I've got USAA../. you could not PAY me to go somewhere else.

USAA is a private insurance co.

If you are American military (active/reserve/retired) or dependent (and that is NOT age restricted).... they ROCK!!

If I'm not mistaken, it isnt even generationally restricted.

I totalled my last car (my fault) and I am still paying less than 600.00 p/yr.. for FULL coverage.  I got my settlement check on my totalled car in less than 2 weeks.

USAA is not generation restricted.  I have it too Greedy.  I have never been in the military, but my dad was an officer.  So I have had it since I was 16.  From what I understand, my UM's (if I ever have any) can have it too.  I pay less than $500 a year for liability and uninsured motorist coverage.  You just have to make sure you don't get kicked off because of excessive traffic violations.  I wouldn't go anwhere else either.

I have the best combo of price, coverage, and reliability.  If I ever needed them in the past, I've received the help I needed with no questions asked.  The price is a bit higher than some, but the reliability that I have with them is worth the extra cost.

Thanks everyone - this has been very useful indeed.

What its really about is why people buy things that they have to buy which are legally standardised (ie not much room for differentiation) - in my case, international transport service. That almost 60% make their decision based on lowest cost when buying car insurance is very instructive in relation to my sector too I feel.

This means that to win business we have to be able to offer the lowest cost, and our other selling points like the extras we offer and our customer service, are far less relevant. To be fair, this is more or less what was expected, but the high scores for "lowest cost" are a little higher than I expected. It would seem that to be successful, we must offer lowest cost and use our extras as tipping factors in our favour.

Thanks again

E

We have full coverage including extras ( underinsured/uninsured, roadside assistance etc) I also have the bumped up coverage because if you look at liability only and state minimums.. in ohio its around 7,500 in coverage, you whack a decent car or truck insurance isnt going to do you a lot of good at that point and you'll be paying it off forever, not my idea of a good time. So while yes its expensive I know if I get in an accident everything is covered and well covered at that.

Lowest cost.  I was with StateFarm for 26 years had 1 minor. forgiven, accident then in 3 months 1 $37k accident and they raised my premium to $800 a month

everyone who drives has to buy car insurance - what's the main reason you choose one company to buy your insurance from, over another?

this isnt idle curiosity by the way, and its not really to do with car insurance!

thanks in advance for the replies / votes; it might just save my bacon!

E

I go for lowest cost because I believe that ALL insurance corporations are foul and evil.  Why should I pay more for the same involuntary rape I'd get from a cheaper company?

Especially in states where the DMV is COMPLETELY in bed with insurance companies like New York.(*)
Same car,  same coverage,  same driving record ... My insurance costs 1/4th here in Michigan as what I paid in New York state.

(*) The NYS DMV is one of the BIG reasons why I'd be hesitant to ever move back to New York.
I am so surprised there isn't a violent uprising everytime they come out with some new draconian fine.  But the New York sheeple just baw and bleat and go on paying.

Military discount and affiliated bank discount, but price does play into that as well.

At the time I went looking, State Farm had the highest rating in terms of paying out and not disallowing. If I'm going to pay those monthly premiums, I don't want it to be to a company who weasels out of paying for repairs.
