out these no-name cos, some  are pretty  good.

i view ins as a tax. it is required to drive.   being that- why do i need un-insured??   when that is illegal.

also PA has the oddest laws....   when in a accident what would be the otehr guys fault in IL is my fault in PA.

i feel ins is gambling.  dont even get me started on this topic.  when your car is car jacked in Chicago--- your fucked.  bigtime.

The big companies have been caught doing that as well.
They go through periods called 'buying business' where they lower their rates to increase their pool of customers, and then when the claims start pouring in, they delay payouts, raise rates, cancel, and so forth.

I've got USAA../. you could not PAY me to go somewhere else.

USAA is a private insurance co.

If you are American military (active/reserve/retired) or dependent (and that is NOT age restricted).... they ROCK!!

If I'm not mistaken, it isnt even generationally restricted.

I totalled my last car (my fault) and I am still paying less than 600.00 p/yr.. for FULL coverage.  I got my settlement check on my totalled car in less than 2 weeks.

You can very easily be over-insured. For example, a $100 deductible on collision coverage will push your premiums higher than the monetary benefit you are likely to obtain in the event you have an accident.

Collision insurance of any kind on an older vehicle is questionable because the blue book value drops to the point where the insurance company will most likely total out the vehicle in the event of an accident--put the money towards CDs to save up the down payment for a new car (that way you get the interest instead of the insurance company).
